  1. Oh god the protein breath. I chew gum and just make sure not to swallow it. Protein breath might be worse than coffee breath!
  2. You can have clear protein drinks. I have a powder that mixes with water and tastes much better than the isopure clear or bottled clear protein. Tuesday and today are clear liquids and in supposed to drink 3. Maaaay have cheated with wine as a clear liquid but not today cause anesthesia and all that
  3. You CANNOT take NSAIDS. I take mobic and I’m off it for preop safety and have to stay off for at least 6 months then we’ll try it and if it doesn’t help my pain or I get ulcer symptoms I’m done. You can take Tylenol just track your total daily intake for liver toxicity. Personally, I find Tylenol to be useless.

    Hair loss

Mine started with the sleeve after several months. My brush fills every couple days and clumps come out in the shower. I’m a year and a half post op but I’ve had complications so I’m a little malnourished plus I have autoimmune disease that causes hair loss. Just adding those facts so you don’t think the hair loss has to last as long as mine. Hair has thinned but luckily no bald spots *crosses fingers*

    No support system

I have 0 support. Friends out of state have my back but no one here. I’m taking an Uber to the hospital, my brother in law is kindly picking me up and my mom refuses to bring an overnight bag for me since I can’t bring it to check in. She’s made it clear she does not support my bypass revision even though it could save my life long-term (cancer, aspiration pneumonia). Surgery is Thursday and I’ve left the anxious stage after doing a thorough bedroom cleaning and now I’m just depressed knowing the mom I supported through my sister’s death (32 and I moved in with her so she isn’t alone) and she makes me completely alone when I’m most vulnerable. Sadly, I depend on these forums for support.

9 days post-op yogurt and peanut butter???

That’s so unbelievably irresponsible! I had the same issues after my shoulder surgery. My surgeon’s residents failed to page her when they should have. I almost filed a complaint but it worked out. Protein wise there are so many options. Progenix is really good but pricey. Cookies and cream is like ice cream. Sometimes I even freeze it and eat with a spoon. Get some unflavored to add to soft foods you eat and I just got 2 protein powders that dissolve clear but no report back on taste. Don’t give up. I like premier but also like making shakes with better tasting powders. I add it to protein milk for an extra boost.

    Question about sodium

Is that the one that comes in jars and it’s basically concentrated cubes? I got some for my sleeve but moved onto the next phase before trying them. I’ve heard they’re great.

    Gerd

I’ve had several endoscopies since my sleeve August 2017. Maybe 3? I’m actually lucky my esophagus has no cellular changes yet. Key word, YET. Also had barium swallow, sham feeding test, esophageal manometry, bravo pH study that showed severe reflux, a contrast abdominal and pelvic CT, and a gastric emptying test that showed gastroparesis. My surgeon was still a doodie head so I switched hospitals. He says 90% cure and if I’m in that 10% I might punch a wall. Year and a half on Prilosec, and 4 months high dose steroids made me lose a dental implant I had already paid $4,000 for and now reconstructive surgery is probably $10-15k. YAY REFLUX!

    Gerd

Thank you! Surgery is Thursday! Eek! I’m hoping for my bday I can have a nibble of one of those birthday cake flavored protein cakes. I think I’ll be in the soft food phase so maybe I’ll have to sing to myself then smoosh it up. 😂

    April 2019 Surgeries!

I don’t know how people do the several week liquid diet. I have a sleeve so don’t get too hungry but Tuesday and today are clear liquids only for surgery Thursday. I’ve cheated with chewing gum. Not eating feels weird even though I basically can’t eat! The mind is such a silly thing.

    Question about sodium

Add some salt to any soft foods you can eat. If you’re still in the liquid phase I’d just wait it out. I couldn’t handle broth after my sleeve. The hospital broth was good but everything I bought was disgusting. Friend sent me a link to a bone broth she loves that comes frozen from places like Ralphs and Whole Foods. I’m going to try it for my bypass.

    Gerd

I’ll send you my birthday vibes! Your appt is my 33rd bday and I can’t celebrate with food or cake since I’ll be on liquids and can’t have processed sugar so all my bday vibes are going your way for approval! My second doctor had me approved within 24 hours.

    Gerd

I was blamed for my GERD. He even wrote I should be examined for Münchausen syndrome even though I show no symptoms and my psychiatrist said not a chance. He also said I have GERD because I’m bipolar. Huh?! I fired him and went to Cedars for my RNY I’m having on Thursday. I’m actually filing a formal complaint with UCLA. Accusing me of such a major mental illness. He didnt order a psych eval or anything. Absolutely disgusting and unethical. Now I have to submit a request to have it removed from my EMR.

    Multivitamins?

Not according to my dietician. This has everything. They don’t taste as good as the bariatric ones from vitamin shoppe but the fewer pills the better!

    April 2019 Surgeries!

Getting nervous for my Thursday surgery. I guess his scheduler has been calling me cause there’s a Monday cancellation but my box was full so I got it after hours today, Friday. It’s okay. I have one dessert spot I need a small bite from and otherwise I’d be on my 2 day liquid diet all weekend. Not prepared for Monday! I don’t even know how I’ll be ready for Thursday. It came up so quickly!!

    Any regrets with RNY?

I regretted my sleeve for probably the first month. I’m getting bypass Thursday and it scares me but the longitudinal studies show good results. I’m getting it for severe GERD. I just worry my issues swallowing could get worse. We’ll see!

    Multivitamins?

I’m switching to bariatric fusion complete. $25 a month, 4 chewables a day that you can take 2 at a time. It’s all I’ll have to take. No additional pills except maybe iron since I’m not absorbing it and my b12 shots that I’ve been doing for a few years. I figure $25 a month for almost all my vitamins isn’t bad.

    Sleeve to Bypass

My dietician had me buy a bariatric vitamin where it’s about $25 a month for 120 pills. You take 4 a day but can take 2 at a time. It contains everything. I just need to do my b12 shots since I don’t absorb it. I can’t do 5 different vitamins. I am also bipolar and on so many meds. They said I have to crush everything but it will be so much to eat every night. Not sure how I’ll do it.
  19. Nervous! This time next week I’ll either be passed out on drugs or wide awake and pissed I can’t sleep. As long as the GERD stops I can take anything surgery throws at me. I think.

    Gerd

After a year and a half with severe GERD, including aspirating some vomit into my lungs while I sleep I’m getting converted in a week. I got approved in less than a day. I did switch surgeons. My original one is a POS and basically wants me to keep suffering. Sorry, I won’t risk a slow death from aspiration pneumonia!

    Drinking alcohol again????

Bubbles don’t bother me at all. I’m getting sleeve to bypass and I expect bubbles to bother me a bit more. I hope not!
  22. KateBruin

    Any regrets with RNY?

I’m preparing for a sleeve to bypass revision due to GERD next Thursday. That aside, I believe stats show that bypass and sleeve patients lose the same average % of excess weight but bypass patients lose it faster. I liked sleeve because it was less intrusive but it clearly didn’t work for me.
  23. I got my period the day before sleeve and have it now 2 weeks before bypass. I’m on continuous birth control and don’t get periods. It just shows how stressed I must feel.

    Lifting weight/working out

Ask your doctor. You have to be careful what you lift. I had to lift my 25 lbs dog the night I got home from sleeve. Lift from the legs not the core. Got through sleeve with no hernia.
  25. I love topical NSAID. I use it on my knees and shoulders. It actually does help.
