    Anyone From Houston?

Krenea...yes I had RNY by pass. I will be 5 weeks post op tomorrow. Best decision I've ever made. My first nursing job was as a post op surgical nurse and I used to take care of patients who had the procedure. It's come a long ways since then. Laparoscopic is one of the advances. Back then everything was done open. If I could give one piece of advice...follow the drs orders to the letter. There's a reason for the instructions. Don't advance your diet until you're supposed to. I took care of patients who were admitted back due to complications and 8 out of 10 were because they didn't follow the instructions they were given. And don't give in to head hunger. It will pass...I promise.

Hey Krenea! I had mine done in Houston at the Med Center. Where are you having yours? Are you having by pass?

    Introduction..Just saying hello!

Kim, that is awesome! I'm going to take your advice for sure. I haven't started to workout. To be honest I'm a RN and I work 13-14 hours on my feet and my energy hasn't been the best. I did start today walking on my treadmill. I have to get clearance at my 6 week check up but want to join a gym. I LOVE to swim and yoga. I've noticed it's easier for me to get my fluids in if I do plain water versus crystal light or anything like that. I've always been a water drinker so it's not what I'm drinking. It's the feeling of being full. Today I ate one egg and it filled me up like a steak would have. LoL. Another thing I'm trying to do is to only weigh myself once a week. My sister recommended every other week. Thank you so much for the advice. I can't wait to join a gym. I was online looking at them tonight. I'm so very ready.

Kim what do you do to get past your stalls? I noticed if I get closer to my Fluid amount it helps. The scale said down 2 this morning but I know it could say back up tomorrow. I try not to weigh myself too much but it's hard. Any advice you have I would greatly appreciate.

    Introduction..Just saying hello!

I'm doing good I think. I've lost 30 pounds since my surgery and 43 all together. I'm still on puréed foods. I don't eat food a whole lot. I focuse on my Protein and Fluid intake. I get the protein in but the fluids have been tough. I've noticed it slowly getting better. Hate I've hit this stall (been 2 weeks now) but I know my body needs to adjust. My sister had it done 5 years ago and lost 150 pounds and managed to maintain it. I text her a lot. Vee..Kim pretty much said what a stall is. You'll hit them and it's normal. Like someone else said it's like climbing stairs..every now and then your body has to stop and rest on a step for a bit to rest. Catches its breath and starts losing again.. Major shock to our bodies. I'm Michelle btw but go by Mickie as well...

Hi! Had my by pass 1/30/17. How is everyone doing so far? I've hit a stall already. Ugh! ☹️

    Dripping incision site

As a previous post surgical nurse and a post op RNY patient I can assure you leaking from an incision site is not normal. If this doesn't subside I highly recommend you be seen by your surgeon. Sounds like one of your incisions hasn't sealed properly. Good luck! [emoji846]

    3 weeks post op

So normal. It does get better. Hang in there. [emoji846]

    Almost died

@Jill_Me I never thought of that. It did strike me as odd that anyone would come home from major surgery and peel a orange and eat it.
  11. Might not want to scramble the egg. My nut told us that for some reason patients tend not to do so well with scrambled eggs. She assumed maybe it had to do with the scrambling part..maybe adding air? Either way she recommend cooking them a different way than scrambled. Said patients did much better. So it may not be that you at it too fast at all... Just an FYI...
  12. You're very welcomed. I'm 4 weeks post-op from by pass surgery. I'm allowed puréed foods. My 6 week follow up is on the 15th and I should be advanced to food then. It's been a heck of a journey. I had horrible head hunger the first week in a half to two weeks. But it passes. It takes a bit for your head to catch up to your body...but it will. Just every day try and stay focus. Keeping a journal helps me. I can visibly see what I'm taking in. My issue is fluid intake. Not taking in enough. I can get my proteins in fine but liquids I struggle on. So hang in there. The head hunger should pass. I get up every day and say a prayer and try to do the best I can. I'm down 42 pounds and feel so much better. You'll get there...I promise. Just follow your doctors orders. They aren't just to make this successful for you they are also to help prevent serious complications. You can do this! [emoji846]
  13. That's awesome! You can do it. But I do recommend you reach out to someone who can help you stay focused. The fact you're so early into this journey and have had several 'hiccups' says you could probably use the extra help. I find a support group to be of great help. You're not alone..
  14. Wow! I think you need to figure why you're dead set on sabotaging your self. Because if I recall after the orange ordeal you said never again. And now this? I think it's apparent you weren't committed to what it takes to be successful at this. I'm a cardiac RN..I deal with non compliant patients all the time. People who think they know better than the medical profession. They sabotage their recovery. Refuse to follow doctors orders. End up sicker or worse..dead. You're going to do some serious damage if you haven't already. Better seek help. Support group..therapist. Someone who can help you. I wish you luck.
  15. I'm in the puréed stage and I stick mostly to cottage cheese, Greek yogurt and refried beans. As far as the cottage cheese goes I eat it alone with a little bit of pepper. I keep it short and sweet. I focus on my protein and fluid intake. One thing else I really enjoy is sugar free popsicles. Good luck! [emoji846]

    Carbs post surgery

I'm shocked you're eating solids 3 weeks post op. Are you sure you're supposed to be eating solids this early? I had the by pass and can't start solids until 6 weeks. That being said you need to focus on protein. Chicken is fine but I would cut out the rice all together. Always protein first! Make sure you're hitting your daily protein and fluid intake. I'm four weeks post-op and have lost 30 pounds. Please make sure you follow your diet plan to the letter. There's a reason why it's laid out the way it is. Good luck!

    Transverse colon mass

Keri...I know this is hard but try and take it as a blessing they found it before things got worse for you. I'm a cardiac nurse and many of my patients I receive are ones who were having a workup for another type of surgery and discovered they had a serious cardiac issue that they had no clue they had. Basically allowing us to save their life. I know how disappointing it must be you weren't able to get your surgery but honestly this too could have saved your life. I will be praying for you. I hope you'll stay in touch and let us know how you're doing. [emoji847]

    Health insurance

Health insurance is based on the plan your employer picks or you are paying for. There is no standard for wls coverage. That is why you hear people with the same insurance company but one covers the surgery and the other doesn't. It's based on the plan not the insurance company. I don't think people understand this. Employers pick what plans they provide to their employees. They are not cookie cutter.

    Did anyone get

I did. I work at a hospital and I was approved for short term disability for the four weeks I was off. [emoji846]

    Scared of Surgery

It comes down to personal choice. I can say this, as I used to be a post op surgical nurse. The majority..not all.. of my patients who had complications from gastric bypass were those who did not follow our orders to the letter. There is a method to our madness and a reason why you are sent home with strict instructions. By pass is truly a lifestyle change. I am 4 weeks post op and loving the decision I have made. With any surgery there is risk of complications. I made my choice based on how much weight I need to lose and which procedure would help me achieve that goal. Also there were so medical reasons. I too want to be here for my kids and I know I wouldn't be if I had continued down the path I was going. I wish you the best in making your decision. [emoji846]

    Tachycardia

I was a bit tachy before surgery. After I was brady...my heart rate dropped into the 40's and stayed their until about my one week follow up were it was in the 90's.

    Quick start

I too was a self pay. Only had to do a few things before my surgery. EGD, lab work, meet with nut, and psych eval. I would have had my surgery within two weeks but my job (RN) required me to work through my current schedule. So I had mine about 30 days after initial appointment with my surgeon. As far as driving, my surgeon said not to until I wasn't taking any pain meds. That's a good question to ask your surgeons office. Wishing you the best of luck! [emoji846]

    Need help choosing procedure

I too had c-sections and had adhesions removed two times. I'm almost 4 weeks post op on my gastric by pass surgery. I choose gastric because from people I've seen as a person and a RN gastric patients tend to loose more and have a better success rate of keeping it off. I have well over 100 pounds to lose and for me gastric by pass stood a better chance at getting me close to my goal weight. Also, my sister had it done 5 years ago and she looks amazing. You have to do what you feel is best for you. Many are very successful with the sleeve. I just know I need a stricter lifestyle in order to maintain weight loss and I feel the by pass gives me that. The first week or two of recovery was tough. I had a lot of head hunger and dumping once. But now...I feel amazing! My back pain is almost completely gone and I'm still on the puréed portion of recovery. Do your research...ask questions of your surgeon. You'll find your answers. I wish you all the best! Alcohol

I'm not sure when you can but my nut did say it will hit you a lot harder than before. One drink can send you flying. My sister had her by pass 5 years ago and she told me the first time she had a glass of wine it was like she'd drank the whole bottle. LoL [emoji23]

    Dumping

You need to follow your doctors instructions to the letter. I'll tell you what I tell my patients when I discharge them...there is a method to our madness. You might not agree with our instructions but unless you want complications it's in your best interest to follow them. Hopefully you didn't do any permanent damage. Good luck. [emoji846]
