  1. Hi! I'm an ER RN and I went back to work yesterday for my first 12 hr shift after 9 days off for my surgery. I have plenty of helpful coworkers that are more than happy to help with lifting and pulling for me when needed. My surgeon told me last week at my post op appt that I'm restricted to 20lbs for a month. I was worried about my energy level and being able to endure the shift because I've just been so easily exhausted but somehow I made it through and actually felt close to normal once I got moving. The hardest part was having to watch everyone eat delicious takeout while you're sipping your Water and Protein [emoji51] Good luck to you!

Thank you so much. I really needed to hear from someone who is also a nurse because as you know our shifts can be very hard. Thank you for your response.

  2. My thoughts are it is temporary. It is doable and necessary. I am scheduled Wednesday, April 19, and am surviving the preop diet. I chew sugar free gum to help. I also make sure to take deep breaths and breath when I find myself wanting to eat out of boredom.

    Temporary!!! Best of luck!

Thank you so much for that advice. You are so right! Its only temporary. Good luck with your surgery!!!

  3. It helped me so much to take the pre-op class. There is such a low complication rate, especially when sticking to your plan. Try and calm down and think more on the logical side instead of the emotional. You are the only one who can ultimately decide, but try not to psyche yourself out too much! I'm May 1st, so I'm in the boat with you!

Thank you very much. I will try to focus more on the positive and not the negative.

  4. My surgery date is May 1st and at first I was feeling the same way. As soon as I finalized the last of the plans I got extremely nervous and it lasted for a whole week. At one point I was thinking that I was going to worry myself into an ulcer or something and then I wont be physically able to have it done. Luckily that only lasted about a week and now Im more excited than anything. I dont even know what changed. I just woke up one day and felt different. Hopefully you will get over it as well. I agree with the others about praying and follow your instincts. Im guessing its natural to worry about what can go wrong, but maybe you can think more about how your life can change for the better instead. That should help you calm down.
We can certainly do this together since we are in similar situations!

Yes Thank you so much!!!! Im May2nd so we can keep in touch. Do u have instagram? Im vsg_melissaadriana

  5. Do what feels right for you. Give it to God. You can stop at anytime right up to when you are getting wheeled into the room. Take a breath, dont dwell on what can go wrong, instead spend your time on what can go right. Imagine how good you will feel as you lose weight. Think of all the fun shopping you will do. I just finished my 3rd month of 6 month pre op, and all i am focused on is getting to the day. I gave it to God, to open the road and clear the obstacles, if its right it will happen and I will have peace.
I too get scared along the way. I had a colostomy 5 yrs ago and got it reversed. I remember when i read all the things that could go wrong i almost freaked out. I decided not to focus on what could go wrong because to get to point B , I had to go through point A. So as John Wayne says, "courage is being afraid but saddling up anyways". I cowboyed , rather cowgirled up, and went for it. I felt it was the right time. When I awoke from the surgery, i found out I didnt get the reversal because they found a large cyst that ate my ovary and fallopian tube and was making its way to my uterus. I had no idea it was there, no pain, nothing. Going in for that reversal was a Godsend. I had to wait another 10 months to try again for the reversal. It went as easy as pie.
So i am going with my gut. I want to do this and i feel its right and that is what i am doing. If God has other plans He will Detour me.
Have faith, trust what you feel, listen to no one but your inner voice and pray. You will find your answer.

Thank you your so right. This feels right to me so im just gonna listen to my inner voice. Give it all up to God and lean on him for strength. Ill focus on the positive I love shopping so I was so happy when you said that. Its like Im worrying so much I have forgotten about the good things that could happen. Thank you. I will have courage like you said cowgirl up!

  6. Guys,

Im about three weeks away from surgery. May 2nd is the big day and I'm starting to have a lot of anxiety. Starting to think maybe I shouldn't do this. This had been something that I have wanted for a long time. Im starting to read about complications which I already knew but now its really starting to hit me. Most patients have a high possibility of major complication in the first 30 days after surgery (thats what I read on one website). Im scared and thinking maybe I should just back out. However, im 28 years old. 5'4 260 and I have BMI of 44.5. So Im wondering if I do not do this will I ever lose weight? Will I always regret it? Will I wonder how my life would of been different? What if I do it and I have a serious complication? Will I regret having the procedure? Anyways please help calm my nerves guys. I need help. What have been some of your concerns?

  7. I'm sure he does a great job and you'll be very happy with the outcome. Just follow the program and you'll be fine. For me, the gas was the worst part. The posts here about what to bring to the hospital were so useful. If you haven't seen those, you might want to do a search. Having an extension cord for phone charging was key. Also having a pillow in the car for the ride home was a huge help. One of my friends recommended having small cups of liquids and Jello ready to go, like the paper or plastic cups you might use in a bathroom. It worked great for me, especially just being able to eyeball portions. Good luck!!

Thank you very much. I never even thought of bringing an extwnsion cord or pillow thank you for the advice im trying to make a list of everything to bring.

  8. When I was researching south Florida doctors, his name and hospital ever came up. I used Dr. Wizman in Margate. My surgery was supposed to be at Northwest but he had a falling out the day before, so it was moved to Coral Springs. I live in Delray. The patients in the support groups are fantastic. The nurse that runs the general support group, Sandy, is wonderful. The RD that has the monthly lecture comes from Cleveland Clinic and she's amazing, too. I also strongly considered CC but it was just too far and their support groups are very inconvenient from a time perspective. I wish you the best with your search. Let me know if you have any questions.

Thank you very much. I live in sunrise. Thank you for answering my questions. The doctor that im doing my sleeve with Dr. Matei works for Memorial Healthcare and I heard he is really good. So im gonna stick with him but thank you.

  9. I'm a nurse too. I do 8 hr shifts, but literally stand the entire time and push a lot of stretchers. I work in endoscopy - not a "heavy" job but very fast paced.
I'm booked off for 3 weeks, but the way my rotation works I'll be 3 1/2 weeks post op when I go back. It this point (day 14), I think I'll be fine. My incisions are healing well and I don't have a lot of fatigue. My main concern is getting my fluids in when I go back to work. I can only drink on breaks.
I'll keep you posted how it goes for me! When is your surgery date?

Thank you very much for your reply. My surgery is May 2nd. I work three days a week but I work 12hr shifts and very fast paced. Sometimes we dont even have time to drink Water. I I lift alot, sometimes 10lb babies. My job is very active sometimes we dont even get lunch so im just worried how will I get Protein and fluids as well. Let me know how your pot op recovery goes.

  10. Could you request 3 weeks with the understanding that you could come back after 2, or does the scheduling not allow for that? I returned to work after 2 1/2 weeks but I have a desk job. It was mainly being tired and not having a lot of energy that made the first week rough. If you're used to being on your feet and moving around it might not be so bad. It's really hard to give solid advice as we all handle post-op life differently. I've seen some say they wish they could have taken more than 4 weeks off and others that were back to work in only a few days.

Our doc mandated 2 weeks minimum. He wanted 4 weeks but told them there was no way I could with work.

No I would have to request now either way two or three weeks so they can have sufficient staffing if im out. I dont wanna be out too long but I also dont wanna come back not feeling up to work so hard I spend 12hrs a day on my feet.
