    Diabetic Questions

Before surgery I was taking metformin, 3 shots of novalog, 2 shots of lantus and 1 shot of victoza every day. I stopped all meds when I went on my liquid diet a week prior to surgery. I noticed my sugar level was higher then it should be about 2 weeks after surgery so I went back to taking 1 shot of lantus before bed and I am still taking it. They say I will always have diabetes it is just controlled very well. I am currently taking 25 units of Lantus every night before bed. I wake up and my sugar is in the 70's and 80's. I had my A1C checked about a month ago and it was 5.4. My HIgh Blood Pressure and High Cholestrol are gone. I don't take any meds other than the lantus and my multi vitamin and calcium.

    Worlds longest stall

I am probably not one to give advice, my stalls last for months. Don't feel guilty about having a treat every now and then, sometimes eating something different entices your body to start losing again. Something that worked for me was to change my exercise. I used to go to the gym and lift weights but after awhile I stalled and I couldn't lose any more. I then decided to stop going to the gym and I started running and lost 15 lbs pretty quickly. Don't get stuck in a routine, keep your body guessing what's coming next. Change your exercise habits from time to time, and change what you are eating.
  3. Not looking to criticize anyone, I just thought it would be fun to know what everyone had for dinner tonight. I am about 11 1/2 months post op and am doing great. Tonight for dinner I had 1/2 can of re-fried beans with some cheese, salsa, sour cream and some black olives. What did you have?

    What are slider foods?

I still eat 4 oz of cottage cheese for breakfast every day. I was told by my doctor that because of the consistency it is considered a slider food. Has anyone else heard this before?

    I got cocky

Eggs are a good source of protein. It took me about 6 months before I could eat more than 1 and I still have a problem eating 2 at a sitting and I am about 1 year out. Off subject a little, did you know you can order scrambled eggs at McDonald's? It's about 2 eggs and they only charge about $2.00. I am not certain but for people like us it is probably the best choice we can make while away from home.
  6. I got impatient,I couldn't wait to do my 1 year picture so I am posting my 11 month progress picture.
  7. I mostly concentrate on protein. I stay away from foods that I used to consider healthy. I am 1 year post op and 90% of my daily intake is still protein. I have the occasional salad or piece of fruit but I can count how often per month on one hand. I just received the results from lab work I had done for my upcoming 6 month primary care physician appointment and all my numbers were perfect. My advice to anyone having the surgery or recently had it, Don't eat something because it is good for you, eat stuff your body needs and try to stay away from everything else.

    No longer have sleep apnea

I had a post surgery sleep study done this past Saturday. I am still required to use my cpap but they turned my pressure down from 14 to 6. Hopefully I won't need mine in another few months.
  9. Anyone else obsessed with how they look? I can't help looking at my reflection when ever possible. I do a lot of walking while at work and I purposely check my reflection out every time I walk in front of a store front with big windows. I don't want to sound vane or boastful but I am so happy with the way I look and feel. I think this is the happiest I have ever been in my life. I am proud of where I am at and how I got here.
  10. after I got under 200 lbs I started running. I am running 3.5 miles twice a week at an average pace of 11:15 minutes per mile. I do believe staying hydrated and the exercise is helping with the loose skin but I still have it and wish it would go away. Thanks everyone for the comments. It has been an amazing journey that I would do again in a heart beat. It was well worth everything I have given up and the life style changes I have made.

    Post surgery diabetes

I still take 25 units of Lantus before bed (this is the only meds I take). If I don't I wake up and my sugar is around 125. It doesn't matter what I eat my body likes to create glucose while I sleep. By taking the lantus I wake up and my sugar is between 70 and 100 in the morning. My morning reading is and always has been the highest reading of the day. I only take my sugar reading before I eat, never within 3 hours of eating (I know it would be higher after I eat).

How long did it take to lose 100lbs

I don't think I will ever lose 100 lbs. I started at 265 lbs Sept 6th 2017 and I have been at about 185 for a couple months. I am very happy with where I am and If I don't lose any more weight I can be happy. I have lost 80 lbs consider myself very healthy. People say I don't have another 20 lbs to lose.

    any regrets and vitamins

NO Regrets! I get my vitamins from my surgeons office. They may charge a little more but if the surgeon's office sells them they must be good. The name on the bottle is Journey (I think they are produced locally).

    Stressed and WAITING!!!!

I went thru 4 of the 6 month insurance required appointments and then my employer changed my insurance and was no longer covered for the surgery so I had to stop. It took a year (and another employer) before I could get insurance that would cover it again and then I had to start the 6 month program all over. It was a long journey but well worth it. Hang in there and be patient.

  16. My surgeon led me to believe that the carbonation could possibly stretch my stomach back out causing me to eat more and lose less weight.
  17. Yup, My doctor made me cut them out as soon as I started the program. I haven't had a soda, beer or sparkling anything (nothing with carbonation) in about 15 months now. I do drink alcohol though, I have 1 drink a night either Schnapps, wine, rum or whiskey. The doctor hasn't objected because I have done so well. Yes it is empty calories but I make sure I get plenty of exercise to burn them off. I am walking 3 miles every day and on Sunday's and Wednesday's I am running 3 1/2 miles plus do my walking.

    How do you respond?

I was diabetic before surgery also, at one point in time my A1C was over 11. I was taking the following every day to control it; 4 Metformin (pills) 120 units of Lantis (2injections) 3 injections of Novalog Victoza injection A total of 6 injections a day before surgery. As of now the only medication I take for the diabetes is one injection of 25 units of lantis before bed (and I am slowly decreasing that). Getting rid of the diabetes was my primary goal of having the surgery. The surgery also cured my high blood pressure and high cholesterol. I am off all prescription medication now except the 1 small injection a day of lantis (insulin).

Is anyone documenting their Journey on YouTube?

not much into the youtube stuff, I took pictures wearing the same thing, standing in the same position and put them side by side in one picture. I have about 4 or 5 months (6 different pictures). I don't want to pollute this topic so if you or anyone else is interested in my pictures private message me and I will share them.
  20. I had a similar problem at first. I was very constipated and when it finally worked it's way to the door it was too big and too hard to come out. I actually had to use my finger to break it up and assist it to come out. I know this is all disgusting but if you are stopped up it could be very dangerous you need to get it taken care of sooner than later. I now take a double dose of Miralax 2 to 3 times a week just to make sure I don't get plugged up again.
  21. Not really frustrated, I just wanted to post something today. In a couple days I will hit my 9 month post op date. I am very happy where I am but am wondering if I will ever reach my goal of 165lbs. My weight loss is very slow now and not very steady, I was at the 194 lbs mark for almost 4 months before I started losing again (I am now at 184 lbs). I am running 3 1/2 miles twice a week, I haven't had a carbonated beverage in 15 months, I still mostly eat protein and stay away from breads, pasta and potatoes. I am doing 45 sit-ups a day and 20 pushups. I have what I consider a lot of excess skin but no where near as much as most people who have lost 80 lbs. I know I my skin weighs a little bit so I am wondering if it is even possible to get to 165 lbs. I am going to keep at it and even if I never reach my goal of 165 lbs I am very happy where I am today.

    Will I Ever Get There?

A picture explains better than my stats.

    Will I Ever Get There?

After surgery I started with weight training but am not one to be in doors in a small stinky room. I like wide open spaces, fresh air and sunlight. That's why I started running. I do a lot of lifting in my daily routine and on weekends I am usually out at my property cutting, splitting and stacking firewood, or raking leaves. I figure that is my weight training.

    General questions

from what I have heard, if you have nicotine, alcohol, or recreational drugs in your system the day of your surgery the doctor will cancel your procedure.

    Exercise!

I started walking, I actually started back to walking about 4 days after surgery. At 6 weeks post op I went back to the gym and started upper body training. Once I got under 200 lbs I decided to start running again. I ran my first 5K this past weekend (8 months post op). I ran the entire 3.1 miles in just under 35 minutes. Do as much as you can but stay away from strenuous stomach exercises until you are at least 8 weeks post op.
