  1. Hello!

I was in a similar situation for my surgery. I checked in at 6am and was the first surgery of the day. You will do fine. Pre op they keep you busy with questions, consent forms, IV insertion and so on. I was in for 2 nights 3 days and had no visitors. I was far from home too. I was too uncomfortable to worry about entertaining people. It's important for you to get up and walk as much as possible. It helps immensely with the gas pain. You'll be tired and sleep in between walking. Just focus on yourself and you'll do great. It's normal to be nervous. Keep us posted how you do! Good luck!

  2. I had RNY and had gas issues for about 7-10 days. Remember you just had major surgery only 3 days ago. You will have pain getting up from your incisions because they cut through muscle and moving aggravates that. Your best bet is to walk, walk, walk. That eases pain and moves gas around and out quicker. Let yourself heal and don't over exert yourself to soon. You got this! You will feel better every day.

Hi all, so I have one month left with the dietician before I can see the surgeon and although I have drastically cut back on smoking cigarettes, I still find myself smoking a few when I stress on daily life things. Has anyone else had this problem and does anyone know if it will have any effects on my surgery itself? My goal is always to quit and I have gone from a pack a day to maybe 5 cigarettes for the whole week

Almost all surgeons require you to be tobacco free, sometimes up to 6 months pre op. Nicotine hinders healing and causes stomach ulcers after WLS. I quit in September 2016 and my surgery was 6/21/17. I quit cold turkey and have not touched one since, but I understand where you are coming from. It's hard to break.

My surgeon had me do a nicotine urine test 2 days prior to surgery and if it was positive my surgery would have been cancelled. Some surgeons do a test at the beginning of your journey and prior to surgery to be safe.

Good luck quitting! It's for the best! You can do this!

  4. Good luck tomorrow! I'm almost a month out from my RNY. When I got to the hospital I had to register and then go to the outpatient surgery floor. I checked in there and waited to go back into pre op. Once in there I had to strip naked, put on the lovely hospital gown, and get on the gurney to wait. A nurse came in and started my IV and I was given saline and an antibiotic. Anesthesia came in and had me sign consent and explained what they were to do. Then, a few minutes later I was wheeled into the OR, moved on the table, and went to sleep [emoji42].
Afterward I was groggy for a few hours, but slowly woke up and started my walking!
Walk as soon as you can and keep [emoji1435] walking it really helps the gas!
Good luck tomorrow! You'll do fabulous! Keep us posted!

  5. Hello,

So i am a newwwwbie! i just got a call from Kaiser in So Cal saying that before they even sign me up for the orientation i need to get a nicotine test done first. and the results can take a week. Did anyone else have to do this first?

I had to do one 2 days before surgery, not in the beginning. On here, you'll learn every surgeon is different in their approach to WLS. Good luck! [emoji256]

I was told that we had to give up diet soda before the operation. I thought I would give myself until the last month to enjoy it but at four months, I was just told that I need to be off of them now. Have I messed up by not stopping it before now? Do you think I can continue drinking them for another month? My doctor says now but I'm curious as to what other instructions are out there. In the scheme of things this isn't a large issue but it is a burning one for me!

To be successful on this journey, you need to listen to your doctor and no one else's. Every doctor is different for many different reasons. I stopped my ginger ale 6 months prior to surgery. I don't miss it. I was told to stop at my information seminar, so I did.

I agree that you need to read up on diet soda and aspartame. Aspartame is a poison and can cause numerous illnesses.

Your best bet is to listen to your doc and quit now. Withdrawal sucks, but better now, then post op when you already feel yucky. Remember this is a lifestyle change for the better. This is the time to let go of some bad habits.

    Good luck!

  7. Hello and welcome! You will meet lots of people that know how you feel and are on the same journey. It's great you have your husbands support too. This is a total lifestyle change we have to make.
Feel free to message me if I can help you out. I'm 3 weeks post op. I'll help with what I can!

  8. After surgery I have no appetite or cravings. I am only on puréeds right now and eat because I have to. It's not bad at all. You'll have to work on the food obsession, try to realize when you are really hungry and when it's just head hunger. It has been easier so far for me because I just don't feel hungry.
You'll get through this! Keep your eye on the prize! [emoji4]

  9. I agree totally that this is in no way the easy way out. This will be a hard journey, but you can do it. I'm 3 weeks post op myself and never thought I would be where I am now. It seemed to take forever!
Just listen to your doctor and follow their program to the T. Every surgeon is different, as you will find out on here, but do what your doc tells you.
Good luck and keep us posted! [emoji16]

  10. Hello all!
I am a 37 year old male from Rochester, NY. I have looked into bariatric surgery, and feel that I could greatly benefit from this tool. I'm currently 6'3, 410 pounds, with sleep apnea and high blood pressure....
I attended a bariatric seminar (the first step in getting surgery through the hospital here), and am currently waiting on a phone call from them to schedule my first appointments. In the meantime, what sort of things can I do now to prep myself for this journey? I know the dieticians will have a plan for me to move forward, but I'm open to doing things in the meantime to prep myself, both physically and mentally.

Look forward to hearing some advice!

Congratulations on your first step in what will be a life changing journey for you!
I'm only a few weeks post op gastric bypass and see changes happening already.
A few things I did to prep myself after I went to my seminar were:
Stopped all carbonated beverages because they are not allowed after surgery.
Started drinking 64 ounces of Water a day.
Slowly started a walking routine that I got up to 2 miles a day.
Stopped all caffeinated beverages because they can hinder healing.
    Totally cut out sweets.
Started seeing my primary doctor to start supervised weight loss with monthly visits. Most insurances require 3, 6, or 12 month supervised diets to see if you can comply and lose some weight.
    And quit smoking.

Every program is different for WLS, so always check with your doctor if doing these things are ok for you.
Good luck to you and keep us posted!

Hi! I just had RNY on 6/26/17...just wondering how much weight you have lost so far...I'm only 10 pounds down but not worried following Drs orders(sw 230 cw 220)..

Sent from my Nexus 7 using BariatricPal mobile app

I'm down 20 pounds as of today. I'm limited on exercise because I have a broken foot, so I'm losing slower than I'd like. I'm looking to join a gym near me with a pool so I can get some exercise that way. I'm following my docs orders too.

I am brand new to the group and most concerned with getting enough Protein and Vitamins in a day post op! How is everyone managing this?

    Hello!

I'm 2 1/2 weeks post op here. It is not easy to get in your Water and Protein every day, but you have to be vigilant about it. What I do is keep a Premier Protein shake and a bottle of water in front of me all the time. I set a timer on my phone for every 15 minutes. I have a 1 ounce shot glass I fill every 15 minutes alternating water and shake. I fill the glass and sip constantly for 15 minutes. It works, but it gets tedious.

My Vitamins are chewable and I take them 2-3 times a day. They are easy to get down and I just wait 5 minutes after having them to sip again.

You'll get in your own groove once you get used to it. It's hard, but feasible.

I'm now at 2 ounces an hour and it's becoming easier every day.

Good luck to you! Let me know how you are doing! Feel free to pm me!

You'll do great. I'm a little over 2 weeks post op and feel good. The first 48 hours were very painful for me. The best thing for it was getting up and walking. Walk as much as you can. You won't want to, but it's the best thing for you. Walk, walk, walk! That's my best advice! Good luck! Keep us posted.

ok awesome will do ! hows things going for you? any gas pain, is food staying down are you able to start working out yet?

Things are going good. I still have pain in my left side, but my doctor said that's normal. I had gas pain for about 8 days and walking is what helped that the most. I'm on puréed foods now and so far no issues. I'm limited on my diet per my doctor. It's a small list of purées, but it's not too bad. I can't have mashed potatoes, puddings, thick Soups, certain veggies, and certain fruits. I'm allowed to do cardio now, but no weight lifting yet. I'm limited on my cardio due to a broken foot, so I'm going to check out a gym with aquatic classes for my cardio.

met with my surgeon April 20, going with the RNY, I have completed almost everything, I have my last nutrition class/weigh in on july 13 then my surgeon will send info to my insurance to complete process hoping to have procedure by august im in Houston tx!

I just had RNY on 6/21/17. I'm in Copperas Cove, Texas. I'm right near Fort Hood. Good luck with your surgery and I hope you get your date in August! Keep us posted!

  16. I've just been in for my pre-admission screening (ECG, bloods etc) and as a result my surgeon, who called me at 8pm, has decided to postpone my operation. It seems I have high blood pressure (I never have before, but then I've put on a lot of weight recently) and that combined with a couple of other risk factors has made them a little nervous. The nerves come, partly, from my surgeon's usual anaesthetist (who is an internationally renowned specialist on anaesthetics and obesity) who is on holiday.
So I now have three weeks to go before the Op, and have been put on medication to reduce my blood pressure.
I have mixed feelings. I feel less anxious knowing I'll be in a) a better state and b ) will have the A-team working on me. That said it does feel disappointing and I need to get my head round my new timeline. At least my pre-op diet has been successful (26lbs so far) and is, with a little imagination, pretty easy (I made seared cod with an asian salad this evening). So the next three weeks should mean more diet and more weight loss. With the gains I've made so far I've already started to ride my bike again, so a few weeks of that in the English summer is quite motivating.
Oh well. All for the best I suppose!

It's good they caught it now and are dealing with it. It's better to be safe than sorry. Like you said you'll have the A team when it's time. Look how far you've come to get here. Two more weeks will fly by before you know it!
    Good luck!

  17. Pre op diet is not the best, but it helps with surgery. I felt much better with having my all liquid diet after surgery. I felt much more prepared. I'm only 2 weeks post op and just started mushies 2 days ago and the all liquids was not bad at all.

Congratulations on your date! You can do this! Keep us posted and feel free to post or message me if I can help!

Appreciate it all! Glad to see the support. Picked up my Vitamins tonight. Flinstones, B12, and ordered some calcium citrate meltables from Amazon. I'm supposed to get Vitamin D but I could only find like D3 and other D's but no straight Vitamin D. Other than that I should be good right guys?

The vitamin D I was told to take is D3. D3 helps Calcium be absorbed. Check the calcium you got. It may have the D3 already in it. I got calcium chews and they have the D3 in them, so no need for a separate chewable. Otherwise, I'm taking a chewable flinstone 2x a day and B12 once a week and also a Biotin dissolvable.

Good luck again! You'll do great!
