Thank you :) I really enjoyed the last part about "taking the easy way out". I was originally watching it because I had avoided it then thought to myself 'hey I should probably know some of the cons, maybe this one will be informative.' Then surprise! it was all Pros and it made me happy knowing those were a lot of the reasons I had chosen this surgery.

  2. Are you flying in the day of? I'm scheduled the 6th and fly in on the 5th. Perhaps we will cross paths!

    Who was your Mexico Surgeon?

Same surgeon for me. He's got some decent YouTube videos as well. It's like meeting your surgeon before you go down there. I'm from Canada, and after our crappy exchange of .76 it totalled $9300.00 . In my opinion you likely get what you pay for, plus a private clinic in Alberta will cost $19,000 and up so it's still the cheaper option.

    Cooking for One

I cook for one, not a veteran, but I've spent my fair share of time alone, or needed lunches etc. I prep on Sunday typically, after grocery shopping, portion everything into ziploc bags or tiny tupperware, and then organize on a single shelf in the fridge. Even snacks I portion (typically hard boiled eggs, they smell like farts but I love the taste). Its a lot of vegetables, and it is just very easy to grab and go as opposed to a bunch of whole vegetables sitting in my fridge going bad because it was easier to grab something else. Oh! You know what, I've seen some pinterest 'bariatric recipes' that would be great to cook and portion down for one Best of luck!
  5. When I first spoke to my nutritionist I was given a 4 week food plan, the last 2 weeks are 3 protein shakes a day (18g protein, 0.5-1.5g fat depending on the flavor, and <1g sugar) plus dark green vegetables at in between times. I have literally scheduled out my food in order to remember to drink/eat as I get light headed often. I don't want to take the risk of getting super hungry, walking in the door and ruining my liquid diet by stuffing my face with whatever is convenient. At 8am, protein shake and vitamins,10am-snack,12-protein shake,2pm-zucchini (yes the whole thing, uncut), 4pm-shake,6pm-green salad, or I just fill my shake from 4pm that is unfinished with water and call it done for the day..Voila. Its been the only way I can manage to get the recommended amount in. I don't chug any shakes or water because I know after surgery I won't be able too, so I take my time. My first 2 weeks of pre op dieting were Atkins, and I was more strict than I've ever been with anything, which meant about 6 days of intense sugar withdrawal. The first two I barely ate, I was so tired I spent all weekend binge watching netflix on the couch, extremely thankful it was a weekend, and thirsty, holy crap was I thirsty, but every day of that experience was a different adventure I tell ya. Tired, Thirsty, Cravings,Mood swings, crying at romantic comedy movies. Then eventually it was all over.. I've had my days of eating nothing because hunger just never came up. Hence, my food schedule. Sorry if this is not helpful at all, it is just what worked for me. I know there are some members on here who have fantastic advice to give. Plus congratulations on the surgery date!
  6. Eureka!! My most delicious smoothie yet!

I finally took the time to slowly go around the grocery store (and I mean slowly) and look for new things I could incorporate into my protein smoothies to jazz things up. I tend to avoid sugar substitutes if possible, which has eliminated the option of juice squeeze things and most things labeled "sugar-free" anyways, including jello, popsicles, gum etc..  I found some promising new ingredients. I picked up some good finds (in my opinion). I got Matcha green tea powder with ginger, pumpkin pie spice (if your store doesn't have this premade its pretty much cinnamon, ginger, clove, nutmeg.super easy to make), imitation caramel extract, imitation coconut extract, and organic vanilla extract.

So onto my smoothie, it contains the following (as I stare at it lovingly) :

    -1  cup unsweetened cashew milk

    -1 cup water/with a handful of ice

-1 scoop Vitaleph Vanilla protein mix

    -A splash of caramel extract

    -A dash of Vanilla extract

    -Pumpkin Pie Spice

I blended it all together, poured it into a giant cup and am happily drinking so far the best protein smoothie I've had. Also looking forward to tomorrows chocolate protein, espresso, and coconut breakfast smoothie. Fingers crossed it does the trick ;)

    Why is today so tough?!?

That can be tough. Luckily I only have to make one large meal for the week, and my fiance will happily eat a hearty stew for his work lunches like 5 days in a row. As for dinner, I grocery shop for food that is in his wheelhouse to cook. Then he'll cook days worth of it anyways so I only have to deal with the house smelling like delicious food for a little while. He has yet to complain about me no longer cooking dinners, it's one of the ways he knows he has to support me. If I do for some weird reason have to cook dinner for him, I make something I find awful that he would like, ie. Tuna helper, or greasy sausages and penne with marinara sauce. It feels like a chore now, rather than an enjoyable activity where I can taste, season, and sneak bites during cooking..Usually I'm more of a screw it attitude, if he wants to eat he's just going to have to cook.

    SAIL INTO SUMMER CHALLENGE

@Dashofpixiedust8 I would love to join! I barely knew how to navigate the website last week so I missed the first week, but I love the idea of motivation and seeing other members progress as well. If its too late to join because it wouldn't be fair, I completely understand. I have surgery in 1 week and 6 days and any additional inspiration from the start is always welcomed. but just in case it isn't.... Goal Weight:250 Current Weight:278 (nice spreadsheet btw!)

    Blood pressure

I'm curious about this as well, but on the other end of the spectrum perhaps?. My blood pressure usually hovers just at or below 95/60 and my resting heart rate is about 50-55bpm. Sometimes I get light headed easily, particularly standing up quickly from being bent over, and I've noticed it more frequently now that my diet has changed to entirely shakes and almost no carbohydrates. Who was taking you off your bp meds? Have you had any adverse effects?, possibly its a temporary thing, or just a one off of sorts.

    Bowel Problems

Well if you're still on a calorie reduced diet, it's going to take longer to produce enough waste to need to go. As well, and a very important thing to remember is that by using stool softeners or laxatives you're giving all of the muscles and everything that normally does the work to create waste for excretion a 'day off work'. Easily creating a now lazy system that thinks it will continue to do a half-assed (oh yeah I used a pun) job.. There are so many variables, a lot of them come from what is being eaten, if it's enough proper fibre, and water, and medications or vitamins can do it as well. Asses things that may have changed (besides wls) and I strongly suggest trying to fix it naturally rather than with pills or liquids. Don't hold it in when you have to go either. Your body can become so heavily reliant on laxatives it may last your entire life. Prolonged use of laxatives has been linked repeatedly to seizures as well. Try straight prune juice, or consider a squatty potty. I've heard of people using children's bathroom sink stools as well because they are less conspicuous. Physical activity can help too. Just some thoughts. As a person who goes once or twice a week I've unfortunately already done some research on the topic hope it's all worked out

    Skinny Bucket List

Things I will do: -Be confident when my fiance dips me in our house when we dance around, no more yelling 'stop! help! police!' (he's an incredible dancer, took lessons for 13 years) -Not crying out bloody murder when he hugs me and picks me up, in fact... I want to be able to run up to him and jump up into his arms and wrap my legs around him!! -Do Pull-ups (like an impressive amount for a girl) -Bust out like 50 push ups without stopping -Do sit ups for days -Run my dog instead of walking her -Fit in all seats more comfortably -Look in the mirror at the smile I always have on, instead of at my waist to check that my outfit looks okay. -Worry that something might go wrong because I'm 'too small' instead of worrying something will break because 'I'm too fat' -All amusement park rides, without fear that the safety handles will break and I'll go flying out. One last weird one I can think of off the top of my head, I want to walk over ventilation grates on the sidewalk, I currently don't because I worry ones going to be positioned weird and I'll fall through. Also, great idea for a post, kudos

    July Sleevers!!!

If you have to use a fork or knife to eat it, probably don't. If it's liquid, probably go for it. Hope this helps ps - Did they give you a nutritionist?
  15. Offically Day 16 of of pre-op diet. Yesterday started phase 2 which is 3-4 shakes a day plus green leafy veg and sugar free jello. I didn't like pre-made jello to start, not surprisingly it still tastes like someone poured water on a dirty carpet, squeezed it out into a jello mold with food coloring and called it "edible".. So yesterday,  I made it officially 17Hrs on my SUPER exciting selection of either vanilla or chocolate shakes before I said f**k it, I got home from work (still carrying around my half a lunch shake) and ate a miniature handful of trail mix, and a rather large piece of very dark chocolate. Actual chocolate!  For the record, I regret nothing.

(I made my dinner shake at the same time, surprise I went with 'chocolate' flavor, and I use that term loosely, as the shake mix should come with a label that states it is only brown in color, and is not flavored like, nor associated with ACTUAL chocolate. Kind of like a 'no real chocolate was harmed in the making of this bubbely swill we call a shake'.  17 hrs before I was tired of them plain. Its time to start getting creative with my recipes, sweet :)  Hmmm no wonder you lose weight, the food is awful hahaha

I googled and pinterested(<--that's not a real word) recipes for Bariatric patients Post Op, and good lord there are some incredible looking things on there. I will note though that to replace grains there's a strong emphasis on just using cheese instead. I'm not a nutritionist or anything but I've flipped over a package of cheese once or twice in my life and happen to know that it is high as a kite in fat. Then again when you're making food porn, obviously more cheese looks better. Anyways, its Thursday and I need to go make cheques (<--btw the spell check for this is "squelches",wonderful..

Moving that scale down one day at a time.

The thing with cheese is, like all things, healthy in moderation. Not processed cheese, that's junk regardless. But block cheese and string cheese.. not only is it low carb, but it's also rife with good and bat fats, in the sense of how they contribute to cholesterol in your body. I wouldn't know regarding specialized cheeses (feta, gouda, gruyere, etc.) as I hate the taste of all those.

Regarding the pre-op, it's essential to keep your carbs to a minimum, the point of the pre-op diet is to shrink your liver and make the surgery safer. The larger it is, the slipperier it is, and/or the more damaged it is, the more risky the surgery.

    2. PatientEleventyBillion

      PatientEleventyBillion

Also, weight loss tends to coincide with a low carb diet (metabolic mechanisms are the same between ketosis, weight loss, and liver shrinking).. so if you're doing it right you should be losing weight on the pre-op diet.

I wouldn't touch processed cheese, the chef in me refuses. The cheese was extra old cheddar and if I ate more than 28.4grams I'd be shocked. It was even a stevia sweetened chocolate bar, less sugar than my shake. I havn't touched a piece of bread, pasta, rice, pastries, sauces with added sugar, alcohol, and I don't drink pop and have never drank juice that wasn't fresh carrot. Jeez I havn't even touched carrots, peas, potatoes, green beans, fruit, legumes, milk, honey, or salad dressing. Every time I step on that scale it't gone down. I'm doing something right.;)

The odd thing for me was that I ate peanuts, those are the cockroach of nuts, that I'd normally never touch.

I stay HORNY all the time!

It has made my day to read this I swear, that comic is amazing. I didn't realize this topic was in the mens discussion room. Holy fkn funny.I'm not sure if this happens to women, but if it does I don't know how I could actually be hornier. I'm 30 so I'm already in my sexual prime. If the situation was backwards, I sure wouldn't change my partner if he couldn't keep up, I'd just make him watch ahaha ok ok back to work, somehow supposed to concentrate..
  17. Google Bariatric recipes and check out pinterest, they have fantastic ideas. I even found a recipe card for different types of smoothies if you're post op and allowed to have fruit. Other than that, consider going to a book store and getting a bariatric cook book, or using google. Simple solutions, I'd probably still start with 'soft' meat and vegetables. It does seem odd that your surgeon would say to move to solid food so fast, or was it a family doctor?
  18. I check my own ticker to remind myself how close my surgery is, because it seems sort of surreal, especially how fast time is going...Is that weird?

Thank you! Tomorrow is my first day of protein shakes all day and night hahah
I imagine with my chef background I'm going to get bored fast and start getting creative with them.
just sayin'...I'd drink a chocolate zucchini smoothie.Chocolate cinnamon smoothie. I would even heat it up and make mexican hot chocolate with it. Ok I'm off to write my full meal plan for the next 14 days! It'll be easier with it written down. I'll make a calendar, tear off the day ahead of me when I wake up, and not think twice about other temptations. (my apologies, I'm essentially thinking out loud right now..)

    Cruise 4 months after surgery

I'm curious for the replies also. I have surgery in July and in January I'm going to a 5 star All Inclusive Mexico resort for my wedding. Same thing I didn't know about the surgery when we decided. However it was where I met my fiancé so the destination picked itself. Normally I would be up for partying all day long in the pools, and enjoying the delicious food..I've taken a different mindset because there's no other way to do it, and I'm going to make my vacation all about looking fantastic in awesome new outfits and picking alcohol more carefully. I'll also need about as much willpower as possible to stay away from cold beer and tequila, my vacation favorites. I've just got my fingers crossed that habit will have set in by then and I'll be okay without the normal binging that comes with vacation. Plus I gain about 10lbs every vacation I go on, so I won't have to deal with that this time

    July Sleevers!!!

Extended diet + 2 week pre-op..pdf It just occurred to me that I could probably share my pre-op diet in an easier format, rather than trying to type the whole freakin thing out. Current status - Kind of hungry Surgery July 6th, my "14 Day Pre Op Diet" starts after tomorrow, should be a piece of cake..mmm cake haha
  22. I'm grateful for two things that I was reminded of last night. The first one is that I have this 4 week pre op diet to prepare for whats next, because it caused me to stop and think about why I eat in the patterns I do, and to try and change it. For example, I was standing in the kitchen having coffee with my fiance last weekend and told him (it was about noon) that because I know we have cookies in one cupboard, normally I would have had cookies with my coffee, and then perhaps another coffee so I could have more cookies.. Not that I need them, but just because they are there and I know that. I said normally the cheezies in the other cupboard I would have had as a mid day snack simply because they are there and its a treat. In neither of those situations would I have been hungry and eating to satiate myself. I would consider myself a "convenient grazer", I wouldn't go into the kitchen to cook for one person, but if there was crackers and cheese I'd eat it, just 'cause. If there was chips, cookies, crackers, beef jerky etc, I'd eat them because I have an addiction (the realization of that is my second epiphany for the week, continuing on....). He is so very helpful. Even apologizes when we hosted fathers day dinner because I had so few options, and went as far as to offer to steam me some vegetables so I had more to eat. I politely declined, because I am getting better and better at saying no to food.

The minute I was given a surgery date and put on Atkins, I started eating like I had just had surgery. Small plates, small portions, the effort to cook vegetables for myself, staying out of the kitchen, drinking a lot of water. I've tried very hard to stay in the mindset that this is real, there is no turning back, and I will absolutely be successful for the rest of my life. Being forced to go on a diet pre op has opened my eyes to how much time I spent eating, and why, and a realistic understanding of how much I was eating. When its a day of grazing, plus one meal (that I got very bad at eating close to bed time) it no wonder to me how I got to be this big.  I got all of my ducks in a row when it came to organizing the procedure, now I just need to make sure I stay on track. In 3 days I go from Atkins to 3 Vitaleph shakes a day (plus leafy green and SF popsicles/SF jello.. blech for aspartame) and my supplements. Its becoming very real and my nervousness is melting away, while my excitement grows stronger. Goodbye self-doubting Raquel, hello confident beautiful dedicated Raquel.

I think once he got over the shock of my request for his support in my decision, he has been amazingly supportive. He double checks if its ok that he opens our favorite chips while I'm around and doesn't eat them right in front of me. Offered to cook me vegetables last night when there wasn't many options at the group dinner, he makes sure I grab some lettuce before it gets dowsed in dressing for everyone else. Food wise he's been very helpful. He has mentioned that he'll miss getting to do things like eat a pizza together while we play video games, or how he'll miss having dinner at all-you-can-eat sushi with me, but honestly I'll miss those as well for a while, then it'll adjust for both of us. A few days ago he told me he was proud of me for doing "all of this", I thought that was a super sweet thing to say. He's also like 90lbs lighter than me and quite active (always has been his whole life) so there won't be any animosity about him now being 'the fat one' or anything bizarre like that. Other than that he did make sure I wasn't going to get all hot and then leave him hehee. Great support on the home front, which is so important in my opinion.

I'm glad to read these results as well. I say this because you aren't going through the Alberta WMP. In there, they make sure to have interviews separate from your SO to ensure you don't have any barriers to success that might include your SO. From the sounds of it, he's very supportive, which is fantastic. My wife was very skeptical at first, but that was maybe a few weeks until she went with me to my appointments and saw that this is no joke. Since then she's been extremely helpful, cooking anything she can, catering extensively to my diet, and being that she suffers PCOS and gained a lot of weight post-daughter, she's used my success and has made significant changes herself resulting in losing 20-30 pounds in less than a month. She does even more than I do, she tracks every day on MFP, and is religious about protein. It's even better if you both are in a great and healthy lifestyle, and for us it translates to our daughter as we seriously moderate her junk food intake.

  23. Its early so I may not be as eloquently written as usual, please excuse the following, and how long it is. This is from last nights, first nights eating out with a group: I've been pre-op dieting for a week exactly now. Its been relatively easy as it's Atkins and I happen to love meat and vegetables (Its just easier to open chips and beer so now I'm here..) Originally we were going to go to the Keg, perfect, I knew ahead of time and went online and planned my meal out. Wild card, we show up at The Keg and its practically overflowing so we have to now go to a different restaurant nearby. Crap, okay time to use what I've learned and know and find something I can have, "I got this" I think to myself confidently. Our waitress comes around and I order the house salad with a grilled chicken breast AND grilled shrimp skewers as well, no sauces. Success. Okay so here's my conundrum, I'm with 6 people who don't know about my surgery, they are my fiances family and (potentially?) judgmental. Immediately after I order, The first words out of his mother mouth to him are "Oh so I start my diet next week, blah blah (Its this weird diet where literally you eat like an exact food plan repeatedly week after week, one day actually contains 2 hot dog weiners for lunch)..okay back on topic. I flag her, and put her in the mental "Dont Tell" file. I eat, happily satisfied with my food. Later were discussing some topic unrelated to food entirely, I happen to be the one who has just finished saying something and I hear from the other end of the table "well then you wouldn't have to go on a diet", not a passing comment, but actually snarky! I use every ounce of my remaining energy not to sass his ass speechless. Luckily hes just their friend and not actually a future relative. His wife however, I notice orders a huge meal, eats 7 small bites, then scrapes the sauce off her chicken, and boxes that up along with only the remaining steamed vegetables. Leaving over half the meal to be thrown away. Her husband however goes immediately on my "NEVER tell" list. Question (FINALLY) What are others experiences with eating out when people don't know. Is it better to order what you actually want and can have, and finish it, or order a full sized meal, play with it hoping nobody notices you only ate 1-2 items, then take home the remaining food. If you've done both of those, when have you noticed people ask/comment less on what you've ordered? Please, I actually would really appreciate some input on this whole eating out thing..Oder small and eat it all? Fake it with a full meal and toss it when you get around the corner?
  24. Thank you I appreciate you saying that

    Gastric sleeve time off work

You're right, she won't last 2 hours..she's going to last 8! I have surgery Thursday and back to work Monday. Every case is different, job, movement, empathy from employers etc. I'm also in a situation where if I don't work I don't get paid. There are no replacements for my position that can "take over" while I'm gone either. My mortgage isn't going to pay itself. I won't feel guilty if I make it home and spend all night on the couch/bed, but work has to be done or I wont have a couch/bed to heal in, feel me?
