I'm excited and a bit nervous. I have my PCP pre-op appt this morning. I then have Pulmonologist on 4/18 & Cardiologist on 4/20. Then I return to PCP on 4/26 for final medical clearance. I'm worried the PCP won't be able to get that final medical clearance to my surgeon's office by 4/27 (when they need it). It took her 3 weeks to get them the medical necessity letter. I wish my PCP could do all the clearances herself. All this running around only adds to the nerves.

I know the feeling. I had to get clearance from the pulmonologist and cardiologist also. I went to a bariatric clinic in another town. And did my test at my home hospital. Which I had medical transportation to take me to my appointment. But I got one medical supervised meeting and that would conclude the six months required by my insurance. I been at this since September and November starting 6 months supervised weight loss meetings.

I was comfortable with my decision to do the gastric sleeve surgery. During all of my required tests and procedures, I am finding a lot of things wrong with me. One thing that came up was a "female issue" which I needed to go in and have an out patient procedure done this past Friday. Because of my sleep apnea, they decided to use a breathing tube, even though it was just a 30-45 minute procedure. Well apparently at some point I stopped breathing and they couldn't wake me from the anesthesia for about 2 hours. Has anyone had this experience and then were ok for a major surgery? I am so scared to go under anesthesia again, and I still have at least 3 more minor procedures that I need to be put under for. If i continue to have these problems, could I be rejected for the surgery? I am glad I am finding all of these things, but I am so tired of getting bad news around every corner. Then to get through all of this and be told I am too much of a risk will really put me over the edge. I know they need to do what is best for my health (and life), but I won't know what to do if I can't get this help. I have lost almost 30 pounds on my own so far, but I don't know how much more I can do on my own due to physical constraints.

I pray no one else goes through this, but if there is anyone that can provide some advice on how you handled these issues it would be appreciated.

Wow, Debbie that is scary I know sleep apnea is no joke. I pray all goes well.

    Hey all!

So I'm a 31 year old, newly divorced, Mom of an amazing 2 year old boy. I'm a year post op VSG, down 102 pounds and only 9 pounds from goal. My ex also had VSG at the same time I did, lost a significant amount of weight and began an affair with a co-worker.

I'm finding it to be difficult to adjust to life, not only adjusting to life in my new body but now also single. The prospect of dating is more than slightly terrifying. It can get lonely at times, not only dealing with the emotional part of WLS but also now starting over.

Anyone else going through a rough time also?

    Hi everyone,

I've had consults with 2 different plastic surgeons and one surgeon won't do a TT/BL at the same time as it's 'too much t do at once' and the other will.

The only 2 ops I've ever had are my bypass last year and gallbladder removal last week. I healed well after each operation, but struggled emotionally coming out of the anaesthetic. I hate the feeling! This makes me think it would be wise to do it in one operation....along with reducing the overall cost and recovery time. On the other hand, I'm worried the recovery will be too painful & I won't have a carer at my beck and call.

I felt a better vibe/connection with the surgeon who wants to perform them separately. Should this be the deciding factor? So confused.

Any hints that will help me decide? (BTW- I've gone from 250 to 150).

    Thanks in advance!

Girl, congrats on the 100 pounds.

Some patients need to jump through hoops to get weight loss surgery. You are especially bound to the requirements if you are hoping for reimbursement from your health insurance plan or if your chosen surgeon has strict requirements. A long weight loss diet or liquid diet are some of the better known requirements, and others include a sleep study, cardio testing, lab testing, and psychiatric evaluations. The purpose is to make sure you are dedicated to weight loss surgery success and properly prepared for it.

However, these requirements are not just annoying for some patients. They may actually be counterproductive! In fact, a recent study showed that having more requirements leads to patients deciding not to get surgery. This means people who need it might be left out of bariatric surgery.

What do you think about pre-op requirements? Are they helpful? Were you required to have a long pre-op diet and go through a variety of tests? Did you think they were useful, or a barrier? Would you consider going self-pay just to avoid the hoops? Share your thoughts here!

I believe going through the requirements are beneficial because some people rarely see the doctor and to get clearance is important so you know what lies ahead. Taking risk with something happening is not good when have a family to think about.

Hi everyone. I have been on here quite a while but did not post much aside from congratulating others on their journeys. I guess it never really felt real for me until now. Started this journey on November last year and got the last of my testing done by beginning of March. Submitted and approved week and a half later. Had to wait for surgeon's schedule to open. Surgery is tomorrow and I am feeling quite calm. I did my preop liquid diet the past 2 weeks and have gotten past the anxious state. I am wondering now if I am a bit too calm or will nerves kick in later? I had gallbladder removed late last year and egd was also under anesthesia. Am I feeling too comfy because of that? Is this even normal? Just can't wait to be on the loser's bench and start on my rebirth! Good luck to those still waiting. Your time will come. Alohaemoji3.png

Good to you as well, Lola. Wishing you all the best.
