  1. Everything you eat in the first month feels like too much, but once you see the weight coming off you'll relax. I was most hungry during week 2 & 3. How full you get is definitely dependant on what you eat. Mashed potato vs grilled chicken for example

Everyone is different and some people bounce back a lot faster and are able to eat more at first. Everyone else will catch up in a few months and be getting the same amounts down. Just feel lucky you are doing well! I could easily drink liquids so I ditched the Protein Shakes because they left me hungry and I was just drinking calories away. I switched them out for soft foods to make me feel full.
Obviously stick with what your doctor recommends but just some information to keep in mind for later

  2. I’m two weeks post-op. And I feel major pangs of regret. My recovery is going fine but I’m missing food. I just want an egg or some cottage cheese. Does anyone have any tips for the regret?

Most people get this. It's mostly caused by habit and sometimes addiction. It will pass, I promise! Soon you'll think less about food and the cravings go. It also gets easier when you're not as restricted (:

  3. Hey everyone (: I started out with two bourbons and coke over 2 hours. Had absolutely no effect so I went for it. Had 3 shots and 3 more bourbons over about 2.5 hours. I did not get drunk faster than I normally would have. In fact I wouldn't even say I was that drunk. I got home about 30 minutes ago after finishing my last drink and am nearly sober.

My thoughts are basically that if you honestly feel ready then try one drink and increase if that goes down okay. I've always had a high tolerance for spirits so I wasn't expecting much difference.

Before surgery I could not handle wine. It made me drunk very fast and caused very bad dehydration. So obviously I won't touch wine for a long time! If you're a wine drinker I would definitely be more cautious because it's known to cause dehydration.

I'm not a big beer drinker so I didn't test it out.. But I feel like beer would probably go down totally fine except you wouldn't fit much in before you get full. So much liquid with so little effect!

Hopefully this gives people a little insight into drinking again. Obviously everyone is different and it may be the opposite for others. This is just my personal experience and opinion. The best advice I can give is to listen to your body. If you can eat and drink like normal and you feel ready theres no harm in trying a small amount. Just remember to not EXPECT to get drunk faster. Don't expect to feel sick, get bloated or get too full.

And yes, I can drink soft drink. And no, it does not give me gas pains or "stretch" my stomach. As soon as I eat food I'm full. (:

And lastly, alcohol does effect weight loss. Don't be shocked if you drink one weekend and then don't lose weight the next week. I'm fully aware of the calories and other ****. I just don't care. I'm young and I enjoy the occasional night out (:

  4. What do you think you're not eating enough?

I eat one wheetbix, then for lunch some grilled chicken and a little salad, then I'll just have whatever is for dinner but as a small portion.

If I feel like a snack, I will have a cheese stick, some jelly, fruit salad or some crackers and hommus. But honestly I eat anything and just make sure it's chewed nicely. Be creative! Also check out instagram #gastricsleeve and you'll see people posting their meals. You'll see a lot of cool stuff and it might make you hungry hehe

I am 8 weeks post op and down 56lbs

Some days I eat more, some days I eat less. I don't count calories. I eat until I'm full and eat vegis and meats first. I also occasionally have carbs like Pasta and potato.

I don't want to obsess over food and feel guilty because I haven't followed recommended plans. I'm listening to my body.

Unless you are mentally unwell and it's causing you to not eat, don't force it. Let you body naturally start to remind you to eat.

  5. Hi, I went back to work about 12 or so days after... Mainly because I was so bored!

I wouldn't make too many Soups or you'll end up hating them, but definitely make some! I personally have found that chewing is what is the difference between getting down foods and it's less about what you can tolerate. This only applies to healthier foods tho. I don't think you'd get sick from any Soup and it's good to have your food sorted so you don't have to overthink it when you're trying to recover (:

Anyway, because I am incredibly lazy, here's some things you can eat when you don't feel like planning ahead! Yoghurt, cheese sticks, cheese wheels, custard, baby food (this isn't recommended by a lot of doctors but I personally didn't see the problem), baked Beans, jelly, deli meat, boiled eggs (chewed to mush) , scrabbled eggs, wheat bix, porridge, Protein Shakes etc etc

This was all stuff I slowly introduced from two weeks. I'd eat a tiny nibble and wait. Then a little more. If it all went down okay then I'd eat it. Main purpose of Fluid and mushy stage is so that your staples can heal and is less about what you can tolerate (within reason).

  6. The first day after surgery is pretty terrible, but from then on its not too bad. I only had a two hour ride, but that was totally fine. Just remember what you do BEFORE travelling is what's important. If you get on the plane well hydrated then you won't have any problems! Only thing I could suggest is maybe bring a small pillow and a scarf. The scarf might be good in case you want to create a soft barrier between any incisoions and the seatbelts. Pillow just so you can rest as you may be tired still. Plus, sleeping makes the trip go fast!

You shouldn't really have much pain by day 3. I met a lot of people in hospital who were all fine (I know everyone is different but let's be positive!)

The oozing I'm unsure of? Why do you think there would be oozing? If you mean the incisions opening then it's unlikely if you just be careful. Support your body weight on something as you lower yourself into seats so that your torso isn't forced to stretch. I made my bf switch to a higher car because the low one wasnt fun [emoji14]

When you're in hospital they will give you the blood clot stockings. You should wear them on the plane! If they don't give you any just ask for some.

Anyways, good luck! (: Sorry if this isn't much help!

  7. Hey everyone!

I'm exactly two months post op and down 56lbs

I haven't had any trouble with eating or drinking and have been slowly going at my own pace, but I can essentially eat anything with no side effects

Anyway, considering my bounce back, I feel like I can easily manage a couple drinks and I'm absolutely dying to go out and relax. I thought it would take 6 months, but I honestly can't see how 4 months from now anything would be different. I'm healed and cleared for all foods, so if I feel ready isn't that enough of a reason to try?

So, when did everyone have their first drink after their op?

    No negative comments please (:

  8. I thought I read a post some time ago about someone having sneezing attacks after eating just a little too much but could not find it through a search. Anyway, at the time I thought they were nuts.
Fast forward to being nearly 6 months post op (back in February) and I am able to eat anything I want. I noticed, and it is recognized by my wife and coworkers as well, that when I slightly over eat solid/heavy foods like chicken, I will get a sneezing attack. I know, you think I am crazy but I can tell before I sneeze that I have eaten a little too much because it is a pressure point that I can feel. It is almost like a switch that tells me "Hey idiot, stop eating".... I know the attack is coming and it results in about 10-20 sneezes unless I can move around enough to allow the food to settle differently.
It is the craziest thing and I was so skeptical of the other poster who said that it happened to them, at least until it happened to me. It is now a tell tale sign that I ate just a little too much and it pushes on a pressure point that triggers it. I am almost 1 year out and I now have a built in "full meter" with my sneezing attacks.
    Anyone else experience this?

Okay, sooooo, this is totally a thing.

I have this thing called sun sneezing. Basically, walking from inside to outside can cause me to sneeze. This is a legit thing which you can look up. But for overeating, try Snatiation

BEFORE surgery I use to sneeze when I was hungry. Id start to feel sick, sorta like car sickness. Then I'd get the need to sneeze, and after I did the sickness would go away. Now after surgery I don't get hungry to a point that causes that sick feeling. Instead, I get it after my first bite of food when hungry. And yup, it makes me sneeze!

So, I did some research and turns out it's all related. There's a lot of people who sneeze when hungry or after eating. It's all just nerves being stimulated.

You can google a bit and you'll find a lot of people talking about their different triggers. It's really interesting!

  9. 6 weeks post op with no problems so far until.. Yesterday I had a mouthful of freshly squeezed orange juice. As soon as it hit my mouth I had this insane urge to just skull buckets worth of this stuff. I obviously didn't because of high sugar, but wow it was intense! Ever since then I cannot get enough Water. I am thirsty non stop! My pee is clear and I have no dehydration symptoms. Since I've woken up this morning about 1 hour ago I've already drank 600ml (20oz). I am lucky because I can already drink without sipping. I am still craving the juice. Everytime I think about it I get thirsty. What the heck is this??

  10. I am 3 weeks out and I'm on puree too. Only difference is I've been on puree since day 5. It's does get better! It might just be that it was a little too heavy. I wouldn't give up on it, just try eating one bite and then leaving it for half an hour. Sometimes it takes me over an hour to get things down but it's worth it because I like knowing I'm slowly giving my body some nutrients (: just bet use to eating things cold for a while! But yes I know the lump feeling you're talking about. I've found personally that comes from eating heavier foods to quick. I think it's might be the food moving into the sleeve slowly. Because it's thicker it takes a bit longer to get through the opening. I fix it with a hot drink. Just a couple mouth fulls to help dissolve and break up whatever is sitting there. (: hope this helps

  11. I think people seem to forget that some foods can be crazy high in calories. If you wanted to maintain at 2000+ calories then you'd just find foods that get that into you. Especially if you wanted to start building muscle and such. I've been ignoring all this calorie crap to be honest. I'm 5'11 and young so obviously what other females on here eat isn't going to work for me. Listen to your stomach. If you're full, stop eating. In a few months you'll be able to eat more. If you go on Instagram and put in #gastricsleeve you can see people 6+ months out posting their food and they're not tiny portions! They're just healthy and balanced and they look DELICIOUS

  12. Lots of Protein powders are Water only. If desperate can drink up & go or equivalent as these don't need refrigeration (but lots of sugar so not really the best). You could buy some jelly cups, baby food, fruit cups, cup a Soups, canned tuna, canned chicken. You could freeze some soups that are still yummy cold. Also you can put long life milk that doesn't need refrigeration until after you open it. If you can still cook the canned soups with added portion powder is good too. Good luck!

  13. I haven't gone off my plan. I'm just sick of people who it works for saying to eat less. Just because I'm not feeling full and I'm frustrated doesn't mean I'm not doing well. Ive lost 28.2lb so far... Sometimes people just want to vent, it's not always about solutions. Sometimes you just want to know people understand and to say yes that does sound pretty lame. Its sad that people who have the same problem with food can simply say 'get some control". Maybe you should of before you had surgery then? It's not helpful, is it? I'm 6ft tall and young. Maybe my metabolism is just faster and I'm just bloody hungry. Simple as that.

  14. I have this same problems and I'm only 11 days post op. I can eat all puree no problem and can drink Water freely. I've had nothing coming back up, no pain, no bloating, no heartburn... It makes me worry that I'll fail. It's really frustrating hearing people say to just eat less. If I had the restraint I wouldn't of needed the surgery in the first place. I just want to move onto solids faster so I can feel full and not like I'm constantly hungry.

  15. If it's on your plan and working for you, then it's ok.
We don't lose weight because of broth (and broth isn't on the plan for weight loss purposes). We lose weight because of 2 reasons. A surgically-induced lower set-point, and reduced calories.
The clear liquid phase is in place to make sure the patient is consuming enough liquids to stay hydrated. Many people would get so full on heavier foods, that they wouldn't get their Fluid in (the swelling during the first 2-3 weeks is pretty significant). Plus, liquids create the least strain on the staple line, and that is important until that wound can heal over (between 6 and 9 weeks).
Every patient is different. Some can tolerate purees right away, some would have trouble. Luck of the draw, I think [emoji6] The main thing is we are all super careful for the first 2 months, because overdoing it could become a life and death situation.

Yes definitely. I think I'm just very lucky to be able to tolerate it. I Water down my Soups so they are easier for my new stomach because I don't want to put to much strain on it. I know that the broths aren't for weight loss, but wow I'd be going crazy on just that! Good for habit forming though I can imagine
