  1. definitely. just drives me crazy that people in the medical profession dealing with bariatric patients are not only so grossly misinformed, but pass that misinformation onto the patient.

good luck Rucamama. you should be really proud of yourself.
  4. they are, quite simply, wrong. the term "dumping" comes from the fact that insulin is "dumped" into your blood, causing symptoms like shaking/flushing/cramps. the foaming and excess production of saliva and regurgitation of that with food has nothing to do with your insulin levels, it's your body's reaction to having the stomach's stoma blocked.

DO NOT do any diet that you aren't willing to follow the rest of your life. and keto is possibly the most unsustainable diet there is. you are about to get bariatric surgery. the surgery works. just eat a generally healthy, whole-food diet. give up sugar entirely, carbs mostly, and eat normal amounts of healthy fats. or as author Michael Pollen so succinctly put it: "eat FOOD. not too much. mostly plants." or what i came up with: "if it grows in the ground or falls from a tree, grazes on grass or swims in the sea." this surgery is your "do-over" opportunity to live a somewhat normal life. you don't need to do an extreme diet like keto. the OP is in a different boat, having regained. and honestly it's not a long-term strategy for him/her either.

    Haven't told anyone

you'll be able to drive if you stay 2 or 3 nights in the hospital. if you leave the next day, i would say no that's not a good idea. on that second day, tell your nurses/doctor that you aren't ready to leave and you'd like to stay a second night. they should accommodate you. DON'T tell them you are driving yourself home. they will not like that and might not allow it. if they do allow it, they will withhold giving you pain meds that 3rd day before you leave. which will suck because there's still a good deal of pain going on that 3rd day. the vicodin/percocet they gave me was not strong enough to make me unable/unsafe to drive. but you might be different so be careful. get an Uber or something if there's any doubt.

    June 2017 RNY

I had my surgery the day after you. about 6 weeks out. have lost 35lbs. so about 6 per week. i'm also off the blood pressure meds. it has been beyond smooth for me. the worst part was the gas pains the two days after surgery. but since then, zero problems. no nausea, no dumping, i can tolerate everything (all meats, salad greens, other "difficult foods"). it's also amazing how my tastes have changed. i never liked my coffee black before, always needed cream and splenda. now i love it black. my new stomach has an uncanny ability to tell healthy food from unhealthy. i ate a greasy chicken wing last week on an empty stomach. immediately felt full. but if i sit down to salad or beans or grilled vegetables, i can eat quite a lot of it and really enjoy the meal like a normal person. and i've noticed that when i eat a lot of these foods (well, not a lot, but more than the 2oz/meal recommendation, maybe 4-5oz), my weight goes down faster than when i starve myself with shakes. in short, i am very, very happy. the future seems bright.
  9. again, this is NOT DUMPING SYNDROME. i believe this is called the "foamies" and is even less common.

    My story, so far

you lost the "easiest" weight on your own, and then some, before the surgery. if you hadn't done that, your initial post-op loss rate would be much higher. but you did everything right and still losing almost 20lbs/month. you're right on track. if you're struggling to stay under 900cal, i would suggest eating more solid proteins like meat. avoid soups as they clear quickly, leaving you hungry again soon after eating them.

I was only 4 years old...

i think we are a lot alike. from age 18-38 i bounced from 180-280 about six times. i actually figured out that i had lost over 300lbs cumulatively on my own during those 20 years. until the latest upswing took me all the way to 370 - my body broke my thyroid in order to return to being overweight. all the while i was a devoted runner. i ran a sub-2hr half marathon when i was 250lbs. i've always lifted weights, crossfit, P90X, all of it. while doing paleo, intermittent fasting, etc. anyway, rejoice as it seems like all that is a thing of the past. good for you that you're doing this now before you get to where i did. as far as hunger goes, help is on the way. i recently described for someone else what it's felt like for me. hope it helps...

    Anesthesia

yes... go look up the statistics on the safety of modern day anesthesia. you will quickly forget about it altogether. it is, by far, the last thing you should be thinking/worrying about.

    When am I full?

for me, it's not like a "stuffed" feeling like after too much pizza or sushi. it's just a very clear signal saying "that's enough". not painful, quite the opposite - it's a pleasant "i'm content" feeling where you immediately lose interest in eating food and look forward to doing something else. cool stuff. i was kind of worried what it'd be like too but honestly it's liberating. the hunger monster is gone and you can eat on your terms. still enjoy food very much. maybe more since i eat slower now and take the time to really taste food instead of satisfying a hunger. i've also never experienced nausea. nor dumping syndrome. i haven't thrown up even once. (i'm six weeks post op). and only a couple times gotten that backed-up feeling in the esophagus but that goes away within seconds.
  18. my first visit with the office was June 2nd. had surgery June 28th. self pay obviously.

    Opioid Malabsorption

morphine will probably hinder your weight loss efforts LESS than Vicodin/Percocet, because there is no acetametaphin in it. from a study on the LiverTox website: "There have been no convincing cases of idiosyncratic acute, clinically apparent liver injury attributed to morphine. Morphine and other opiates have little hepatic metabolism and they are generally excreted unchanged in the urine, perhaps accounting for their relative lack of hepatotoxicity." the weight gain (or slowing of weight loss) from Vicodin/Percocet comes because the liver has to process all that acetametophin. if your liver is doing that, it can't process your food and your body fat. it slows the whole works down. your liver needs to be at optimal performance for optimal weight loss.

    Soups After Surgery

the problem with soups can be the calories. because soup goes down easy and releases from the pouch to the intestines quickly, you don't fill up very much on them. yet all the calories count. not as big of a deal with broth-based soups, but obviously the ones made with cream can be very high-calorie. when you start transitioning to solid foods, they really want you to eat SOLID FOODS for two reasons - it teaches your new stomach to digest different textures again, and real food stays in your stomach longer giving you the feeling of fullness or satiety for longer. i see this clearly with my own limited experience. if i eat egg and spinach, i am very full for a long time. but i can eat a startling amount of soup, quickly, and be hungry again in an hour. so personally i am going to back off of soups until i hit my goal weight. then add them back in. btw - this does not count drinking broth, which is my favorite thing evarrrr.
