I am getting sleeved by Dr. Corvala next Thursday, 3/22/18. I am excited but nervous all at the same time. I have spent a lot of time researching and reading reviews, so far I like what I have seen about him and his staff. I have a friend that had used him a couple years and my PCP's daughter went to him last summer..... Nothing but great things to say about him. I would love to hear more feedback from others that may have gone to him.

    6 days and counting......

Good luck!! Please check back in and let us know how it went. I was sleeved by Dr. Corvala exactly 7 months before you. It has been an adjustment, but I am so happy i did it. Can't wait for you check in after surgery.

I just got my FMLA paperwork to complete before my surgery. I'm a bean counter and basically spend my days glued to my desk. I also moonlight as a waitress on Saturday nights. I'm guessing that it will take me longer to get back to working at the restaurant. For my regular job I'm thinking if I'm having surgery on a Tuesday that I could possibly go back the following Monday...6 days?? How long were you out of work and what industry are you in?

    Thanks

I also work a desk job, had surgery on a Monday, went back to work the following Monday. I felt OK, but was a kind of a zombie that whole week. Depending on you situation, you can probably go back after 1 week off, but I'd suggest 2.

  3. Whatever you decide cook WAY less. If you eat out, eat off some one elses plate.

You will be able to eat mashed potatoes or candied yams. Getting it done just before the holidays might sound tough, but look at the bright side- no holiday season weight gain this year. Also, I started to feel a lot better with more energy about the 1 month, so although the food experience will be much different, you should still be able to enjoy good company. Good luck!

  4. I hiccup when I'm full. I had a runny nose for the first month post op (annoying but totally gone now). Also, my taste buds must have changed because I do not miss beer. Not even a little bit. I was so worried about having to give up beer, but now I dont even want it. My old self would be sad, but my new self is just so happy getting healthy.

I wonder if people think their nose has grown because they have lost weight in their face?

  5. Welcome @monkeyol! If I have learned anything, some people will support you and others will not. Many do not understand the surgery, and a lot of people have never been over weight. They may just be worried for your safety. Now saying that, there is a reason I only decided to tell a couple family members and my husband. You need all the support you can get, and any negativity just needs to be shut out and ignored if possible. I am the same height, and a very similar weight and chose to have the surgery as well. I was having serious arthritis issues, due to the extra weight, which made it hard to exercise. I am only 1 and a half months post op, but can tell you I do not regret my decision even one bit. The decision to undergo surgery is a personal one, one you will have to decide on yourself, but I will say for me it has given me the tools to get my life back. There are a ton of vets on here that will be a tremendous source of information, and lots of us newbies on here for support. Chin up girl, you know the reason you are doing this. Show them how hard you are willing to fight for your health.

Thanks everyone for all the support! I'm so glad I stumbled on Bariatric Pal a few years back and found Dr. Illan through this website. I'm still not to my goal but I feel so much better in my own skin.

Good luck with school this semester! Life gets crazy, thanks so much for checking in! So happy to hear you feel better in your own skin. It makes me soo happy to hear that.

@Cherbear416 How are you doing a month and a half out? :)

Things are going great. I can eat pretty much "anything" again, which has been nice to be able to eat veggies. I missed them so much. Its so much easier to say, "No thanks" to the crap food I used to be tempted by. Going out to eat is still kind of tough with co-workers, but I've noticed people tend to pay more attention to themselves, than what I'm eating anyways. I feel really good. Its amazing what loosing 20 lbs will do for even just my comfort level. I haven't needed to go out and buy any new clothes yet, as I have apparently been stocking clothes that were too small for me in the back of my closet that I haven't worn for years. I got a groupon for Hot Yoga, and have been doing that about 2x a week, but I know I need to kick my work out schedule up a notch. Especially now that I am getting energy back. The first few weeks were hard, but the one month mark I really started to feel like myself again. I have been getting my Vitamin B injections, which has really helped with energy levels as well. I know I will have to work hard to meet my goal, but I am up for the challenge.

Oh whoops I forgot you were going with a different company! They may still give you a gift bag I'm not sure but yeah I would say still check a bag anyway if you want souvenirs or anything. :)

@specialkron thanks so much for the advice. Because I am traveling alone, the plain ride home is one of the most nerve racking things I worry about. I'll plan on bringing a small bag for souvenirs. Did you pack bullion cubes, or did you pick some up down in MX? That would be an easy thing to pack in my purse. About how long after surgery were you back to feeling well? You are about six weeks out now, I've heard thats about the time people start to feel good again (although everyone is different). What have you found most challenging? Congrats on the weight loss! I am so excited to get down to MX this month! I'll continue to follow your progress.

Fun facts about chia seeds. 😊

11g of Fiber for a serving (about 2Tbsp) pretty awesome I use them in my overnight oats.

This is a great reminder. Getting in my goal of 27g of Fiber a day can be tricky. I am always looking for new ways / recipes to get my fiber in from whole sources.

I realize this feed is kinda old, but I am planning to get sleeved Oct 30th and just looking around for other Utah people. Looks like most everyone got surgery done some time ago though.

Welcome! I am 1 month post op today. Let me know if you have any questions.

  10. When you eat sugar, your body will crave sugar. I found this out quick pre-op doing the whole 30 diet. I have always had a sweet tooth, but totally cutting out sugar during the diet made me loose that craving. Sounds to me like the sauce on your dinner probably had a lot of sugar in it, or a lot of refined carbs (which turn to sugar). That craving/feeling is scary because it is so powerful and I can totally relate. Make sure you are logging your food on myfitness pal and you will see which foods might have spiked you want for sugar, especially if you eat stuff that has refined sugar in it. Good luck, you got this.

How are you doing another month out? I'll be scheduling surgery soon and will fly from Utah I haven't been on a plane in 22 years. I'm more nervous about fitting in the seat than actual surgery. Can you tell me who you flew with?

I was just down in Mexico a few weeks ago, and flew from Utah. I am feeling great, and so excited that I am off of the liquid only and on the pureed foods now. I flew with Southwest. You can call them, and ask them which flights are typically the least crowded. I paid the extra $30 for the Early Bird check in so that I could be towards the front of the line, and hopfully pick my very own seat. If you request wheel chair access/assistance, you will not need to pay the Early bird fee, and will be boarded first. If the plane isnt full, you can probably take the window and the middle seat. I am so excited for you to go and do this. Its exciting because things like, fitting in an airplane seat, will not be a worry for you in the future. Good luck!

Totally forgot to take a pic, but I made this awesome recipe today. One of the times I wish I couldn't just eat a few bites! Lol Had to eliminate the bun after two bites so that I don't get too full too quick though.

This looks amazing. I can't wait until I can eat normal food again. I miss my veggies soo much!

I paid my deposit with Dr Illian for November and Ive had a few links sent to me by concerned family etc... that there advising no travel to areas in Mexico and Tijuana is on the list due to an to uprise in Violence w gangs shooting in the streets . How was your experience? I'm getting stressed out

I just returned from Tijuana yesterday. Honestly, I don't think that Tijuana is the best vacation get a way location. However, when you travel for surgey they keep you pretty confined to safe areas. If you were traveling for vacation, I'd say pick somewhere else. However, especially with the doctor you chose they will keep you in safe areas. Good luck to you,

I've always understood it's not very safe to fly so close after major surgery. Risk of pulmonary embolism and blood clots. It sounds like your on your way home after about 4 or 5 days after surgery. How safe is that considered?

My doctors started me on blood thinners prior to the flight for this very reason, and now that I am home, have to continue them for about a week.

So here I am 2 days post op- my doctor had to repair a hiatal hernia and most of the soreness is at that site. I've been walking since I was brought up from recovery so most of the shoulder pain is gone. My main problem is gas - I'm sucking down gas x pills. No other real issues but I am struggling getting down the 34 oz minimum liquids my doctor said, because after every swallow is severe gas. Oh well tomorrow is another day.

That's rough that you are recovering from both surgeries, but good you were able to get another issue fixed at the same time. After my second c-section I had HORRIBLE gas pain. The only thing that helped me at that time was walking, and knowing that it would eventually pass. Hang in there! This will all be a distant memory before you know it.

Well my surgery went well, the recovery has been tough. Since I'm prob to nausea they have been giving me anti-nausea meds. Two bouts of vomiting which nothing came up. They considered keeping me one more night, but decided to let me go home. The gas pain was real but walking helped a great bit.

Hi this is my first post , I am scheduled for the sleeve on Aug 21, on day 6 of liquid diet . Not hungry at all but suddenly got diarrhea this evening. Using Bariatric Fusion shakes .I am 65 Mom of 4 , Grandma of 10 . I want to live longer to see all my Grandkids grow up .

That is a great reason for the surgery! I will also have surgery on Aug 21. This time next week.. eeek!

Hey everyone, I'm a single 34 yr old and my surgery for the sleeve has been scheduled for Aug 22nd. I've been really focused up till now, Lost 20 lbs originally with really regular gym going and fairly decent eating. I went on vacation and gained 5 back :/ so working at getting back in the swing of things.

I'm starting to get nervous. I have a long family history of people having gastric bypass so once the dr said i needed it I just went ok let's get it done. Now that it's booked I'm more apprehensive but I know this is for the best.

I am right in front of you on the 21st. This final week is a killer. What a roller coaster of emotions!

  21. Welcome! I too will be having surgery with Dr. Corvala. I was also concerned about not having any local follow up, but have just decided to read up as much as I can and prepare for what is to come. My sleeve surgery is 1 week from today. Feel free to hit me up with any questions. I will give you feedback once I am home from Mexico. I have also decided to sign up for some therapy sessions. Not everyone needs therapy, but I wanted someone in my corner. I get so worried about failure-and try to push it to the back of my mind. Can you look to see if there are any WLS support groups in your area? There is a ton of good information on here, and a lot of seasoned WLS Pros that have great advice. My advice? Read read read. You can do this! Good luck to you on this journey!

  22. Hi group! Surgery in just over a week, and wondering what you ate the first couple weeks out of surgery? I currently eat a plant based diet that consists of a lot of raw veggies. I have come to terms with the fact that I wont be munching on raw broccoli or spinach for a few weeks until my stomach will alow me to each solids again.

I plan to eat veggie broth, although I have ordered some Bone Broth (im struggling with this) to mix with it because I am so concerned about getting the amount of Protein that is recommended those first couple weeks. I am also on a vegan Protein Shake. Any other ideas? I think once I'm back to eating "normal" food it shouldn't be hard to get enough protein. It will be lower than my dr. recommends, but still plenty and I feel sufficient.
