  1. You know, I never even considered Keto flu!!! You may have hit the nail on the head there. I did LCHF for about 8 months a couple years ago (and dropped 45 lbs), and was in ketosis but never had keto flu because I was taking magnesium.

I did call the doctor who checks all the meds before surgery, and he said I could take Celebrex, but would still have to stop before surgery. He suggested opioids, but I don't want those. I'll just deal for now.

Thanks for your response as well, Suzy. I definitely don't have a fever, just generally achy and whiny. Lol

@drizz75 What revision are you going to have that will help this?

((hugs)) and prayers to both of you!!! So scary Larry!

I'm not sure what it's called, but my surgeon has been doing a lot of research on it and said he "is probably the only surgeon performing it." I dunno. I had a gastric emptying study, and food is stalling in the small intestine for a very long time, activating hormones. From what I understand, it's almost like you're keeping your body in starvation mode so it tries to hold onto every calorie.

My surgeon is going to shorten my small intestine, which they now know should have been done with my initial surgery, but had no idea about it 15 years ago. :-)

  3. I'm on day 4 of my 10 day liver reduction diet and have had a bit if food each day. Usually more veg, some lean protien, or cottage cheese. Mine is very strict (3-4 Protein Shakes and 1/2 c. Non-starchy veg each day), and I'm confused why I'm even on it, as I am getting a revision that is altering my intestine where the large and small connect, at the opposite end from where the pouch and liver are.

I'm going to call the dietician tomorrow to ask about it. All the liquid is killing me, and I'm a teacher and can't just go to the bathroom whenever I want. :-(

(Also, this diet is making me whiny. Please excuse my mope.)

  4. I'm assuming that's what I have. I had a gastric emptying study that showed that my food is sitting in my small intestine for a very long time, so I am having a revision on November 20th. Definitely wish they had found it before I had to live with it for 15 years, but glad to filly get it taken care of. Good luck to you! !

It couldn't hurt to consult your original surgeon and see. It depends on BMI and co-morbidity especially like the initial surgery.

  6. Hi there! I'm a special Education teacher and have a daughter with High Functioning Autism. Do headphones work for you? (with or without music) If I was trying to avoid someone from being overstimulated, I would try that first.

Congratulations on moving forward with your surgery even though you are uncomfortable. It's really tough when you are at odds with your brain! I wish you the best of luck!

  7. About 4 years after my gastric bypass I started having horrible stabbing pains. I went to the ER several times, and they were convinced I had an ulcer. Finally went to the ER in the hospital I had my bypass in. The nurse took one look at me, and said I was being admitted. I had a common bile duct stone that was leftover after my bypass/gall bladder removal, and it had moved and was blocking 3/5 of my liver functioning...and I had developed jaundice.

I've also developed kidney stones since my bypass, which has been fun. :)

Good luck. Hope you are out of pain soon!

  8. That was fast! I was approved on the first try through BCBS. Revison date scheduled with Dr. Caruana (Buffalo, NY) for November 20th.

Original surgery was open RNY Gastric Bypass, and now I believe he is performing a revision to the distal small bowel bypass by shortening the common channel to add some malabsorbtion into the game. They did not do this when I had my surgery 15 years ago, and a lot of research has been done since with the hormones centered in this length of bowel and weight loss. I'll clarify and will edit this if needed.

They offered me October 23rd, but I needed to give my work time to find a sub and to get off of hormonal birth control.

Bought a couple tubs of Bariatric Fusion Protein Powder today, making Bone Broth and generally getting mentally prepared for the prospect of 10 days of the liver reduction diet and being on Clear Liquids for Thanksgiving. (No turkey smoothies. lol)

Super excited, as I've been trying to get a revision for about 7 years.

  9. The road to revision is littered with minor annoyances.

My GP is a diet doctor that I made my GP so I could just pay my insurance co-pay for visits, but I gave up on prescription pills because nothing worked. My surgeon gave me a quick form for him to fill out, and first totally refused to fill out, then said he would take it and do it later. His office then mailed it to me instead of faxing it to the surgeon's office as directed, and he listed my BMI as 39.9. Did he just totally derail me for insurance coverage?

I just input my info, and my BMI is coming out as 42. I'm so irritated right now!

  10. Hi all!

New here. I've been seeking a revision for 7 years and finally got some good news. My original surgeon is back to doing revisions and has approved me for surgery. Just waiting on insurance approval and hoping it's soon. :)

My original surgery was in 2002 with Dr. Caruana. I was 371 lbs. when I started, 352 when I went in for surgery--open Gastric Bypass with gallbladder removal. Old school style!

I dropped 130 lbs. within 8 months and have lost and gained that last 30 over and over again for 15 years. I've been one of the lucky ones who maintained the majority of my weight loss.

About 7 years ago I looked into revision options, because if I had walked in off the street I would have qualified for a first surgery. I have never gotten lower than the obese range. Dr. Caruana denied me at this point, calling me a "success case," I then consulted with his ex-partner, who saw me for 6 months THEN denied me. He suggested I try the Cleveland Clinic. I consulted with the CC, had a scope shoved down my throat, met the dietitian, etc..and racked up $1500 in bills when my insurance denied me coverage. :) A few years later, and here I am...I happened upon my original surgeon's page, and there it was-- REVISIONS. I called and made an appointment.

So far I've had extensive blood work completed, a 6-hour Gastric Emptying study, met with Dr. Caruana, the LPN, Dietitian, and the Behaviorist. I have reflux into the old stomach, and I'm good on all the minute Vitamins and minerals, and B's are through the roof, but I'm severely anemic, and my D is low.

The revision I was offered will leave the pouch and the reflux alone, and will resect the small intestine near the large intestine and will remove a lenght of it. The idea is to control the hormones in that area and even out the absorbtion levels/add a level of malabsorbtion that is missing from the original surgery. Dr. Caruana said he thinks he's the one surgeon anywhere who is doing this type of surgery and is focusing on hormonal responses.

Hoping for the best at this point. Anyone else going through this stuff? :)
