  1. Thank you so much! I really appreciate you taking the time to answer in depth all the answers to my questions!! I am ready to pick up the phone for that consult but so hesitant! I have 70 lbs to loose, so the dr would probably tell me that I can expect to loose 35 in the first year and then the procedure becomes slightly less effective for the 2nd half of the weight loss? I guess that is my hangup over just having the regular sleeve since that is more permanent and would be the same out of pocket cost for me since I am self pay. You are really awesome for taking the time to help! I do have one additional question (sorry) regarding your current situation with food. You didn't mention if you have kids but I have 3 kids in the house that I would like to try and keep this from if I can. But we go out to eat often (sports and running around), I would not be home for most nights during dinner because of being right at the beginning of the cross country sport season (which ends up being a lot of walking for me) and trying to explain my non eating at Thanksgiving would be a huge give away to extended family. Are you just homebound at this point until you are done with the puree phase or would you be able to fake your way through a meal at a restaurant?

    Hi BigSuzy1969,

Just to answer a couple of questions. I have about the same amount of weight to lose and have lost 22lbs so far (3.5 weeks since procedure). I hope to lose majority of the weight in 6-12 months. My surgeon expects I can lose most of my excess weight within the year, a total of 20-25% of my total body weight which his patients typically do. This is about 55lbs for me.

I Have 3 kids who don't know that I have had the procedure - they haven't even noticed that I am not eating the same meals which is amazing as they are all teenagers. I just keep busy while they eat and talk to them at the dinner table while I clean up the kitchen and sit down with a bowl of Soup and say I am eating extra healthy. The way I have faked a restaurant meal is to order soup and now that I am up to purée- soft food, order a small Pasta and slowly eat a few mouthfuls and tell the family it's delicious and that they have to try some. The dish is then at least half gone and I take the rest home and my husband takes it for lunch the next day. Remember - the liquid diet does end so before long and you can order a small proper meal. My plan moving forward is to order a small Protein meal or a share plate with the hubs and just eat what I can.

In short - it's all doable. I self funded too - it's a lot of money so you have to be confident in your decision.

Feel free to ask any questions you have.

    Mel

  2. So I'm a few days into the puréed stage and noticed I have to be very conscious of eating slow and taking time between bites. I wasn't feeling the restriction as I thought I would and may have over eaten once or twice and then you feel that pressure, haha. I'm measuring my food to make sure I stay unde a cup in volume to avoid it and it seems to work well for me. I still haven't felt hungry. It's kind of weird because I can remember every decision about food being based on quantity, pre-procedure. Hopefully this is the start of a new life where I eat what my body needs and not what my mind believes. Good luck to everyone.

JimL - the second last sentence of this post is exactly what I needed to read. Thank you so much, I really needed to read that.
I have started eating a few "slider foods" in between my meals and can see that they go down easily. I was feeling really disappointed with myself but now realise that this procedure requires a big mental shift to make it work, no point being weighed down with self pity - I need to go for a big walk and start today with a fresh perspective. It's not going to work without me making the change to choose healthy food. I'm down 22 lbs and am looking forward to moving out of the purée stage and filling up on Protein and veg. Thanks again for posting - it's the little bit of inspiration I needed. Mel.

    ooooooops
just realized you were asking about the ESG
don't know if restriction and things are the
    same with sleeve. sorry bud:wacko:
    kathy

Not at all Kathy - sleeve patients seem to have the most similar experience to esg pts from what I see so the advice is very welcome

  4. Yea, Belle, you did it! Glad to hear that your procedure was successful. You seem to have been out for a long time following your procedure. I wonder if others were out for 5-6 hours post-procedure. Do you think that the difficulty you experienced the first couple of days was related to the anesthesia? Was your throat sore afterwards?

    Hi SammyKay,
I would have got out about 5 hrs after procedure too and think I was fairly slow to get nausea and pain under control. If you are feeling well I'm sure they would discharge you sooner. The nausea is pretty extreme first up, I imagine it is caused by a number of factors. It really does settle quickly though so just prepare for a few off days and you will be back up and going in no time.

  5. What I notice is that the "restriction" is delayed more for me in the puréed phase. I noticed that if I don't take enough time between bites and eat slow, I can get uncomfortable 20-30 minutes later. Happened to me twice and I finally figured out what was going on. I'm about 5 days into the puréed stage.

Thanks JimL. We are at about the same stage post procedure by the sounds of things.

you are asking me a question that happened almost 6 years ago!!??? LOL
i'm lucky to remember something that happened almost 6 minutes ago:lol:
i was eating solids at around 5-6 weeks PO. it's a great idea keeping a log/record
book. daily basis, write things down related to your WLS. ie problems, successes -
and in betweens. very helpful. Then, 6 years from now when a cutie petuti newbie
asks you a question, just go back to your log. Or of course, just ask me LOL
    keep up the good job
    good luck bud
    kathy

Wow, six years ago! Has the esg been successful long term for you?

  7. [mention=324596]Melesg[/mention]
liquids, go smoothly down the hatch. they will not give
you any restriction - doc never put me on puree' - (my request)
    not sure about puree/and restriction:wacko:
when you start gradually eating solids - you should/will
    feel that restriction we love
    congrats on your early success
    continued good luck
    kathy

Hi Kathy, how many weeks out did you start eating? Thanks so much, Mel

  8. Wondering if any esg patients can tell me what restriction should feel like when starting purée diet? I had a weetbix and milk and later a scrambled egg today be really didn't feel restricted or "full" at any time? Is this normal? I have been compliant with fluids only for 2.5 weeks with no vomiting so assume I have not stretched anything. Any advice would be greatly appreciated 😬

  9. Thank you so much for the update! Wow an IV Clinic sounds like a godsend- I'm sure I won't have that option - surgeon is 6 hours away. I know so many medical professionals- I'm just going to have to really be incredibly diligent about Water intake. How much have you lost so far and are you feeling any fatigue? Thanks for advise of 2-3 days support - doing procedure on Thursday have to be back at it by Monday. Fingers crossed it's enough time.

I needed to travel to another state to have the procedure but can honestly say by day 4 I was feeling heaps better and by day 5 back to normal and needing no meds. I lost 4.3 kg in a week so 7.1 kg down in 3 weeks. It's taken me 8 days for the fatigue to have subsided completely but it wasn't terrible. I honestly feel normal now - just hungry normal lol. I felt pretty down as eating has always been so enjoyable and to not be eating for a month sounds like torture. But my mindset today is heaps better and I am really not hungry and happy to start exercising. Just make the most of those 4 days to take all the meds you need and rest up, how old are your little ones? I think if you can plan to ease the load as much as possible in the first week then you will be completely back by week 2. Good luck, I can't wait to hear how you go.

  10. Another question: are green juices and smoothies allowed after the procedure?

My doctor has you nil orally for the first two days to reduce pain and nausea and let the sutures heal. So it would be impossible not to get dehydrated without the fluids, other drs may do it differently. First six months is when most of the wt should move however I'm told you lose for about 18 months. If a smoothie can fit through a strainer then it's ok.

  11. How are you today Melesg? 14 days until my procedure [emoji30][emoji15][emoji4]

Much better thanks Belle. My dr has an Iv clinic where you can go in each day and get what ever Iv fluids and meds you need and it's made a big difference. Saw the dr who is happy so I'm officially off and running. One more day of clear fluids then onto full fluids. The nausea is gone, just some cramps and feeling of indigestion at times. I now have to weigh in everyday (and the wt is sent electronically to the clinic to review constantly) from this point on. I'm told that my stomach for now can take a cup of thin fluids, or 1/2 cup thick fluids and then 1/3 cup solid food initially. Good luck for your procedure date. I would definitely recommend having 3 days after the procedure to really take it easy. If you can get help with the kids during this time, then it will help your recovery. Apparently 2-3 days is typical before you feel well again. Symptoms are really not pleasant at first but settle pretty quickly. Definitely ask for ALL the antinausea drugs - and know that you will be back to yourself in no time. Your going to do great - I'm really excited for you xo

  12. I had the procedure on the 15/08/17.
    The bad news
They said there would be some mild nausea and it would settle about 8 hours after the surgery. Well it didn't. It lasted 10 days. I lived on the vomit wafers. The pain from the gas also killed for 2 weeks Constipation is also difficult I'm used to being daily now it's at worst weekly at best every few days
    Good news is ;
no pre op diet , BMI started at 33 I'm 167cm / 5ft 6. I started at 93.7kg. In first 2 weeks lost 7kg. Been at a stall for the last 2 weeks. With a fluctuating gain of around 500g up and down. Restriction is real. I've just moved onto soft foods so feeling a bit better.
Exercise (weights) restriction until end of week 6. So 2 more weeks to go.
Struggling to drink my 1.5-2l a day. Can't do Protein Shakes of any type. Trying to reach 50-70g of Protein per day. Some days is a struggle.
    My diet looked like this.
    No pre opt.
Day 1-14 fluids only that can pass through a thin straw.
Day 15-28 purée fluids that can pass through a thick straw.
    Day 29 -42 soft foods / mash.
Day 43-56 start moving to a normal diet.
Just now I'm day 29 and my diet looks like this.
    Breakfast - 1 egg scrambled,
    morning tea - cheese stick.
lunch slow cooked roast pork 100g and tablespoon apple sauce,
    afternoon tea yopro yogurt,
    dinner fish, with garlic butter.
Dessert custard or chocolate milk or a banana paddlepop(125ml)
around 60g protein and about 800-900 cal
im trying to walk about 30 min at least 3 times a week will be hoping it to more when I can eat real food I find right now I fatigue very quickly and am still recovering from spinal fusion 10 weeks ago
favorite thing in liquid stage - cauliflower Soup
favorite thing in purée stage - mince blended, guacamole and cheese was nachos without the chips
    good luck everyone

Thanks for the update. It's certainly a rough road at first. I start clear fluids tomorrow and an starving hungry tonight. Does the hunger sensation subside? I am a month still from moving to puréed diet which seems like forever!

  13. " userid="321485"]Well, I'm kind of disappointed, but I guess everything happens for a reason. My doctors office called and moved my procedure date from 9/8 to 9/25. I was getting so excited for next Friday and now have to wait a few more weeks . Oh well, I guess I have a few more weeks to prepare. It just sucks because I'm having my food funeral and probably packed on 5 lbs this week from eating everything that I need to say goodbye to!

    Procedure day: 9/8/17

Enjoy that food funeral Kiki! I'm day six of my pre op diet and finding it tough going today. It must be really disappointing to be delayed, I hope it is smooth sailing from here. Mel.

  14. Yeah, honestly I knew I'd feel a little down, it I was not expecting just how much.
We were never ones to go out all the time, or have elaborate dinner parties, or go crazy at social functions with food or anything- but suddenly not having food be part of your life at all, is a hard transition. No cooking on your own, or with your significant other, no trips to the grocery store and saying "this looks good" (healthy or otherwise), no sitting at the table for meals together (how long can you make 2 table spoons last...).... i didn't think it'd be that hard to just eat cottage cheese, yogurt and smoothies all the time lol ( just very very small amounts of those things)...kind of thinking "it's not forever" doesn't really seem to help....I'm thinking that as I transition to different foods and get more used to a schedule things should improve. When I feel a little stronger I can get out and do more stuff too, hopefully start being more active.

Sydsyd We are all behind you. Please keep in touch and let us know how you are going. Really hoping you turn the corner soon and are feeling much, much better x

  15. @Belle3endosleeve Ah, now that is smart. And it's true, we will be going hard at losing weight. It's not untrue to say we are eating much less and moving much more. It is interesting the idea that surgery is the "easy option". Seems far from easy to me. I have an amazing husband who tells me that it's a really brave choice, to give up something that you love (too much food) forever. And that gives me great perspective. It's true, we will need new coping strategies when food is no longer the reward or consolation prize.

Does your program require ongoing appointments with a psychologist and nutritionist?

  16. Hi Belle3endosleeve,

Thanks so much for your reply. I am almost 42, also have 3 kids and bmi is currently 36. I am about the start the 2 week pre procedure diet which is 2 shakes and a meal with 200g Protein and non starchy veg. My dr has a very strict post procedure diet of 4 weeks liquid only, so I imagine it's going to be a tough month! And the worst is no drinking even Water for the first 2 days. We are booked into a clinic for IV fluids only.

what is your pre and post procedure diet like?
