In the beginning, the health psychologist at my bariatric clinic asked me what my goal was, and I said I'd be elated to weigh 200 lbs again. He told me that was a pretty realistic goal. Once I got to about 220, I told the dietitian I was going to shoot for 170-180, and she said that seemed reasonable. Once I got down there, I told the dietitian I was now going to try for 150. She told me people have done it, but it wasn't very realistic - that most people who start out SMO end up "overweight" or "class I obese". That's all the incentive I needed - I was determined to make it to normal BMI - and I have.

SOOOO - to answer your question, my goal was revised a few times as I lost weight. I'd start with something pretty realistic and go from there.

    what does SMO mean?

17 months out and 93 lbs down as of 10 months out. Maintained within 5 lbs since then. Don't measure, weigh or count anything. I do low carb, focus on Protein and do Nothing low fat. But I do lots of healthy fats. I see my nut every few weeks. She specializes in bariatric and I think that makes a difference. Love the way I eat and the foods I eat and I think that makes all the difference. I agree that most store bought mayo has junk in it. Take a look at Primal Kitchen mayo. A bit pricey, but we're worth it. They have a chipotle lime flavor also, which I put in my chicken salad and am eating now. Hope that helps. Good fats are healthy.

I'm so glad this thread has started as all the "official" bariatric advice seems to be low cal, zero fat etc., and so much has changed in nutrition since the day of the fat free "calorie" obsessed diets. I do recognise that my way of eating wasn't healthy before, for me it was all obsessively healthy OR "off the wagon" days eating industrial amounts of sugar. For me, I'm going to give up sugar entirely now that I've had this done. But healthy fats are essential. Luckily I consult my own nutritionist that I trust otherwise I would have been lost. I'm going to check out Primal Kitchen mayo top tip thanks - looks like I can get it here in the UK.

  3. p.s Bone Broth / stock is absolutely fantastic for collagen which we need for healing post surgery. i took advice from a nutritionist before I went into this and her recommendations have been fantastic. she told me about a broth here in the UK from Osius which is made from all of the chicken including feet and is therefore collagen to the max. i don't know if there is an equivalent in the States but that got me through Phase 1. it was delicious! you could literally serve it at a dinner party.

Cannot recommend this highly enough. I always set it for 6 hours no matter the size of chicken. You can tone down the spice rub if you want, but it's actually very slight. I don't bother grilling it at the end to crisp the skin. (Right now we're not going to be using the skin anyway). I make it regularly and added the broth and veg and chicken to a small bowl of brown rice or similar. But made it today on Day 3 of Purees, pulled a tiny bit of chicken (it's so soft and tearable done this way), one chunk of carrot and the juices and pureed them and it was the first time I actually wanted more of anything since my op. Whoever made this recipe up is a genuis. At the moment I'm not eating the other veg - onion & celery - as I don't want to take chances. Of course once you have picked the chicken you can chuck the bones back in and get a superb stock. And THIS is my fave recipe for that http://www.theyummylife.com/Slow_Cooker_Chicken_Broth

My Mum had Gastric Bypass almost a year ago and when I made the Chicken in Slow Cooker for her she got so much wellness out of it. Good luck!! I wonder what other peoples faves are.

  5. Sleeved on 12th and feeling very back to normal now but somehow better I'm so proud that I've done this for myself and now can drive again and walk the dogs again and have such clarity about how my life should be instead of constantly being solid citizen, want more trips away, more nights out, and making life work for me not just my teen and ex-husband.

  6. I am going to be very open in the hope that it helps others. My surgeon had operated on THREE people I knew with great results. And if I hadn't observed them I might never have researched it. I hate when people say "you didn't need to do that" and I tell them that once you have gone over a certain BMI you only have a 1 or 2 % chance of losing the weight and keeping it off. It's very new science and I'm delighted to talk about it.

  7. I ended up staying 3 nights as I had such reaction to the morphine 24 hours after the op. So they switched me to paracetamol which I can handle no nausea etc., and I got out after 3 nights. HOWEVER it was so nice at home in comparison....I was pretty desperate to go home. And as I was self-funding, I paid an extra £1025 for the 3rd night dammit! This stay was unusual, 1 really should be fine.

  8. I'm loving 1 scrambled egg with a tiny pat of butter, cotttage cheese, really good chicken broth for collagen, Protein Shake made with great quality whey Protein and coconut Water. Hummus didn't go down well for me. The BEST has been a slow cooked chicken puréed with a chunk of carrot and the juices - absolute heaven. If you have a slow cooker I can give you the recipe.

  9. Hi there, feeling FANTASTIC after 12th sept sleeve. I have particular Vitamins that I want to take which are powder in capsule, any tips how to take them? I mixed them in cottage cheese one day, wasn't particularly nice. Any tips on how to down them? Maybe just add to my daily Protein smoothie? I love pulse-in whey mixed with a raw coconut milk from "rebel kitchen" here in the UK. All advice welcome.

  10. I'm one week out and starting puréed food tomorrow can't wait. My mind has craved a thick bread cheese sandwich even though I don't think I EVER ate that. Gas has been painful so I've learned to stay ahead of that with pain meds. Only started to stop regretting half way through the last week. Worry about work a lot as my mental acuity / application isn't there, as someone else has shared. Have been so encouraged by assistance I've had from surprising quarters. Wish my daughter could have been kinder / more thoughtful but she's 13 it goes with the territory.

  11. So everything going well after my surgery, I'm one week out have my checkup tomorrow. Learned that I "don't do well" on opiates so the pain relief was the worst aspect of the experience, but I was switched to paracetamol and haven't needed to take any anyway since I got home. But the pain between neck and shoulder is really painful and although I've read a bit about it on other forums I just had to put the question out there. What is up with this pain?? Is it referred pain or to do with bedrest or to do with intubation during surgery. I've applied heat to it but it just seems to get worse and worse. I'm about to down two paracetamol. Would love to hear what others know / have experienced. Ow!!

  12. @ALotLessMe i'm having sleeve on 12th in London. my mum had bypass last November and is doing great although has rather a cavalier attitude to sticking to the rules and regulations (she's 75 maybe that's part of why). i'm looking forward to it all, worried about mixing work with recovery as i'm not going to take much time off - i have my own business. but it is relatively quiet at the moment so should be okay.
