I am scheduled to have surgery on May 31, and my husband broke his foot today, the heel bone. He may have to have surgery as soon as the end of this coming week, so I'm not sure yet but I may have to postpone my surgery. I feel so sorry for him, he even feels so bad about it that he keeps apologizing to me for his foot being broken, and it's not his fault. I would never let him know that I'm crying inside at the thought of having to wait after all my hard work to get to this point, I just said we'll figure it out, no big deal. He is looking at being non-weight bearing on the broken foot for maybe two months with or without surgery. We see the orthopedic surgeon on Monday or Tuesday so hopefully he can give us a better idea of what to expect. I do feel horrible that this has happened to him, and I feel like such an a-hole for even worrying about my surgery with what he's going through. Jeez, why can't anything just be easy for once?

I know this will sound selfish
ChaosUnlimited replied to ChaosUnlimited's topic in Duodenal Switch Surgery Forum
Thanks to all for the encouragement, I felt so bad yesterday for focusing on myself, even if it was in my own mind! I'm not going to decide about postponing until we see the orthopedic surgeon. I'm more concerned about my husband than me, because I don't know what the long term will bring for him in terms of being able to walk without pain and a limp, so I want to make sure his recovery comes first. The swelling is so awful in that foot that I'm not sure if they can even do any surgery until the swelling decreases some. Out of all the things he could have broken, that is probably one of the worst case scenarios. -
I second Zumba, it's so fun it doesn't feel like you're working out! My son recently started getting into rock climbing. He goes to an indoor facility and at least near us the prices are pretty reasonable. I want to start going once I get stronger and lose a bit more weight. I've done it once or twice in my thinner days and it's a real work out.

Congrats on your achievement so far and the encouragement!

Nervous, need advice! ( Pre op date June 5th)
ChaosUnlimited replied to Lexington1020's topic in Duodenal Switch Surgery Forum
@Lexington1020 Usually they'll do basic blood work like a chemistry panel and a blood count. Among other things, those tests can look at your liver function, electrolytes like potassium and sodium, whether you're anemic, or have any current infections. They usually do an EKG to make sure you have no heart irregularities, and a chest x-ray to make sure you have no lung problems that have to be taken in to account before putting you to sleep for surgery. Different surgeons may have their own preferences for pre-op tests, so you may have other tests, or not require one of the ones I mentioned. The tests are meant to make sure you are healthy enough for surgery. -

Odds are that all the pre-op tests will be fine. Try to keep busy to occupy your mind and the time will fly by! -
Feeling uglier
ChaosUnlimited replied to anthonyb's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
I was also going to suggest finding a new pastime or hobby to meet more people, like @Sosewsue61 did. I've had friends who tried the online dating thing and found more fake people than genuine ones. Not saying it's impossible, but I think the odds are not in your favor there. Anyone who calls you ugly is dealing with their own insecurities and issues, find other people that build you up instead of trying to tear you down. Know that you are worth better than that type of treatment and don't put up with it or believe it, not for one second. -
I've not tried them myself yet, but I saw on another thread that Spanx makes workout clothes that do a good job of holding and supporting everything. The poster said expensive but worth it. I want to give them a try but will wait to lose most of my weight first because they are a little too pricey to only be able to wear for a short time.

Best blender/food processor for pureed food?
ChaosUnlimited posted a topic in Post-op Diets and Questions
I am pre-op but looking for a blender or food processor for when I get to the the pureed phase of post op. I have looked at the magic bullet, the ninja, and just basic ones but I'm indecisive. What do you use and why do you like it? And what uses does it have for after your puree phase, I hate to think it will just sit in my cabinet later. I currently use a $10 smoothie blender from Walmart for protein shakes which has served me well but I don't think it will puree very well. -

Thanks, I decided to hold off on the food processor for now and save the money. I figure if I need one badly enough when the time comes I have a 24 hr Walmart close by. -

Ugh. Frustrating. I called my insurance a bunch of times to check the status, you should call them and see where it's at. -

@jessgn Yes, it is! That is so awesome, we'll get to meet in person then! I'm excited too because I don't know anyone out there yet, met a few people at meetings but don't see them every time. I saw you post on the fb page, I recognized your picture. I'm sending you a fb friend request! -

What Were (or Are) Your Pre-Op WLS Requirements?
ChaosUnlimited replied to Alex Brecher's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
My requirements, between insurance and the surgical center: 5 Year weight history from PMD 6 month supervised diet Enrollment in the insurance bariatric program - basically had to schedule two phone calls with an insurance nurse and answer all the questions Psych Eval Sleep Study EGD Labs 3 Nutrition Classes with one more pre-surgery 2 Support Group/Education meetings 3 visits with surgeon No weight gain after starting the program, preferably weight loss The requirements were a real hassle, but in retrospect, necessary to ensure that I was ready to make the commitments needed post surgery. I have learned a lot, and I go into this surgery knowing that it will be a lifelong commitment and change is needed to be successful. The classes really motivated me to make changes in my diet and start exercising again, so while I wished the whole time that it was an easier process, I'm glad in that I feel very prepared for what I have to do. -
What to take to the Hospital?
ChaosUnlimited replied to MoneeMoe's topic in Duodenal Switch Surgery Forum
I would add dry shampoo if you have hair that is on the oily side. When I had kidney surgery a couple years ago I could only sponge bath for a couple days and I felt like my hair was nasty. -
Approval letter with date

I had the same question when I got mine, for UHC it turned out it was the earliest date I could schedule, but it didn't turn out to be the date I scheduled. -
Scheduling leeway?
ChaosUnlimited replied to passion4film's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
I just got scheduled today. My center asked when I was thinking of doing surgery, and I said late May/Very early June. So they gave me 3-4 dates to choose from initially, and would have looked for more if any of those didn't work. I was able to schedule around all my work commitments and I chose a Wednesday so I could work up to my surgery date and start my PTO for the next week. When you are ready to schedule I'm sure you will be able to say the time that would be best for you. -
I've tried the brands Celebrate, Bariatric Advantage, Nectar, and Nitro Tech Performance Series. I have favorites in each of the brands. Please help! I'm in a dilemma.
ChaosUnlimited replied to Dimples58's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
If you are meeting with the surgeon for the first time you will get lots of information to help make your decision. You don't usually have to tell them that day what you want. Bring a list of questions that you have when you go and ask the surgeon to go through the list with you. That way you don't forget anything. On my first visit, I went in thinking I wanted one procedure and left being a little unsure and wanting more information on the others. I researched online a lot, talked to people who had the procedures I was interested in, and eventually made my decision, but it was a process for me. It took me over a month to decide what I though was best for me. You will have time to think about it and decide. Keep learning as much as you can in the meantime. Good luck! -

How do I update my weight and such
ChaosUnlimited replied to Pistolkisstal's topic in Website Assistance & Suggestions
@Pistolkisstal What are you looking for? If you click on your username at the top of the page, choose "my surgery", then look at the left menu you can update most stats there. Although it can be glitchy, it wouldn't update for me until I put in my weight on date of surgery even though I'm still pre-op. I just used my current weight. -
Fun: Surprises after weight loss
ChaosUnlimited replied to Berry78's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
In the past as I lost weight my pants got longer. Pants that were the perfect length started to rub the ground and get caught under my heels. I guess they hung lower and there wasn't as much width to fill them out. Also, you always think to buy new clothes, but don't always remember to replace undergarments because they have a decent amount of stretch, until they don't. I was at the gym one day doing Zumba and my underwear fell down inside my work out pants. Luckily I had the pants on to keep them from hitting the ground, I'd hate to think if I was out somewhere dressed in a skirt!
