  1. Hi everyone!

Let me start by saying that I had the Gastric Sleeve done a little over two weeks ago. I've been cleared for soft foods, and I've found that I have a great deal of restriction in my sleeve.

It's always been a dream of mine to thru-hike the Pacific Crest Trail or Appalachian Trail. I hike on a regular basis already, but I'm wondering if a thru-hike will be possible with my new anatomy? Some problems that I am foreseeing is that I would have to eat a ton of calories every day since I would be hiking pretty much all day for 5 months straight. Like I said, I have a pretty good amount of restriction with my sleeve now, so I imagine this part may be a little difficult. One recommendation I have seen online to get in extra calories on the trail is to add olive oil on everything. Another problem I may have is drinking a decent amount of Water. Since I have to wait thirty minutes now between drinking and eating, I think this may cause a problem as well. Basically, I just wanna know if doing a thru-hike of either trail I mentioned is feasible with my sleeve? I won't be doing a thru-hike this year, but maybe next year? Of course, I will discuss this question with my doctor as well, but I thought I would get advice here as well.

    Thank you

  2. So my surgery went very well they said! I was a little worried this morning, because my surgeon was around an hour late. I was so worried that my surgery was going to be postponed til a later date, but he showed up. My stomach is a little sore right now, but I’ve been getting great rest since the surgery, so hopefully that will speed up my recovery. And to everyone still waiting for their surgery date, I wish you the best of luck and the day will be here before you know it!

  3. Thanks a lot guys! All of the replies were very nice and helpful. As far as the Calcium goes, I found out that there are Patches that I can get that I just put on the skin for calcium. And for the Synthroid, someone told me they had the same concern and that they were still able to get the DS. So hopefully this is helpful for anyone else who may have the same question in the future.

  4. Hi,

This is my first post. I have been considering getting the Duodenal Switch for a few years now, and I finally took the first step and attended a webinar, and scheduled an appointment with a surgeon. I had a few questions that I wanted answered though: Does anyone know if the Duodenal Switch will interfere with my Synthroid and Calcium absorption? I already have to take Calcium supplements (2000 mg/day), and I know that you have to take calcium supplements after duodenal switch surgery for life, but since I already take it will that mean that I have to take an even higher dose, or will I not be able to get a malabsorptive procedure?

    Thank You
