  1. Im excited to see how it goes for all of you! How is your liquid diet going?

Sent from my SM-N900V using BariatricPal mobile app

My pre-op diet isn't liquid, just has to be low carb, high Protein & under 800 cals a day. It's fairly easy for me, I'm really not hungry most of the time lately. Day 4/5 was the worst. I've decided that today I'll start doing all liquids though until surgery. I'd like to get down into the 230s before surgery (241 the past couple days, started at 260 before diet).

  2. I totally understand the struggle. I was a smoker for 20 years. I was prescribed Wellbutrin and honestly quit in a couple weeks. I wasn't even trying; smoking just didn't sound good anymore. It still doesn't. I've quit multiple times in my life but this was HANDS DOWN the easiest. I would recommend anyone to try it and see if the same holds true for them.

  3. I just was wondering does anybody not have to do the liquid diet before surgery. I went to my pre-op testing today, and they said once they got everything back and its normal they would medically clear me for surgery. After that I just have to go to a nutrition class, but I don't have a do any liquid diet, is that normal.

I don't have to do liquid, but I do have to do a low cal, low fat, low carb diet for 2 weeks with Protein Shakes (under 800 calories/day). I start this coming Tuesday and honestly can't wait! I'm sure I'll think different a few days in. [emoji6]

  4. I'm still 3 weeks before surgery, but I have the same issue and really hoping it resolves with weight loss. It's extremely hard for me to bend over or stand/walk for a long period. It's frustrating that I can't do things that someone in their mid 30's should be able to do. I haven't seen anyone about it since I always thought they would just tell me to lose weight. So hopefully we're both right and the pain will go away!

  5. I'm going to first say that I am a huge Water drinker. I never go anywhere without my water. So during summer or workouts I'm used to drinking a lot. This has honestly been the thing I'm worried about the most after surgery. That for some reason I need more water than normal and I won't be able to get enough and get dehydrated. Especially with summer coming up and how I'm outside a lot, I worry.

So especially for those of you who had this done when it's hot outside, could you manage? Will I have to stay inside more than I'm used to? Will there ever be a time when I'll be able to drink a lot at once? Any advice would be great!

I take prevacid and have for years. It was well controlled prior to surgery, and I don't have any GERD since the surgery.

Thank you. That gives me hope that the meds will continue to work even if I still have it after surgery.

  7. My surgeon recommended bypass for me over the sleeve since I have GERD. They said they could do the mini gastric bypass if I wanted something with less malabsorption.

I'm still going to go with the sleeve though because bypass scares me. I didn't have GERD issues before gaining weight so I'm hopeful that it will subside with weight loss or remain manageable. Worse case scenario I'll have to have a revision.

Bypass scares me as well. I do think that the majority of my issues are food related (binging, eating before bed, spicy food), so hopefully I won't have as much of an issue. I'm also hopeful that since my meds work that they will keep on working, although I was hoping at first that the heartburn would resolve itself with losing weight.

  8. I'm just starting to look more into GERD after VSG (surgery next month). I'm seeing that about half of all sleepers have issues with it after surgery. What if you have issues with it before surgery?

I'm on omeprazole (Prilosec) and have been for maybe 9 months. I had daily heartburn before and now I haven't had ANY since I've been on this med. So for people that had taken meds BEFORE surgery, do they still work afterwards?

  9. I had odd EKGs as well (more than one). Something about my left ventricle. I had to go through a stress EKG, then a stress EKG with u/s and after that I was cleared (nothing wrong). The doc had told me that more than likely the stress EKG would turn out bad and that we would have to do the u/s one (my insurance wouldn't cover the u/s one until the other was done first). I'm also 34 and he basically knew I would be fine but you know, they have to cover their butts. This all pushed my surgery back a couple months, but I will be having it done in May.

I would say to just stay on top of it. Get your appointments in sooner rather than later. Don't stress too much about it.

    Good luck!

  10. The nutritionist has a body composition scale. Immediately prior to surgery I was 44% fat... nice, hey? For a woman my age the healthy range is 21-33% body fat and they recommend the goal being 30%.

Well, I looked online for calculators and one said 28% and another said 50-some %. I'm betting mine is more towards the 50% [emoji6].

  11. I just got my date yesterday and will be going in on May 2. My pre op meeting is 4/19, which is my birthday. I think it's kind of poetic[emoji846]. I fall down with the nutrition but actually still work out and see a personal trainer twice a week. I think this will help with my recovery that I'm going in to surgery being pretty fit (for a really fat person anyway).
I thought long and hard about surgery and always thought, let me try one more time on my own. I haven't gotten anywhere except fatter and I thought to myself, what am I waiting for? I don't want to be in this same position in 5 years having been losing and gaining again. So I decided to just do it.

Mine is on May 9th, so just a week after!

  12. I'm 5'8 and via a 1 year long liquid diet went from 350 to 180 lbs. 180 for me was perfect for my frame, bearing in mind dome of the extra weight I had from excess skin. I also had a fair bit of muscle as I worked out a lot. Sadly, I'm back to 300 lbs as I get ready to be sleeved.

I think that is what a lot of us have been through - losing weight and then gaining it back. Sometimes I think "hey, you can do this with just a diet, you've done it before". But then I remember that I gained it all back (plus more). It's been such a cycle time and time again. I'm hoping that with the sleeve, when I'm weak, it will help me get through.

    When is your surgery?

  13. My nutritionist wants us to aim for 30% body fat, not a weight or BMI.
According to their calculations (body composition) that will put me at 186. I'm 5'7".
Apparently I've been right all along and my bones are made of concrete

How do you determine body fat? I've always sworn I'm "big boned", but who knows. Maybe I can be small.

  14. Thank you for the responses!

I had gotten down to 170 a few years ago and I felt pretty good then. Other than that I haven't been under 170 for about 15 years and through that time I've had children. I think HS weight was around 140 but I was not healthy (eating disorders).

So I guess I'll probably just have to wait until a few months after surgery to decide on a final goal weight. I'm just getting excited I suppose and trying to visualize everything. As long as I can get around better and start getting my outside work done (garden, animals) I'll be happy. It would of course be nice to get off of BP meds as well and be smaller than hubby again!

  15. I suppose the 'goal weight' would probably be getting back to a normal BMI. I personally think it is bullshit though.
Your goal weight should be the weight at which you are healthy and where you can comfortably exercise, and are not constantly starving. Throwing out an arbitrary weight goal is just crap. Allowing a Dr. to tell you your weight goal is even worse. Keep that in mind as you progress through the process. You want to get to a healthy for you weight, not an arbitrary number.

I totally get that. I will be perfectly happy as long as I can be moving around more without being in pain. I guess I just see others posting theirs and it's a pretty big range (I'm 5'6" so between 118 & 154). I honestly can't see myself going below 150-160, and even that I think is very unlikely.

  16. When did you start your 6 month plan and when did it all get submitted to insurance?

Insurance has denied me because they say there isn't 6 months of a documented weight loss plan.

I went to my PCP in October of last year. She weighed me and we talked about diet/exercise along with getting my referral to a bariatric center in our area. I started going to them in November and have not missed a month. So, March should have been month 6, correct? I'm not sure if they just aren't counting the PCP one or if they count their months differently (October-November, November-December, December-January, January-February, February-March would only be 5?).

If anyone has had this situation and had it resolved, I would love to hear from you! Although I will know the answer in a few days I can't help but ask!
