  1. I am 17 months out. I am going to tell you my thoughts but please don't take them for the norm. My diet/life style works for me and may not work for anyone else.

I have been off of all carbonated beverages for 2 years now. I currently eat anything I want but stay away from bread and Pasta (anything made with flour actually). Now when I say I stay away from it that doesn't mean I don't have a bite or a taste occasionally but for the most part I stay away. I do have a small bowl of ice cream every now and then. I also eat small chocolate candies periodically. I have an alcoholic drink (probably about 2 shots) almost every night with a nightly cigar. I normally don't eat vegetables or fruit (I rely on my Multivitamin for those nutrients) but I have some occasionally if I want. My diet mostly consists of Protein and fats. I don't eat a lot of red meat because I find it hard to digest. I mostly eat chicken, turkey and fish. I made my goal weight December 1st, 2018 and have maintained it since then (between 165 and 170 lbs). I just had blood work for my Primary care provider and all results were within normal ranges. I no longer have diabetes, high blood pressure or high cholesterol. My doctor is very happy with my results and is impressed at how disciplined I am with my diet and lifestyle.

  2. I am not experiencing pain but I can definitely feel it more than ever before. I am careful when I roll over while in bed so I don't hurt it. What really bothers me is laying in bed and when I move over the excess skin on my butt rolls over on top of itself and it feels like I am laying on a 2x4 or something.

  3. I use Journey Bariatric chewable Multivitamins that I purchase from the Bariatric Center where I had my surgery done. I am sure I am probably paying more for them, getting them through the surgery center but something as important as my success is worth it. This is the only brand the surgery center sells so it is what they recommend. I pay $25 a month.

  4. For years I had thought about having bypass surgery but the insurance plans my employer offered didn't cover it. A couple years ago they changed plans and it was now an option. I was 4 months into the required 6 month process, had met and was approved by the psych doctor and was about to have my appointment to have the scope of my stomach done when my employer changed insurance providers again and it was no longer covered. After having to drop out of the program I attended different educational weight loss programs and different diets but still couldn't lose the weight on my own. About a year later insurance providers changed again and again it was covered so I jumped in and started the 6 month process all over again.

Needless to say by the time my surgery date got here I was so ready for it. I was not nervous at all, I was very educated on what to expect and had my post surgery plan all mapped out. I remember telling the dietician at my last appointment that I was going to become the "Poster Child for Bariatric Surgery". My preparedness and knowledge made the process very easy. I am very grateful for the path I was forced to take to have my surgery, I think it is why I have been so successful.

To make a long story short, do your home work, get smart on the procedure, diet and lifestyle so you are prepared the best you can be for this life changing surgery.

    Good Luck and best wishes.

  5. I am 55 yrs old and started walking about 3 miles a day after having surgery. After about 6 months I started running. I was running up to 4 miles 3 times a week. I would have liked to run more but I have had re-constructive knee surgery on my right knee twice and have very little meniscus left. I ran 2 organized 5K's in 2018 so anything is possible. I tried the gym but just couldn't get into it. I still walk about 3 miles a day and run during warmer weather.

  6. For some reason losing weight this past week has been very easy (I am almost concerned at how easy it was). I was in Western New York the week of Thanksgiving visiting family. I really expected to gain a pound or two while on vacation but much to my surprise the weight just kept falling off.

I got home from vacation yesterday and even with the 16 hour drive each way and Thanksgiving week I am down about 5 lbs. I weighed this morning when I got up and was happily surprised the scale told me 166.6 lbs. My goal weight is 165 lbs so I should be there later this week.

People tell me I am too skinny or it doesn't look like I weigh that much. My wife says I am too bony now and misses hugging a well padded man.

I get the feeling it is going to be harder to maintain my weight where I am then losing my weight. I don't want to lose any more and I definitely don't want to gain any of it back.

  7. I am almost 15 months Post Op (RnY Bypass). My goal weight is 165 lbs and this afternoon I weighed in at 170.0, only 5 lbs away. I am starting to feel a lot of emotion about my journey. It has been a lot easier than I thought it would be and the weight loss was slower than I expected but it was steady. I now find myself wondering if I am going to stop losing when I reach 165 lbs or will I continue? Will it have to be a daily thought to eat a little more than I am eating now so I will stop losing? I am excited for Thanksgiving and know that I won't have any problems eating correctly and not over eating, Once I set my mind to something I have no problem achieving it, I almost enjoy the challenge.

I would like to hear from others on how they felt as they approached their goal weight. Was it hard to maintain or did you keep losing?

  8. I had nose surgery to repair a deviated septum this past Wednesday. I still have splints inside by nose so I am not allowed to blow it and I feel like I have the flu. Since Wednesday I have lost 5 lbs and now have broken out with the Shingles Rash. They say Shingles is brought on by a weaken immune system so I am thinking the Nose surgery might have been just a little too much for me right now. I think I would have been smart to have taken the Shingles Vaccine when it was offered to me a few months back. I am still eating and drinking what I should but am losing weight a lot faster than I have in months.

  9. I have been told no carbonated drinks ever again and that includes beer so I drink whiskey or rum or wine and my surgeon doesn't have an issue with that.

The supplements are for the rest of our lives! That is 1 rule that can not be bent or broken or you will have issues. I am 14 months post op and I take 2 chewable Multi Vitamins a day (one in the morning and one before bed). I also take 2 Calcium with Vitamin D every day around lunch time.

Don’t weight yourself in the afternoon, rookie mistake

My weight doesn't fluctuate more than a pound during the day usually. I knew they had the fluids really running during surgery so I knew I would be heavier than normal, I was just surprised at just how much.

I am back to normal this morning at 177.6 lbs.

  11. I got up this morning and weighed 179.6. This afternoon I weighed 182.0. I haven't eaten anything today (totally nothing).

I had nasal surgery this morning to repair a deviated septum (that's why I haven't eaten yet today), they must have really pumped me full of fluids during the procedure. I have been peeing a lot since getting released and was really surprised when I stepped on the scale. I hope it goes away as fast as I gained it, I don't want to be above 180lbs. LOL

How often are you having a cigar? Are they causing you any problems?

I am not the same person that posted earlier about smoking a cigar but thought I would chime in.

Everyone is different and every situation is different, what might work for one might not work for anyone else. I smoke a quality (not a gas station bought) cigar about every night. I also have my cigar with either a glass of whiskey or rum. I am in really good shape and have done very well after my surgery. I actually ran my 2nd 5K yesterday (my first one was back in May) and finished 3rd in my age group.

Clearly the cigar smoking is not slowing me down at all.
