Meryline reacted to James Marusek in Gym or no gym, that is the question
AZBlackhawk since you had RNY gastric bypass surgery, either walking through your neighborhood or going to the gym is fine. Realize that you will transition to the Maintenance phase much sooner than someone who was sleeved. I had gastric bypass and I transitioned for the Weight Loss phase to the Maintenance phase at around 7 months. Sleeve patient have much slower weight loss rates and sometimes transition at 2 years. So if you hold off exercising until after the 6th month, that makes no sense. All the sources that I have come in contact with advise exercise. It doesn't need to be strenuous. It should be around 30 minutes of walking each day or equivalent.
For the first year after surgery, I did hill walking. My driveway is very steep and I walked each day. The next year I tried the gym but since a round trip to the gym was 1 1/2 hours, I only went around one or two times a week. I am a firm believer in manual labor. There is always work to do such as shoveling snow off my 700 foot driveway or cutting my large lawn. And I have projects. On my 2nd and 3rd year post-op, I build an underground shelter. We were struck by tornados soon after I retired. It destroyed around 200 of my large trees. In this project I moved 100,000 pounds of gravel by hand along with around 60,000 pounds of concrete blocks the second year and about the same amount in the 3rd year. This year I constructed a log cabin playhouse for the grandkids.

Mine is 36. But I'm also not done, I still have another 31 lbs to go before I have a normal BMI. I just think it's ridiculous that my BMI indicates that I'm obese. I don't see an obese person when I look in the mirror.

This highlights how absurd BMI is. This picture is from last Monday. I was 183 lbs. BMI 30.5 I think it was. Obese class 1. When I look at that picture, I don't look obese, I don't feel obese. I don't consider myself obese. I started with an BMI of 42+, obese class 2.
I have another 31 lbs to loose to reach a normal BMI. It might not happen and I'm okay with that. I have lost 74.5 lbs since two weeks before surgery (surgery date 3.20.17)

I weigh everything that goes into my mouth unless the packaging is less than my max and has the weight on it.
I gained this weight by not controlling what I eat, I'm using this time to build tools to sustain this in the long run.

I'm not even 5 months out from surgery and I have noticed that it's totally a slider for me as well, and it scares me a little.
I'm hoping that my logic of "I chew it really well, it doesn't need that much space in my stomach as on my plate" logic is right.

My daily meal looks like this:
Breakfast: 1 egg and 4oz black Beans
Lunch: 4oz chicken with salad or veggies
Snack: 1oz nuts and 3oz fruit
Dinner: 4oz meat or fish and nonstarchy veggies
I supplement with low sodium v8 or coconut Water (for electrolytes).
This is how to meet Protein goals and low carbohydrate goals with real food and without dairy.

The irony of obese people who had to to resort to WLS judging other obese people who had to resort to WLS is staggering.
Obese is obese. Whether you're 250 pounds or 650 pounds, the struggles are basically the same.
    Be humble and remember that.

When I saw my pcp we talked about a healthy weight for me. I am short and busty. When I wa son my 30's I got to 155 and was in a size 10- my surgeon said he thought I could get to 139. I haven't seen that since I was in my teens. My pcp said 150 is probably more reasonable given my frame. I believe that still puts me overweight- I'm 5' 2.5" tall. I have a heavy solid build naturally. I think we need to listen to our bodies- not everyone should be a size 4. Get to where you are comfortable and healthy.

I'm kinda conflicted. On one hand you are obviously infinitely healthier than you were 75 lbs ago, and you certainly look totally normal to me. You don't look overweight to me at all. On the other hand, though... even though the BMI formula isn't perfect, the data show greater health risks for people above a "normal" BMI. So while I'd love to dismiss it I'm still anxious to get into at least the overweight category if not the normal.
BMI is basically an estimate of your body fat. It often understates obesity in short people and overstates it in tall people. And, obviously the very athletic who have lots of LBM get miscategorized as well. I've also read some research that proposes an alternate BMI schedule for Asian-Americans (currently understates obesity) and African-Americans (currently overstates obesity). So if you're in the normal body fat range for women then you shouldn't worry about BMI and just carry on being active and eating nutritious foods.
But the truth is most of us don't know our body fat, short of visiting a health club and paying for the DEXA scan. (From what I've read, the presence of excess skin after WLS makes calipers unreliable.) In that case, BMI can be a useful tool.
So, I dunno. I don't think we should totally throw out BMI and say it's useless. Statistically speaking it predicts health outcomes and mortality rates. But I do get why it feels inaccurate or frustrating when your body is strong and you're active and have healthy habits but the height/weight ratio tells you you're part of The Obesity Epidemic. So, I feel you! You look awesome and it's hard to believe you are just four months out from surgery! Amazing!
