I am not quite a month out. Really not hungry. Hopefully, I will begin to desire some food. I have had some refried Beans and a soft boiled egg. (I only had a few bites of them and couldn't and didn't want anymore. I really hope I can eat better going forward.

But isn't it nice to not be DRIVEN by food, to be able to stop so easily, to not go to war with yourself over 10 calories' worth of egg? That's what I'm marveling at right now. This freedom is marvelous to me.

  2. For some reason the search isn't working for me right now, it just makes my page crash. I did try to find this before I asked!

I had my RNY on Thursday last. Everything went perfectly, and I came home yesterday (Saturday). I'm working on fluids and Protein. I have a G tube for some reason I can't remember (those drugs are STRONG) so I can put Liquid Protein straight into Q-bic (my pouch) if I get to the end of the day and I'm behind. So all is well.

Except I have this annoying dry (regularly productive at first, now rarely) cough. It started in the hospital and no one seemed bothered by it. They said it's normal, cough it up and get rid of it. Okay. I can do that.

But this dry cough is driving me batty. It wakes me up from sleeping, I have to struggle to sit up and hug a pillow, and you all know that coughing 3 days after surgery HURTS!!

Is this normal? Do I just have to muscle through this? Should I call my doc? If I'm being a wimp just tell me, but I haven't seen anything about coughing in all my months reading.

  3. I am a physical therapist assistant, and I have a patient load scheduled a month in advance. Year-round I am always fully booked. When I was preparing for surgery I told my employer that I was "having surgery" and that my surgeon insisted on 4 weeks of recovery time because my job is an active one. Legally they can't insist you tell them what surgery you are having. If your surgeon says two, three, four weeks, they can't argue. If you're covered by FMLA by all means apply for that. If you're covered by state disability (I am) then apply for that.

Advocate for yourself. Take care of yourself as if you were one of your patients. Learning to stand up for ourselves and our needs is as important as any of the other changes we have to make in living this post-surgical life. You will be a better employee if you take the time to heal properly.

    Yessss! Congratulations!

I was sleeved yesterday and I'm also feeling like I'm in great shape. Up and walking around 2 hrs after waking up in recovery. Sent home 2 hrs later (no overnight stay unfortunately).

Excuse my ignorance, but what is a swallow test? Ive heard it referenced here before, but don't know if I did it or not. The nurses did make sure i was sipping on Water and veggie broth without any issues. Was that a swallow test?

No, that wasn't. Basically you go to X-ray and they take baseline films, then you swallow contrast and they take more films. It's so they can see if your new pouch is leaking into your abdominal cavity. Q-bic (my pouch's new name, so called because it looked square in all the films) is fine and sealed and healthy!

  5. Surgery yesterday, and my swallow test went perfectly this morning. My doctor says "you're maybe even a little ahead" (I've been doing laps around the nurses station).

And who knew that chicken broth would taste this good?? And who knew that I'd be in a place where I hadn't eaten in 30 hours, and a few spoonfuls of broth were good to go? Who is this person? Just...WOW. I was really worried about eating so little food with that driving, desperate hunger. I get it now, though. Bye bye, Hungry Monster!

Looks like I won't be joining you all this month. Had my final weigh in and labs with my pcp on July 6. Can't get in for pre op appointment with surgeon until July 26. Then we wait for insurance. I also hear that my surgeon only has a few more dates left in August for surgeries. I am crushed. I am going on a 8 day cruise in October for my husbands 40th birthday and I wanted to be further along in the healing process.

You must be crushed. Keep your eyes on the prize, though. Don't give up!

I wish I had more to tell. I was postponed by two weeks as my pre-op showed I had high blood pressure. I've never had it before but I suppose I've never been this heavy before.

It's now looooooowwww and I'm scheduled for 26th July. It's been a bit of an emotional roller coaster as a result. Thankfully my pre-op diet is real food and it just means my cooking needs to be imaginative. Must be working - I've lost 28 lbs since mid June (I started early!). It's good for the soul!

Wow, John! That's a whole saga right there. I'm sorry you got postponed but at least not cancelled, right?

Abd way to go with losing so much so fast! My surgeon has had me on a diet for the last 6 months and I've only lost 32. But I guess that's why I'm having metabolic surgery, huh?

My surgery date is the day after yours, I'll be thinking of you!

Oh yeah I'm almost never hungry! But the head hunger is real. I find myself craving bad crap like chips. Or like today I would love to have a piece of cake. But if I'm busy doing something and being distracted I have no real hunger.

How do you bring yourself to eat puree meat? I know I should but I just can't:( I made egg salad and pureed that. It was like eating the guts of a deviled egg lol so good.

I've been using the baby spoons and toddler plates and that's really helped with over eating or eating too fast.

Ooohhh, seriously, this whole 6 months prep time I've been unable to even think about puréed meat. I still get completely grossed out at the thought. I can totally picture puréed egg salad, though. It's so close to puréed already!

I've been thinking about toddler dishes/utensils but I don't have kids, never have. I can't picture myself eating off of Dora the Explorer or Nemo, honestly. What I DO have, however, is an extensive collection of unique dishes in all shapes and sizes. I intend to indulge myself with those. :)

I'm 8 days post op. Today is my 37 birthday and I hit 50 pounds lost :) 9 of those since surgery.

Pain after surgery was no joke. But the pain was never in my stomach it was always in my collar bone area. Gas I think. But they were really good about keeping up with meds. They had me on a pump so I was pretty well covered. Until they started making me drink liquid tylonol and crushed pain pills...yuck!

For me I don't have bad days, good days. I have good and bad moments of the day. Mornings are bad because my stomach is very empty and it hurts. I normally feel better after a shake.

Scrambled eggs, sugar free pop cycles, mashed potatoes and shakes are pretty much what I've been living on. I did try cream of wheat and that sat pretty well. I stop after a little while because I've yet to feel full and I'm afraid to get to that point.

Physically I'm doing well. I've been doing laundry and when grocery shopping. Lots of walking. I'm lucky having 5 kiddos because it means I have lots of help with the picking up and moving stuff. I'm down to one or two pain pills a day and tylonol the rest of the time.

What a magnificent birthday present. Congratulations!

I was sleeved on July 10. Here's my update 6 days out: my program had me on liquids until post-op day three. Now I'm in the midst of purees. I can eat a couple level tablespoons of purees, tops. I've been eating two meals of Protein purees, such as chicken puréed with bone broth, and replacing one meal a day with a Protein shake to help me get in fluids and protein. I've been able to get in around 40-45 grams of protein a day in these last couple days and around 40 ounces of Water. I'm hoping I'll be up to at least 60 grams of protein and 64 ounces of Water a day by next week some time. My pain is totally minimal at this point. I'm really feeling great and already so happy that I made the decision to go through with this. I have a little bit of an appetite but I'm totally satisfied with the tiny portions I've been eating. Good luck to all the July sleevers coming up and I can't wait to hear how everyone one else is doing post-op!

It sounds like you're doing great! I'm still trying to accept the reality that a couple of spoonfuls a couple of times a day will keep me satisfied and healthy...guess I'll see when I get there!
