  1. Awesome, Dr Jawad is known as one of the best in the business. He doesn't talk a lot but has tons of experience and has done thousands of these procedures. I loved that he uses the davinci robot for the procedure which I don't think you find in most places. My wife and I were both sleeved by him with no complications and quick recoveries. The ORMC facilities were great also. When is your surgery?

Most likely towards the end of the year due to the 6 month diet. I'm really excited

  2. I'm glad I'm not the only one who feels like that Robert!
I worry about the anaesthetic, about coming out fro it. It's the thing that is nagging in the back of my mind and, even though I know it's irrational. But that's the problem with irrational thoughts!
I'm just focussing on every other part, where my head's much better.

See you when we come round!

It's a totally rational fear, but one that is not unexpected!

  3. I'm 4 days post op and this was my first surgery. My biggest fear was not waking up from the anesthesia but I had decided it was a necessary risk in order to get my weight and health under control. You're definitely better off having surgery at a younger age while still healthy as opposed to having a heart attack or something else down the road. After having the procedure done, I can look back and realize I was worrying much more than I should have. All of the pre-op testing and analysis that goes on before they will even put you under goes to show that you probably won't be recommended for surgery if you are a risk. Thousands of people go under anesthesia every day and the doctors really do know what they are doing. They are in complete control of your body while you are under since you have a breathing tube and they are monitoring and controlling blood pressure, oxygen, etc. The worst part of it for me was a headache and sore throat for a day or two. The biggest thing I wasn't prepared for was the pain, nausea, and inability to eat/drink for a few days due to the sleeve. It has gotten better every day though and the lbs are coming off so I'm still glad I went through with it. Be sure your mentally prepared for the journey, its not easy at first, but It may be one of the best decisions of your life! Best of luck!

Thank you so much for your amazing response! I'm really happy to see that you and I are both having the same doctor as well! I really do like Dr. Jawad! He seemed like such an amazing guy and very caring for what he does!

  4. Hi there -
I'm a fellow newbie who went into my surgeon and asked for a sleeve gastrectomy and was told that I weighed too much for the sleeve alone to be effective. My high weight was 412. Now you may be much taller than I am at 5'6", but everything I have read since has confirmed that for someone with a BMI > 50 the DS is best. I'm now on the 6 month medically-supervised weight loss program my insurance requires, waiting to get my surgery date.
I know the DS is a big procedure, but then again, I'm a big person.

Same here! I'm 5-10, so our BMI is very close. I'm a little behind you, I'm awaiting my first appointment for the first weigh in!

  5. Hey guys! My name is Robert, today I just saw Dr. Jawad at ORMC, in Orlando, Florida. At today's appointment, we discussed three possible procedures. I currently weigh 430 pounds, and he decided that the best operation for me, would be a duodenal switch! I'm super nervous about the operation, but I can see nothing but the results, and amazing responses about the operation!

I absolutely love this community that I have found, do you guys have been absolutely amazing with your support! Any tips or feedback about the surgery that you can give me I would love to have!

    Thank you so much!

  6. Do you all know if they normally provide any kind of dietitian? When I called the doctors office they stated that they don't have any strict kind of diet plan, I didn't know if that was something I have to go through health insurance to get or whatever

  7. My insurance company did not require a 6-month supervised diet, but many health insurance companies do have this requirement.
It usually consists of six visits with a physician, nurse practitioner or PA spaced six months apart. Each visit requires a weigh-in and a quick documented 'educational session' on weight control.
My insurance company required one consultation with a dietitian pre-op. My consultation was done telephonically (over the phone).

Thank you so much for the valuable feedback!

  8. Hey guys! So, I'm going to have my consultation with my surgeon in a few weeks. However from what I have been told, the health insurance is going to want me to enrole in a six-month diet. Is that a normal thing? Also, do you know if something like that is usually supervised with the nutritionist or a dietitian?

  9. I'm so happy to a found this app, there are so many people here who are in my shoes, today I scheduled my appointment with my doctor to have a consultation and decide which surgery is going to be best for me. I'm very lucky to where my health insurance is covering the procedure, and at 410 pounds I really want to be able to live a full life of health! I've never had anything like this done before and I am extremely nervous. I'm just really happy that there's a form where I can turn to for emotional support.
