  1. Hi guys 👋👋👋👋

It's been over a year since we've had our surgery🎉🎉🎉 hows everyone doing?

I am 2lbs away from my goal weight but been plateau'd since July!!!! Very frustrating!! On a more positive note I have spoken to my nutritionist who has advised I've lost 92% of my excess weight which is way better than they expected.

This is the best decision I have ever made! Feeling so blessed

  2. Hi Guys

Ive been searching for a thread with information on this and have found bits and bobs but I thought let's start a communal thread with as much information as possible regarding pregnancy following gastric bypass.

I am 14 months post op and 6 weeks pregnant 🎉🎉

I spoke to my nutritionist who has advised:

Exchange my regular Multivitamin for pregnacare
5mg of folic acid instead of the recommended 400mcg
3-4 portions of Calcium a day (milk, yoghurt, cheese)

I would be getting a pregnancy letter from her next week so will post more information once I receive that.

    My midwife has advised:

I should aim on gaining a max of 14lbs over the pregnancy
I will need additional scans to check baby's growth

I'll update with my progress and other information I gather.

Would love to hear from you regarding your experience, what your nutritionist or surgeon recommended and any other fun facts 😁🖤

  3. Don't beat yourself up about it. I can't tell you how many "last suppers" I had before starting my pre-op liquid diet. I spent the two weeks before eating every last piece of junk that I could get my hands on. By the time I had to start the liquid diet, I was kind of ready to take a break from food for awhile.

Now, don't get me wrong, I'm not recommending you do this at all. If you can abstain now that will be much better for you in the long run. But if you can't do it now, it doesn't mean you're not taking it seriously or that you won't be able to stick with it for you surgery. I handled my liquid diet like a champ and didn't cheat once. Part of the reason I binged was because I knew it would be the last time. It was my goodbye to my old self and lifestyle.

You can do it! Don't let your brain tell you you can't!

Your so kind. Thank you for the support. I'm glad I'm not alone

  4. Since you are at the beginning of this process, I would recommend three things.

    1. Take a good before photograph of yourself, so that you have something to compare to after surgery. Many times we are blind to our obesity. We do not see ourselves. Therefore when the weight begins to drop off rather dramatically, we question if this is really happening. Photographs are a good visualization of our success. Many people carry a before and after photo with them, just to remind themselves of their success.
    2. Walk 30 minutes each day, every day until surgery (or equivalent exercise). Walking helps the recovery process go smoothly and minimized the pain levels from surgery.
    3. Wean yourself from caffeine and carbonated beverages now. After I gave up my 6 diet coke a day habit, I suffered from a week of severe withdrawal syndrome consisting of severe headaches and body aches. I was miserable. You don't want to combine the effects of caffeine withdrawal with the effects of surgery.

Thank you!! That is really good advice.

  5. Hi Guys, I'm scheduled for my surgery on September 15th. Ever since I got my surgery date I've been pounding food whatever I can get my hands on. This is super upsetting because I know it can mess up my chances of having the surgery and it will only make it harder for me once I can't eat food anymore.

Furthermore I'm abroad for my sisters wedding until 5th September and I'm going to need to start my pre op diet on the 1st September.

I'm just worried I'm not taking it seriously enough and need a kick up the butt to get back on track.

Would really appreciate the support or to hear if anyone else went through this and tips on how you got through it.

  6. I had RNY gastric bypass because I had severe acid reflux (GERD) prior to surgery and the sleeve will only make this condition worse. RNY has been around for several decades and is almost the gold standard in weight loss surgery. They have most of the bugs worked out. Also I did not want to undergo surgery a second time. Once is enough for me. The rate of revision surgery is extremely low for this type of operation.

    Hi James
This is one of my key reasons for changing to the bypass, my surgeon was very pro RNY and mentioned it is the gold standard and more research on it. I'm fortunate not to have acid reflux so there's no pro in that term however I agree I want surgery as a one time thing.
    Thanks for your help [emoji3]

  7. Ooops. I was typing away and realized that you posted this on the bypass forum. Hope you don't mind a response from a sleever.....
My doctor brought me in for my last appointment about a week before my surgery date and that was when I had to make my final decision on what surgery I was choosing. Up until then, the approvals and diet and prep were the same for both surgeries, so he said he didnt need to know until then - I think it only matters to them as they plan out the surgery schedule for the day. - so don't feel pressured if you change your mind a few times.
they are both good surgeries. each has pros and cons. the trick is to pick the one that matches you. Here are some factors to take into account.... reflux, diabetes, how much you need to lose. malabsorption, and complication rates.
If you follow the averages, RNY has greater and quicker weight loss rate..but be careful with those stats. So many people don't make lasting changes and they screw up the averages. By the 2 year mark, for people who are making lifestyle changes and really using WLS as a tool and not relying on it to do all the work, the percentages are the same.
    Good luck in September [emoji4]

    Hi Deeveg
Thank you so much for your reply, really appreciate the information. I am constantly going back and forth so hoping to make a solid choice and be happy with it.
I understand this is a tool and I need to make lifelong lifestyle changes.
    Really excited for this opportunity
Hope your surgery goes well and you recover easily [emoji3]

  8. Hello Ellie

My name is Leanne I am 45 from the U.k also I'm from Essex and having my op on the NHS in St Marys hospital London my date is to be confirmed my whole time span will be 1 and a half years in all but that was because I had to have further tests for other things they found alone the way i.e. sleep apnea and had tests because they thought I had cancer.Any questions you have get back to me.Are your family friends being supportive of you?

    Hi
Yes they are very supportive how about yours?

  9. My bat wings are probably the most noticeable but tbh the health benefits far far outweigh the physical appearance. I would choose saggy skin over dying prematurely every time. Try to concentrate on your health and wellbeing being positives and not on the negatives of maybe having the non perfect appearance. I found that swimming tones for me as pressure on the joints is minimal [emoji846]

    Hi Donna
I totally agree. Just wondering people's experience, will definitely look into swimming thanks

  10. Hi guys, I'm in the UK and was wondering if anyone can share there experience I was referred for bariatric surgery on a NHS research trial and have been given a date in June for my group seminar and then 3 days later am having a appointment with a 'consultant general surgeon' I was wondering how long after your first surgeon appointment did you have the actual surgery?

    Thanks in advance
