  1. I'm having the bypass on March 16th. I've had many of those same fears. As of today, my only fear is that I chose the best surgery for me. I work in Healthcare and have had a lot of opinions offered to me that I should do the sleeve instead. Anyway, you have 3 more months to let this absorb. You should consider getting 1 on 1 counseling to work with your addiction. The surgery will help you lose weight but not forget if you don't change your habits in the meantime. (I'm speaking to myself too!) As for your child, I think you should cook what you can eat for dinner. Get him in the habit of not having grains so often. He can have whole grain toast or cereal for Breakfast. To me, I'm not forcing my husband or 5 boys to change, but I'm encouraging healthier eating habits and only cooking ONE meal for dinner! My kids have actually expressed appreciation! Good luck!

  2. I thought I would be having surgery in jan. I finally got my surgery date today and it's March 16th. Way farther out than I hoped but I was going crazy waiting day by day! I kept calling the clinic everyday, I bet she finally worked on my case just to get me off her back! Lol I tried not to be annoying! Now, to get through a whole more month!

  3. "Lord give me patience and HURRY IT UP!" I have know idea who said that but the phrase stuck with me. Lol. I'm waiting not so patiently to get the call that I'm approved and can schedule a surgery date!! In the meantime, I get on here to read the good, the bad, the ugly and mostly to see all of your before and after pics! After tonight's reading about someone's dreaded stall, a thought sparked. How often should we way ourselves? I know when I did weight watchers (all 700 times) I was told to way once a week. Is it hard not to become obsessed with the scale? Also, another question. Any veterans on here? I understand most people keep their weight off 1 year, what 3 years? 5 years? I know, I know, I know it's different for everyone and it depends on the lifestyle CHANGE. As much excited as I am for positive, healthy changes in my future, I have a little spec of worry that I might fail just like all my previous attempts.

  4. I would tell them that's what I used to think too, before I looked into it, and that sadly there is no such thing as an easy way out. WLS just evens the playing field, so that people with chronic obesity can have a reasonable chance at maintaining weight loss. It doesn't magically make it happen, as the 40% of people who don't maintain it can attest. However, compared to the more than 99% who fail with "traditional" methods alone, I'll take it!

People who talk about "the easy way out" may not even realize that they are equating a disease with a moral failing. Science doesn't bear that out, and you shouldn't buy into it either. If you had hyperthyroidism and needed your thyroid removed, would you feel guilty about taking the easy way out? Or would you try to use will power to even out your hormones?

Chronic obesity is a misunderstood disease that requires lifelong management. But, hell, if there was an easy way, I'd take it in a heartbeat. There is no prize in this life for people who beat their heads against a wall.

  5. I have cigna and went through the nutrition office that knew all the requirements (everything you've stated). You can use your pcp but he needs to state everything cigna requires and it has to be with the last 12 months. I'm waiting on my approval now! Everything was submitted on mon of this week. So nervous, anxious, excited, impatient!!

  6. Honestly a lot of people are feeling just as self conscious. You are your own worst critic. I don't remember who said this but here are some great quotes:

"It's none of your business what others think of you"

"A slow half mile is still a half mile. Getting off the couch starts with one foot in front of the other".

  7. I told my coworkers about it. Most at first were not supportive. I explained why and some have given me their support. I also work in the medical field so people are going to start questioning me once they notice a change. I figured I'll just say it like it is rather than try to hide it. It's my choice and my consequences rather good or bad not theirs. I don't have a surgery date yet, waiting on insurance approval!!

  8. I'm 33 years old, 5' tall, and weighing in at 220.

We submitted to insurance just waiting on my dates.

I'm 35, 5'2 and 220lb. I had my consult on tue. My doc makes you go through all the NUT counciling, psych eval and everything your insurance requires before you get the consult. I am hoping they have already submitted my stuff to the ins. They told me to plan on anywhere from 3 to 5 weeks. I'm so anxious! What surgery are you having? I'm having the RNY.

  10. I gained weight (about 10#'s) to qualify for surgery. I have been bouncing around 240 and 220 for over 2 years. I was at 243 at the my first visit to bariatric department. 238 when I met with surgeon. He gave me a surgery goal weight of 227. I am currently at 225.1. I am now waiting for surgery date.

  11. I am private pay, and the threshold is BMI 30. Research I've seen says they are getting very good results with the sleeve and people at BMI 30-35. I wonder if the insurance threshold will continue to drop over the years--it has so far. After 40 years of gaining and losing, with the ceiling going up each time, I finally stopped fighting and let the last 5 pounds come on, knowing I would then qualify. I'm sure most people would say I don't need this. Mostly because I'm fortunate to store fat all over my body and it's not as obvious. Until pain in my back, knees, ankles reminds me I'm carrying an extra 60-80 pounds around again.

I know the surgery is only a tool, and I have appointments to start work with a psychologist and a nutritionist. And I'll be attending support group meetings and continuing to read on this forum. Much to learn.

One of the biggest reasons I want the surgery is for "the tool" I am very active in sports and fitness but due to all the weight it takes a huge toll on me physically. I think my physical fitness is what keeps my blood pressure down. I am excited to turn a new leaf and gain control. I'm hoping to have surg in jan, as I finally meet with the surgeon

  12. Let me explain better. For the past 2 years I've continued to gain weight. I'm very active and suffer multiple problems from the extra pounds. My bmi is a 40 but when I first started going to the bariatric doc my bmi was 38. So yes, I weighted my pockets down to get the weight up on the scale that day. However, my weight is steadily climbing. I just want to get the help now before my body suffers any further problems. I'm in my 30s and where I'm on the lower end of the scale, I'm still morbidly obese and need to make changes NOW so I can be around for my family. I do appreciate all your concern.

  13. Has anyone gained weight intentionally to qaulify for surgery?

I've done nutritional counseling, had my psychiatric evaluation and finally go meet the surgeon next month. Originally I thought I would qualify with a 35 BMI and 2 co morbidities. It turns out I don't have sleep apnea although it was highly suspected. So I stuffed my pockets full of batteries, wore the heaviest jewelry I own and a few other things to get my weight up so I would hit the bmi of 40.

This is stupid, trying to gain weight! The past few months I've allowed myself to eat whatever I want. I feel disgusting and hardly recognize myself. I keep reminding myself of my ultimate goal.

My worry is that now instead of getting mentally prepared for the lifestyle changes, I've just gotten myself further addicted to food and sugar.

Has anyone been there, done that? I know it's going to be hell the first week or two just detoxing from all of the poison (candy) I've been stuffing my face with. Is there anything that helps so I won't cave?

    Thanks in advance!
