    Post op weight gain?

I gained about that much and maintained for about 5 weeks after. I didn't really start to lose until I could eat real food again! I just stayed off the scale for a while and followed my plan.

    Calorie Question

Can you share how quickly you lost your weight and how much? I'm currently 3 months and trying to figure out how much I should eat too.
  3. @heathers. Yes, I did see that study about artificial sweeteners! I've never drank them, but their dubious safety always concerned me since my parents down diet drinks. Even more concerned now!
  4. Here's the NIH study: https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC4125316/ Here's a quote from the conclusion: Obviously, each case would need to be weighed with their doctor. But it certainly concerns me! FYI, food-based calcium is not indicated with the CVD risk.
  5. Now that I've been reading a lot of other people's stories on here, I think he might be! He's very aware of current science, which I'm grateful for. My latest concern is the NIH study on heart issues and calcium supplements, which he is also considering changing his stance on. I feel great! To be totally honest, I feel kind of sluggish and "thick" when I have any more than 15% (30g for me) of protein a day. I feel much better closer to 25g/day. But I'm trying to be compliant, so I'm doing 30-35. I know that every body reacts differently--and you're right OutsideMatch, the RDAs just barely keep you from being sick and getting rickets, etc. Like for you, it seems like your body really thrives on higher protein. Mine feels much better with lots of fruit and complex carbs with lower fat and protein. My comfort in the RDA is at least it's the minimum, so I won't get sick. Granted--I am tracking carefully and will see how I do over time! I'm always open to adjusting when something doesn't work for me.
  6. It is really weird how none of them agree! It really makes you wonder if all these rules really matter so much if we're all going in the right direction with weight loss.
  7. Nope, no typo. My surgeon changed protein requirements in the last couple of years from around 80g to 30g based on the latest research on harmful effects of excess protein. He's done something over 3,000 of these surgeries so I tend to believe him! Also, if you do the math, that's about 15 percent protein if I'm eating 800/cals day. Which is actually the RDA % for protein, so I feel fine about doing it this way. If I were a tall male though, I might have more protein daily--the RDA is still 15% for guys, but of course you need more calories in a day (lucky!) so the number is higher.
  8. I've been drilling my nutritionist and PA about this because I'm a big nutrition nerd and a big food tracker. They were reluctant to tell me because they are much more interested in the "four habits" and they say that will take care of a calorie deficit for me. Of course, I needed to know more than that! Haha. So they finally said that I should eat 800-1000 calories a day and 30 grams of protein. We are instructed to eat only whole foods, no protein shakes or supplements. They didn't mention the ratio of carbs to fat, but I go lower fat personally because it makes me feel sluggish when I have more fat (always has). I've come to realize that I need to experiment with my body and see what works for me. I also do cardio kickboxing several times a week, so I'm burning a lot of calories. My daily caloric deficit is an average of 2,600 per day! I'm still finding the balance between fueling and losing, but I usually eat around 900 cals per day and it seems to be working for weight loss.

    Frustrating stalls!

Yep, my surgeon says the latest research shows we only require 30g of protein a day, so that's my goal. Super easy to get! He's got over 3500 patients so I trust him, it also lines up with research I've read as well. But yeah, I'm also doing much better with the higher calorie range!

    Frustrating stalls!

I'm 7 weeks post op too! I didn't lose anything for 4 weeks, I actually gained 6 pounds! I honestly just followed my plan, which eventually had me eating more. I track my food so I know I was getting 300-400 cals during my plateau and now I'm getting 700-800 and losing weight pretty quickly. I'm starting my workouts again this week so we'll see how that effects it.

Has anyone kept it a secret?

I'm a private person and I didn't want to tell anyone. I've lost 120 pounds and gained 160, lost 100, and gained 170 over the last 15 years. I don't want to tell people about my eating disorder or food addiction or emotional issues, so I don't see why it's a bad thing to keep this to myself too. I told my mother because she's also had WLS and that was a mistake because she told my brothers, who told their wives, etc. I explicitly told her not to tell anyone and now I have no idea who knows and if they sit there judging me in silence. Some might say who cares what they think, but I care when people are always checking out my body to see how much weight I've lost. For people I'm sure that have no clue that ask me what I'm doing I tell them I'm eating healthy foods and watching portions. That's absolutely true!
  12. I never really considered sleeve because I wanted to lose the most weight possible. I asked my surgeon (one of the top in my area) why people choose sleeve and he said "because it's trendy. Soon it will go the way of the once-trendy lap band." That really made me 100% set on RNY.
  13. Awesome! By three years it's really just a part of you, so this won't be much of a struggle (I mean, more than any one else has). And I agree, my husband and I have no health problems and look years younger than our age--I attribute it to the veganism! So why I finally chose to do the surgery. I have a very long history of weight problems, since I was about seven years old. Both of my parents have had weight problems (my mom did RNY in 2014), so I was down that road really early. Around 2002, I decided I wanted to lose weight (I was about 260 at the time), and I was very successful--I lost 120 pounds! I kept it off for a few years, but due to a traumatic event, I allowed myself to gain back everything and more. I got up to 280. A few years later, I gave it another go with Weight Watchers. I love WW and I love to exercise. I lost 90 pounds. But once again, I let stress get in my way and gained it all back, plus more this time! I was diagnosed with binge eating disorder and basically just gave up. I kept working out because I love it, but I was just so out of hope of really keeping weight off. One day, my hubby and I had a big, deep conversation. I realized that not only would this weight make me very sick eventually (my parents have many health problems), but I couldn't have kids safely. It was seriously affecting our relationship, and of course I just hated how I looked and felt. I started to actually have "fat people problems" which I never had before (problems putting on shoes, airplane seats, etc.). I was stuck so long with the stigma that surgery is the easy way out that I was wasting my life. I realized that I didn't care what other people thought about how I lost weight anymore. I wanted the years of my life that were slipping away. This is still work, but at least at the end I know I will succeed. If you think you have your answer already--then you do! If you decide to go through with it, I'd be happy to share any tips from my journey (albeit only a few weeks so far!).
  14. Hi! I'm three weeks post op from RNY and I've been vegan for 13 years. I've had no issues getting protein or any other nutrient, and my dietician has been great. My surgeon actually said being vegan is the number one thing we can do to extend our lives but most people will never do it. Good thing we are! I had two weeks of protein supplement but now I'm on normal cooked foods and doing fine.

    Nutritional Yeast!

I love nooch! As a 13-year vegan I've tried it every which way. I've come to love its stinky foot smell! Haha

    The dreaded week 3 stall.

Happened to me too, I just stopped looking at the scale every day because I know it will go down eventually. Also--we have the same surgery date, cool!
