Got the green light at my psych eval. Now Dr Dutta will look at my file and if he gives me the approval, I get to schedule surgery! WOOHOO!

It's not that I can't cut carbs, but you shouldn't cut all your carbs. Your brain needs carbs. When I started, I had a carb with ever meal but a little bit. 1/4 cup of rice with dinner, one serving of wheat thins with lunch and a piece of toast with dinner. From there I started taking them out of dinner, sometimes I will have them with lunch and I always have a carb with breakfast. You can have carbs just not excessive carbs. Are you counting your calories? Start adding a little more exercise and make sure your calories are around 12-1400 and you should see the weight come off pretty quickly!

    I think I am a hypocrite!

I'm not telling anyone either. Not even my parents. My boyfriend is the only one that knows. But I have been working out and eating healthy and so no one should really be surprised that I'm losing weight. I will be talking to people and say stuff like "since I have been losing weight...." thinking that they might be scared to bring it up but I still get no response so I'm like damn I guess they really can't see a difference.

I'm anxious. Not really for the appointment itself but for what happens after the appointment. That is where you officially find out if you get approved or not. They will determine if I need any additional tests and if I am ready for surgery. If everything goes well I should be able to schedule surgery soon.

If you lose the weight relatively quickly, this summer is very possible. The waiting is also dependent on if they hire a new psychologist soon or not. They have been shorthanded for a while so I would hope that they are getting close to finding someone new. Other kaisers were helping out by doing some of the psych evals for fremont but last I heard, they pulled back and said they couldn't help anymore. I didn't start losing weight until a week AFTER I met with my surgeon(I met him the day before Christmas eve so enjoyed my holidays before getting serious). I lost 40lbs in my first 7 weeks. Once 1/1/17 hit, I went straight down to 1200cals. I have not had a soda, carbonated beverage, caffine, alcohol, fast food etc since. I added in a lot of the staples that they say are helpful post surgery, Greek yogurt, string cheese, eggs, etc and made sure i got my protein in from a lot of different sources. You could probably cut carbs and lose quicker but I didn't. I went high protein, low carb. I tracked my protein intake but not my carb intake, just kinda avoided excess carbs. I still have a piece of toast every morning but I don't usually have a carb with dinner. 2 thing to remember. 1, the most important part pre op is to build the right habits. A lot of people who do extreme dieting to lose weight preop quickly, really struggle with post op. You are dropping to 1200 cals, you will lose weight quickly regardless if you cut out all the carbs or not. 2, you have to maintain and continue to lose weight throughout the whole process. Especially because they are backed up, you can't gain weight after you hit goal. If they don't see you under your goal weight and continuing your weight loss progress, they won't approve the surgery. So however you decide to lose weight, it has to be sustainable.

You will actually choose your surgeon after orientation. You have to choose your surgeon and have an appointment with them to get your weight loss goal. Yeah it hasn't been a terrible wait but it's frustrating when you expect a certain time frame and it gets delayed. I wish they would have told me they were behind so I could have been ready for the delay. Friday night group is tomorrow 6-8p.m. 39400 Paseo Padre Pkwy Fremont, CA. Niles building, 2nd floor.

Also 10% is not for everyone. Just depends on what your surgeon decides. If you are on the border of the 40% bmi they usually only ask you to lose 5%. I don't want to discourage you guys on timing but right now psych evals are completely booked in April and going into May. Realistically, if you lose the weight quickly you might get a July-ish surgery. They are down a psychologist so things are a little backed up. I only tell you guys that because I had an expectation that things would move very quickly. I hit my goal weight in February so I expected a March surgery. Now I'm looking at early May.

    May??

Hey guys! I'm going through the Fremont kaiser as well. I'm a little farther in the process as my psych eval is tomorrow. Let me know if you have any question. They also want you to go to one support group meeting. The Fremont Support Group is actually meeting tomorrow from 6-8pm if you guys are interested. All of the surgeons have very good reputations at fremont. I personally have Dr Dutta and I feel so comfortable with him. You can pick your surgeon but I just went with the first available appointment and got Dr Dutta. It has already been said but I can't stress it enough. START NOW! They take your highest recorded weight within the last year so if you start losing now you can speed up the process.

Weight is also a pretty sensitive topic so a lot of people don't want to ask. Like they don't want to offend you if you aren't actually losing weight. My boyfriend and I were talking to our landlord last night who knows I am pre-op for WLS. He kept bring up that my boyfriend lost weight and I was kinda hinting at my weight loss and I just got the feeling that he felt so uncomfortable mentioning anything to me about my weight.

    Pissed Off and Rebelling

Success of surgery is not dependent on the time you are forced to wait before surgery but in the success of implementing the habits before surgery and dealing with the underlying causes that had an individual eating excessively in the first place. Some patients go through the program for years and don't use the time to implement the needed changes, other implement them immediately and work on their issues. Your success is dependent on you and not on a preconceived time that an insurance company deems fit. I said before, my program actually doesn't require you to wait 6 months or take any nutrition classes. It just requires you to prove you are committed and are following the lifestyle with mandatory weight loss. Why is my program and the individuals part of it so successful if they didnt have to go through nutrition classes and required waiting periods? I have lost the weight and my dietician is beyond happy with the changes in my food and routine. My program is also short handed right now causing a delay in surgeries. I came on here originally saying that I actually wished that they had some classes to offer since I am now being forced to wait longer but no I am not happy that my surgery is being delayed. I responded to the post that becuase people like me are impatient means that we are "emotionally immature" which is a ridiculous claim.

Except if you are already emotionally and physically prepared then waiting is kinda pointless and extremely frustrating. As the other poster said, you don't know how long people have been preparing and educating themselves or what their knowledge level is on nutrition. When I met my surgeon, I was told that I would be getting surgery in March. I have read, researched, implemented all the changes needed, lost double the required weight, bought everything I would need and have prepared more than you could possibly know. Now March turned into April and April turned into May and May might turn into June. For you to blame my frustration on "emotional immaturity" is quite ridiculous.

I'm pre-op but down 50lbs and am waiting for people to notice. Still hasn't happened. My boyfriend keeps saying there is a huge noticeable difference but it's his job to say nice crap like that lol. I even asked my mom if she saw a difference and she said "not really, but keep up the good work." Gee thanks mom!
  15. I wish I could. We are required to go to only our psychologist.

I also feel like sometimes I want to just say "F it." So far the easiest part of this process has been losing weight and I have lost double the weight that was required and feel like I'm no closer to getting the surgery. Dealing with the program and their ridiculous waiting for no reason is what has been challenging. Almost feel like it would be easier to do it on my own at this point but I need to think about the long run and in the long run, surgery is my best chance of life long success.

    Pissed Off and Rebelling

I have mixed feelings on this. My program didn't require any classes but had mandatory weight loss and a 3+ months wait after you lose the weight before you got the surgery. For me, since I had to wait anyways I wish they would have had classes so I could learn and be part of a program. My program just kinda throws you out there. I have had no communication with them since December. I hit my goal weight at the beginning of February and I am projected to get surgery in early May. Granted I would rather not have the classes AND not have to wait forever after I met all their requirements. But since I have the wait and no communication, I wish there was something more they provided.
  18. I feel you on this. My program lost their psychologist so I am getting delayed 6 weeks while they are working to get us appointments at other hospitals. I should have already had my surgery by now and I still don't even have a date

Looking for a buddy Norcal Bay Area

Where are you and where are you having surgery?
  21. bekah7482

    Feeling Discouraged

My surgeon recommended the bypass too. I am not comfortable with the bypass and just said no thank you, I want the sleeve and he was ok with it. Ultimately you need to be comfortable with your decision and if you are not comfortable with the bypass just tell him that and get the sleeve.

Unfortunately still no update here. I keep calling my program and am told the person who handles psych evals is "not available" and will call me back but they never do. Super frustrated and I still have 3 weeks till my scheduled psych eval
