    Mushy Ideas....

Greek yogurt has up to 21g of Protein in it, so always a good way to get in the protein. I did instant mashed potatoes with the unflavored Unjury Protein powder. There are a lot of foods that you can add that to so you don't get bored. Also, egg salad is one my nutritionist recommended. Good luck!

    Flipped port.....

My port flipped as well. I still don't have a reason as to why, but I did have it fixed this past July. It was WAY easier than the first surgery. Just a few days and I was doing what I wanted minus lifting and too much bending. I wish you luck with everything and keep your hope strong. I started to lose hope and went into a downward spiral and gained some weight back so try to stay positive!
  3. I had the same problem. My initial surgery I had 4 itchy rashes around my incisions. I thought that it was the steri-strip adhesive. So, this time when I had my port revision, he just used the glue and no strips and I still had the itchy rash! No fun!
  4. I wasn't hungry at all, but I made myself drink the protein shakes as it is important to get the right amount of protein in there, so just keep trying to get it in as much as you can!
  5. I like to think that I have a high pain tolerance. The first 4 days were really bad for me, I couldn't get out of bed without assistance and was in a lot of pain moving. After about a week I was doing better, but I think that taking the 3 weeks off, I was able to rest as much as I needed to and not push it at my job. With my port revision, it was a mere 2 days and I was fine. I also wonder if it depends on how much they have to move things around, I'm pretty sure my liver was very fatty and might have impeded things.

    dating was always difficult, but...

I'm there with ya, sistah. I can't say that anyone has every told me that guys don't ask out fat girls...HOWEVER, I have gotten the, you have such a pretty face, just lose the weight and you'll find a man. OR, my gyn told me that another 20 lbs and the guys will be after me. So, basically they are implying that I am not good enough now. I notice that I don't talk to guys or email guys on dating sites that are too cute because I think they won't be interested because I'm fat. In a lot of cases, this is the case, but in others I might have missed an opportunity. It is sad that people feel the need to express their rude opinions. Over all of the years of being overweight my self esteem has been beaten down. Guys saying rude things. I don't get why they need to comment. Dating can be fun when you find a guy who likes you for you, but those guys are hard to find!
  7. The port site does seem to be dented a bit for a while. Didn't your doc tell you that you should be getting 70gms of protein a day? You should be drinking mostly protein shakes or things with protein powder in them, otherwise you won't have much energy and will start feeling bad. Check with your doc on this!

    almost everything gets stuck!!!

Make sure that what you are eating is moist...dry foods such as bread and dry meats often get stuck. So, maybe try sticking with moister foods and see how they go down. Good luck!
  9. I think that the teenage years are the hardest when you are overweight. Teenagers have no mercy! I guess that kids are so insecure about themselves they need to find things in other people to criticize!
  10. I haven't had good restriction since I'd say January due to port issues. So, got my fill yesterday and I'm on liquids for a few days. Just started drinking my morning shake and took my pills with it. Only had about 1/4 cup of it and then it all came up! Guess I've got some good restriction going on! I need to get back into the mindset of drinking slowly again and probably cut my pills a little smaller!

Help I've fallen and I can't get up!

I guess that it boils down to the fact that even though the band helps us with our weight loss, our brains have to catch up. I still sometimes feel like I go into my old eat without thinking mode...this usually ends up in PBing! Good luck to you and I hope that you get back on track!

    Ready to re-start the process

Yeah, I pretty much gave up for a while and didn't want to be on here seeing how great other people were doing, although it might have kicked my butt into gear! I am happy that my attitude has changed and I am back on and ready to go!!
  13. So, after about six months of little or no progress, a flipped port, a port revision, and my first fill post-op, I am finally regaining some hope that I had lost! When I first had my Lap Band put in, I did very well and then it stalled and I haven't lost anything in months. I'm not going to lie, I wasn't following a strict diet and part of that was due to depression about the band not working, so I do admit my part in this. However, I got my fill today and am back on track! The doc even said that he would give me another 6 months of free fills since I am self pay since he said that it was his fault that I couldn't get the fills. I am very excited to get back on track and bring my blood pressure and sugar levels back down again!

    Ready to re-start the process

Thank you! I'm drinking my liquids and hoping that I have some good restriction!
  15. To make a long story short, I had my band put in October 13, 2008. My first two fills were okay, but then it became increasingly hard for the doc to find my port. We then started doing fills under xray. I never really had full restriction at any point. Then, it got to the point where he was struggling to access the port even under xray and the surgeon stated that my port had flipped. I had had no pain or anything to indicate that this had happened. I asked my doc what the cause could have been. He said he couldn't know for sure. I had been given the green light for Pilates, but I think that this might have been the cause as there is a lot of abdominal work during it. Mid July I had my port re-attached. It was an easy surgery, just minimal localized pain for a few days, then back to work in 2 days. I saw the surgeon a few days ago and he said that I'm okay to get back to working out and that I can get a fill in 2 weeks. I can't wait to get this thing working properly! I want some restriction so all of this will have been worth it!

    What about Alcohol???

I drink occasionally post Lap Band. I just make sure that I don't drink a lot and that I don't drink anything that is carbonated.
  17. I went to Florida last weekend and we were a little late for the flight because the lines were so long. I bought something to eat before I got on the plane. I thought that I was eating slowly enough, then they called us for the flight and I threw the rest of the food away. I get in line, and get that lovely pain in my chest from being stuck. I get through the line, but then there is another line in the hall to get into the plane. At this point I am sweating and in a ton of pain. So, I ended up having to push past about 20 people to get to the lavatory, had to tell the flight attendant that I needed to vomit and ran in there! When I came out I felt like a fool and the flight attendant asked me if I was OK to fly. Let's just say I learned my lesson!
  18. I haven't been in a good place with my band for a few months now, ever since I started having to have my fills under xray because he couldn't access the port in the office. My doc told me during the last fill that my port had flipped. It was almost a relief because I've been spiraling out of control in terms of my eating because I was so depressed about my band not working. So, I set up the date for my revision surgery, but now I am worried. Did I do something that caused it to flip? The doc said that it wasn't the pilates and hard work outs that I do, but I have felt pain while working out and am worried that this is what caused the flip. The doc told me that it wasn't, so do I make any changes when I have the surgery? Or just keep working out as usual?

    Allergic reaction???

I didn't get hives, but I started itching all over for a few days. My primary care gave me a med for the itching and it went away after 2 days. No one seemed to think I was allergic to the band, but I wonder because I am allergic to adhesive tape and other weird things!

My port is hard to get into for a fill

I don't have the Realize band, but my doc has had the same problem! He ended up having to do the last 2 fills under xray, which I had to pay $450 for! This past time, he told me that it seems as though my port has detached and I have to have another surgery to fix it. Not what I wanted to hear, but it will be nice to not be a pin cushion every time I go to his office. Good luck to you!

    Captive audience

My doc gave me a big lecture last time I was in because I was eating carbs. I told him that I was trying a diet that my trainer recommended because I had no restriction and needed to do something. Although he was willing to give me a fill, he made me feel like crap and that made me want to eat more! As y'all said, if we could do it without restriction, wouldn't we all be skinny on our own? Don't let yourself feel bad! And maybe give them a call and ask if you can get more of a fill for free since she clearly didn't do a good job!
  22. So, I've been having to get my fills at the hospital under fluoro for $450 a pop because the doc hasn't been able to access the port in the office. Today I went to have this done and he was having a hard time getting to it. He did the fill, but says that the port has totally detached and it can flip around. He says that I need to have surgery to re-attach the port. I asked him what the cause for this could be and he didn't give me a good answer. I asked if it could be from working out, he said, possibly. I work out a lot and do pilates, all of which I was approved to do. What causes the port to flip? Since I am self pay, I am going to have to pay for the surgery out of pocket, any estimates on how much this might cost. How extensive is the surgery? Do they usually reattach the port in the same place? I'm sure the doc will answer some of these questions when I meet with him before the surgery, but now I'm worrying about it!

Fill Doctor in the Baltimore Area

Dr. Averbach and Dr. Singh do lap band surgeries through St. Agnes. Good luck!
  24. My doc told me that he wants me to learn how to eat with the band and get used to it and we can go from there. It wasn't an outright no, but he didn't seem to like the idea very much.
  25. I had my surgery in October. I was self pay and I thought that the money that I spent would be more than worth it. I never expected that this journey would be easy (OK, deep down I hoped it would, but knew it wouldn't be). I lost 35 pounds and then wasn't feeling much restriction. So, I went for another fill. The doctor couldn't find the port after poking me about 20 times. SO, I got it done under xray (for $450). About a week after the fill I had no restriction. I went back to the doc today to get my free in office fill. He couldn't find the port again, even now that he knows that my port is a little tilted and moves when he injects it. I feel totally hopeless right now. I got a lecture about how I need to only eat protein and hardly any carbs so I can feel full and how I need to do this on my own until he can get me into the hospital to do the fill. I am fully aware of the fact that I need to work to make the Lap Band work, but I feel like I am up the creek with no paddle. I have started eating more because I am depressed that I have gone through all of this and spent all of this money and it isn't working the way that I want it to. I could be at this point had I just dieted on my own. I know that I need to be patient and wait for my fill, but what do I do in the meantime? I work out a lot, so that isn't an issue, it is all about the eating and I am hungry all of the time, only worsened by the fact that I'm depressed because I keep eating!! I know, bad cycle. So, I called my nutritionist to make an appointment. I am also going to go to a support group even though I always talk myself out of them because I feel like a failure and don't want to listen to people who are doing everything the right way! Okay, I feel a little better now that I have vented. Thank you for listening!
