JohnnyCakes got a reaction from Chrisb428 in Thyroid issues
i had really bad subclinical hypothyroidism for years pre-surgery. no medication worked and i gained 20lbs a year for 5 years straight.
after surgery i have no thyroid issues at all. it completely resolved it.

no, no challenges at all.
and i’m not trying to be flippant, but, getting to the goal itself was the reward! it’s the thing i have wanted my whole life and it’s here and i can’t believe it.
every time i go up three flights of stairs and don’t even breathe hard, that’s my reward.
every time i sit on the floor and play with my niece, it’s a reward.
every sports game i take my nephew to, which i couldn’t before bc i couldn’t fit in the seats, it’s a reward.
every day is a reward in a hundred different ways.

JohnnyCakes got a reaction from Mattymatt in Somewhere along the line ...
from the research i've done, you basically have a "genetic reaction" to the surgery. in other words, don't beat yourself up or OBSESS (a big problem around here) about whether you lose 65% or 75% or 85% of your excess weight. the initial loss is virtually all out of your hands.
it's the long-term years afterwards that your behavior and healthy habits will determine if you keep it off. that's what you control. that's what you should focus on.
just try to be at peace with wherever you land after a year or so. it's nothing you did wrong (or right, tbh). it just is what it is. and it will be 1,000x better than where you were pre-surgery!

JohnnyCakes got a reaction from FluffyChix in Need typical day menu
i'm almost 6 months out.
every day i have:
1 bottle of Isopure Protein Drink (40g protein)
1 individual serving package of plain fat-free Skyr yogurt
1 can of organic refried Beans
2 eggs cooked in 1/2 tbsp MCT oil
that keeps me full during the day. then i'll eat a light dinner usually of vegetables primary and fish/meat secondary.
all in all it's around 1,000 calories/day. not that i'm counting. i don't count calories nor have i ever weighed my food. i put emphasis on having zero sugar, a little bit of good carbs, as much Protein as possible, and minimizing fat but not being crazy strict about it.
i never cheat. not because i'm awesome but because i have exactly ZERO interest in fast food, sweets, or anything unhealthy.
some days my body is more hungry and i feed it. other days it's not hungry and i don't. i think that about 3 months post-op and onward, the hunger cues are very accurate and it's important to listen to them. constant overfeeding isn't good, nor is constant underfeeding. keep it varied, keep your body guessing.
i have NOT followed my doctor's advice to eat 3 square meals a day with no snacking. i eat what i described above throughout the day. i see why my surgeon's office recommends that, because it teaches those with bad eating habits to be better. but i don't have bad eating habits, never really have. to me, that schedule creates unnecessary hunger and then the desire to eat too much at meal time. i know i end up eating less overall calories doing it my way than the 3 meals/day way. but everyone is different and has to do what they feel is right and be honest with themselves.
(btw - i'm in the 80% percentile of weight loss performance for gastric bypass patients)

Word!
Apparently my fat ass didn't quite "get" the memo about the quick and humongous results. I think it may be a reading comprehension thing--ever since I had the surgery removing my head from my ass, my ass has become very very dumb...

JohnnyCakes got a reaction from SampTheChamp in 8 months before/after - 140lbs down - RNY GB
feel amazing/incredible/extraordinary!!! words can't describe. a complete 180 life reversal. i'm alive again.
no complications - no insulin dumping syndrome, no throwing up or foamies, no strictures. not a single food i can't tolerate, though it doesn't matter because all i crave is super healthy stuff.
some health stats:
Blood pressure - 185/125 down to 115/70
fasting glucose - 125 down to 89
HbA1C - 7.1 down to 4.9
Insulin - 10 down to 4.4
LDL cholesterol - 305 down to 156
HDL cholesterol - 44 to 81
cortisol - 20.5 down to 5.4 (still a bit high... probably stress of losing weight so fast?)
liver ALT/AST - 64/103 down to 20/20
i was a runner for all my life. ran a half-marathon at 265lbs! it was always so hard.... for 20 YEARS! now i go out and i just glide... float. i'm actually mad! like... THIS is what running is supposed to be like?!? actually ENJOYABLE?!? (allow me to reiterate - people are not skinny because they exercise. they exercise because they are skinny.)

JohnnyCakes reacted to playlikeworldchamps in 5 years and it is never too late
Long story but i originally lost 140 lbs in about 2 years overall. Sleeve did 100 of it and lots of cardio etc did the rest.
then gradually weight crept back, very slowly at first, grazing, life happened, stopped the extreme exercise, let carbs back in. So 3 months shy of my 5 year surgiversary I had gained 65 back.
I knew I had to fix this or i’d be right back to 315 in no time.
I used the concepts in “Never Binge Again” book (free on kindle) and also Jason Fungs 2016 Obesity Code starting on Jan 1, 2018.
I am now down 22 lbs and know I can get the rest off.
I never “fixed” my insulin problem. I ate too much Protein. and so when the extreme exercise ended the weight crept back, the protein and “healthy carbs” encouraged the insulin and thus the cravings that the normal exercise couldn’t burn off.
I am back on track. My sleeve is bigger now but still gets fuller than a regular stomach so it hurts if I eat too much. Reduced ghrelin only helped me for 3 months after surgery.
I am thankful to the sleeve for the first 100 lbs but now it’s all on me and the right choices i make.
I recommend those books if you need to get back on track or even if you are in the euphoric losing stages because eventually you will need to make the right choices without all the early benefits of the surgery.
