  1. I have to stop drinking 10-15 min before I eat. Sometimes I drink almost right before I eat. The reason I have to drink that close to my meals is to wash out the stomach so to speak. After I eat I have to wait at least 30 min before I can drink again.

    Water

So for people with gastric bypass, water is sometimes too hard on the stomach. It can bee too cold, too warm, and just in general. My support group, with people 10-15 years out, suggest to try tea, cold tea. Or anything that is not plain water, but dosn't have a ton of sugar in it. I drink cold tea, a bottle has 10 calories and 1.6g of carbs. The brand is Teekanne here in Austria.

    What's the best protein bar?

Quest bar for sure. I love those. 20g of protein and only 4 carbs. I usually get mine from iHerb

    Post Op activity

I was quickly up and walking. sadly I had some back issues that made it very painful for me to walk, but after a nerve block, I have had over 10 000 steps every day (mostly over 15 000) since 2 weeks post op. It would hurt a little to bend over, because of internal surgery wounds, but other than that, no problem. I only had bandages/band-aids on my wounds. I had the staples removed at one week post op (had to have an MRI, it's usually done at 10 days). The quicker you get up and moving, the better it is.

    Bread Products!

@Jeffrey Stern it's all about the chewing. I had to, and still have to , chew everything to puree. No way around it. Tiny bites and chew chew chew
  6. I had RNY just over 3 months ago, and only regret is not doing it sooner. I'm down 66.4 lbs, 12.3 lbs was during a 2 week pre op diet. I'm less than 40 lbs from normal bmi. I did the surgery to try and prevent another back surgery. I am scheduled for one on October 3rd, and just looking at my MRI pictures, my surgeon would do it in two weeks. Then he looked at me, and what I have accomplished in the past 3 months, he postponed it, and thinks we don't have to do it at all. I have had no problems since surgery. First day was uncomfortable, but I was quickly up and walking. My program had me on solids by day 4, and I haven't had dumping or food problems. I have had 3 foamies, but that was due to my stomach not ready to go off acid reducers after 8 week (almost all programs will have you on that for some time, no matter what). No problem staying on them longer. I'm walking 15-20 000 steps on average a day, lift weights twice a week and swim with a team once a week. (2-3 000m) I feel great, I sleep great, several of my aches and pains are gone or less. My health is just so much better.

    Bread Products!

My program puts us on solids by day 4. If you stay in the hospital until day 3, which most do, they'll feed you a bread product on that day. It's this crisp thing that basically falls part when it hit your mouth, but it's a bread product. For the first 6 weeks you are allowed to have day old bread, nothing fresh. After week 6, everything is allowed. I'm just over 3 months, I have had tortilla, protein bread, Finn Crisp and a few other things. I don't eat it every day, but almost every week.

    Holy Dumping Syndrome, Batman!

@mrsroyaleIt sounds like you had something called foamies. I have had 3 of them, and they are so freaking painful. Hope this helps a little. A few answers copied from another threads. "Foamies" are when you vomit up part of your meal (a nasty saliva foamy mix). It happens if you eat too much, eat too fast, or don't chew well enough. Foamies result when your stoma becomes blocked and the body's natural reaction is to produce a slimy foam liquid and copious amounts of it. After you experience this once or twice, you tend to detect the warning signs and stop before you get to this stage." " You can avoid them by taking small bites, chew-chew-chew, eat slowly, measure small portions and stick to them, and avoid dry food " " It hurt right in the center of my chest and I started to get juicy jaws (when saliva starts pouring) "
  9. I'm 9 weeks post op RNY today. Last week, as per my program, I stopped Nexium 40mg (Acid Reflux meds). First day off was fine, did feel some tightening when I eat, but other than that, okay. Second day off, I managed to get breakfast down, but 2 bites of lunch, and the tightening in my chest got so bad, that I just had to drink something to get it up. It came up with a lot of slime. I first thought I hadn't drunk enough before eating, so it eas an attack of the foamies. The following day I made sure i drank enough, breakfast was fine, but lunch again came back up. I called my surgeon. I have had no problems with food what so ever up until this point. I have been on solids since day 4, as per my program, and everything has been fine. He put me back on Nexium 40 mg for 2 weeks, and then 20mg for 1-2 weeks before trying to go off them again. If I still have problems, I have to head into the hospital for them to take a look at me. I'm back on Nexium, and no problem. Food goes down as before, except I'm more cautious, I don't want it to happen again. I eat very slow, and chew very very well. Some extra information. I have always thought that I have been hungry about half an hour after eating. I have made sure to drink a lot, and just power through it until the next meal. Same thing after that. Thinking back, it hasn't been hungry like I used to feel hungry, more like a very light burning sensation. Could it be acid reflux despite being on meds? Can I risk having to stay on Nexium for a long time, maybe even forever? Can it already have done some damage? Anyone else experienced this? I didn't really have acid reflux problems before. Maybe once every 6 months.
  10. Oh, it was acid. I have seen my surgeon, and I'm on new meds and the problem is gone. Acid symptoms can be painful hungry pain, and that is exactly what I had. That is gone with new meds.
  11. I have been on solids since day 4, as per my program. I have puked 3 times, and I'm 12 weeks post op. Once was because I didn't chew the bit well enough. I have to chew everything until it's like puree in my mouth. The other two times was because my stomach was not ready to get of Nexium. It's very important that you keep the water times. I have to drink 10-15min before I eat, just to clean out my stomach so to speak. And then I have to wait 30 min after. Chew your food very good, and take your time eating. But no longer than 20min.

    TMI**** Women ONLY****

I was on mine. No tampons for me, but a pad and mesh, both gone when I woke up. No catheter for me either. Strangely enough, I didn't have as heavy flow as I should have had. No spillage. They get you up and walking pretty quick, and you can do what you need then.
  13. It's just your body adjusting to everything. You will have stalls, no ifs or buts about it. If you have lost 20 in 2 weeks, You have lost 20 in 2 weeks!!!!!!!!! Think about that. When was the last time you lost 20 in 2 weeks? Give your body time, and as long as changes are happening in your body, it's normal. I was on a 2 week stall and lost a whole clothing size.

How do you reach your fluid and protein goal?

I didn't have the sleeve, but the RNY, and I drank pretty normal after just a week out. I didn't take big gulps, but drank small sips all the time. Not micro small, but like half a mouth full. As long as it's not making you uncomfortable, and you don't drink a lot at once, you should be fine. Water passes through your stomach pretty quick.

    Soooooo disappointed!

Don't give up. I was on the cancellation list, and my surgery got moved up from April 18th to March 20th. Just make sure you remind them now and then that you are there.

    Triathlete

I'm a triathlete...or was, but will be again. I had back surgery in December 2015 and haven't been able to run since. It's because of my back i ended up with WLS. I hope that I'll one day be able to do it again. I eat low carb or keto when I was training and racing. worked wonders. Gave me plenty of fuel. I'm not super fast, but my half marathon time is 2:14 on keto. I usually eat nuts, cheese during training and race, had an early breakfast with eggs and bacon, avocado, cheese. That was before wls though.
  17. I have been on solids since day 4, and already back then we could eat up to 5 oz. But in volume, not weight. I never did in the beginning, but I have for the past 4-6 weeks. I'm 12 weeks post op.

    Recovery time?

Usually they don't recommend running a half until you have about 6 months to a year of running in your legs. That is to prevent injury and for it to be a great experience. If it's a half where you can walk for a lot of it, I would say go for it. If there is a time limit, which there often are, I would say wait. What you can do is start running now. You'll have to start over again after surgery, but you'll have some running in your legs. Also, after surgery, your body will be under a lot of stress, training for a half is putting it through more stress. I personally would go for the sleeve and postpone the half. I'm a triathlete and best half time is 2h 14min (2nd half). Can't run right now due to back surgery.
  19. @nettajlong I didn't have acid reflux before surgery. It's something that has come after surgery. As for side effects, have you been tested for osteoporosis? It's a very common side effect from long term use of acid reducers. After trying to reduce my Nexium and that didn't work, I went back on it for a week. Today I started pantoprazole to see if it works better than Nexium. If that doesn't work, the next thing is to remove all dairy to see if I have gotten an intolerance since surgery.
  20. Not sure if it will be available for international users ( ex. Europe), but if so, please have measurements like 1 gram and 100 grams. Nothing is by portions over here, everything is by 100 grams. Same goes for liquid, ml, dl and liters. The option of setting all values ourselves. By that I mean that we are all in different programs, so we have different guidelines that we have to follow. Some have to drink 30 min before eating, I have to drink 10-15min before eating. Some can have that many carbs, others can have more or less. Also, when you add your own product, which I assume, coming from Europe, I'll have to do a lot in the beginning. Being able to edit if I have made a mistake and not have to add it all over again.
  21. My cholesterol went from over 330 down to just over 100 at my 6 weeks check up. My next check up with blood work will be in September. I'm 10 weeks out.
  22. @Redmaxx if you don't have any problems, there is no need for you to take it. Right after surgery, I think almost everyone takes it for a while, anywhere from 8 weeks to a year so things can heal. I'm only 9 weeks post op, and my stomach is not ready to get off apparently.
  23. @neon07734 Wow, you have really been unlucky. With you just being 1 month post op, isn't it a little early to stop the meds? Things are still healing. I'm 9 weeks out, but most people take it for 6 months. Hopefully it will get better for both of us. @Di_ I'm glad you have been able to find something that helps, and hopefully things will get better. I have also noticed that Skyr/quark is no problem. I'll see how it goes in about 3 week. Hopefully it just needs a little more time.
  24. @Berry78 yeah, I have seen people who are on it for 6 months. My program is 8 weeks. If the next 3-4 weeks doesn't help, my surgeon wants to see me. I found it very unusual as well, and good to know it's for really long term. BTW, we have the exact same surgery date
  25. @Sadiebug only thing I'm worried about is the long term side effects like brittle bone. I guess 3-4 months is not really that long. Thanks.
