    Not losing :(

You aren't alone. I felt the same way. I started at 377. Lost 51 lbs on my own and had surgery at 326. At 2.5 months I lost about 29 lbs. I had the sleeve and I am still glad that is what I chose. But it is slower than the RNY. I'm now at 278 and that one more lb for 100 total is so elusive. I've noticed a pattern. I lose very little for two weeks before my menstrual cycle. Then once my period starts I drop faster for a week or two. So, I know for me it is very hormonal. The non scale victories like smaller clothing, dashing up the stairs, seatbelts that fit, getting my ring sized, and more are very motivating. So...keep on your plan. Keep checking in here. You aren't alone. You are doing great. Sent from my SM-G920V using BariatricPal mobile app

    What am I doing wrong?

You aren't doing anything wrong. Our bodies are traumatized by the surgery. There is a lot of healing going on. My DR had me at 60 g protein and 60 oz liquids. If you don't like the protein shakes have you tried the protein waters? They come in various flavors. You can buy some pre mixed or you can buy powder to mix in. I've found that my weight loss can be slow and then boom I'll get some big drops. I'm 5 months post op and have lost 47 lbs since surgery. I lost 51 lbs on my own before surgery, so I'm at 98 lbs down total and so close to that 100 lb mark! It is slower than i thought it would be, but the physical changes are amazing. I feel great. And I'm getting into smaller and smaller sizes. HW 377 SW 326 CW 279 Sent from my SM-G920V using BariatricPal mobile app

    How much time off?

Jenn...i go from pleasant hill to montgomery. New trains start at PH and I often back track to civic center to get a seat going home. The jostling and balancing on the wobbly train was a concern. I just made sure I had time to wait for next train if needed. Sent from my SM-G920V using BariatricPal mobile app

    Bruising after procedure

I had some bruising but nothing like your photo. I didn't find the incision site or bruising to be painful. The itching got extreme but not pain. For me it was more pain/discomfort when I sat or stood...like a major ab workout. Sent from my SM-G920V using BariatricPal mobile app

    How much time off?

I'm an attorney as well. I have an hour commute to go from house to BART to office. Then I'm attached to the phone and computer all day. I took 2 weeks off after VSG. I worked from home week 3. I started commuting to office week 4. I needed a nap by 3pm. I was exhausted in week 3 and week 4. A little less so in weeks 5 and 6. Then I got to eat real food again and it changed everything. I traveled for work in week 7 and then started back with trainer week 8. For me I think it was more about the low calorie liquid/puree/soft foods than the actual surgery itself. Normal?

I'm approaching 4 months post sleeve and I'm able to eat most things. For me around week 8 things got more normalized. I still have to deal with occasional discomfort particularly if I eat more volume. I expect to have to deal with that for most of this first year. But that is what I signed up for...to retrain myself on how much to eat and what to eat. A couple years out it is much more about our habits than the surgery. As for going out to eat...I have been out to eat with friends family and co-workers. I've had a couple of comments about being finished already with half of my meal or more untouched but that is about it. If this is a person you consider a friend then you need to have a chat with them. Tell them that the comments about what to eat and how much etc make you uncomfortable and ask them to please stop. Otherwise you will not go out to eat with them. Personally, if someone did that to me l don't think I would keep them in my life, especially if after the talk they still couldn't keep their thoughts to themselves. 10. I don't know why...good question. I specifically went for the sleeve because it did remove part of the stomach and left the rest in tact. I can get an endoscopy and still get everything checked. My gastroenterologist said that with the bypass they may have to do a surgery to go in and look at the remaining stomach etc...if there were any concerns about cancer etc... That convinced me that sleeve was the way to go. Sent from my SM-G920V using BariatricPal mobile app

    6 months out. vitamin requirements?

I take the bariatric fusion chewable multivitamin. Supposed to take it four times a day. I get in 3 most days. My numbers were great at my Sept appointment. It has everything so my surgeon recommended it instead of buying a bunch of seperate pills. Sent from my SM-G920V using BariatricPal mobile app
  12. I stayed on the pill leading up to surgery. So, i was 2 to 3 weeks post op for my first post surgery cycle which was very light. Second one was incredibly heavy and lasted 9 days. Third one has been light but I'm now on day 20! I'm still taking the pill but it doesn't seem to do anything. My surgeon said that is normal as the weight loss changes hormones and throw off our cycles for the first year or so. Sent from my SM-G920V using BariatricPal mobile app

On solids stage but have concerns

I had sleeve but generally had same reaction - returning to food was pretty easy. It is my understanding that dumping often comes from high fat high sugar foods. So no dumping (yet) sounds to me like you are doing well on your plan. Some people never get any dumping. For me the two times I had issues were 1...not chewing enough. I knew as soon as I swallowed that it was too big of a piece of food and it came back up. 2...i forgot about waiting to drink and I had some water on my full stomach and it came back out. So....keep chewing. Keep giving the pause after meals before drinking. If I'm full, then I stop. I don't want to force more food in and make myself sick. Just be sure to track. I still use one protein shake a day to hit my target of 80g protein. Sent from my SM-G920V using BariatricPal mobile app

    Kinda Worried

I can't imagine going into the operating room with a surgeon I didn't trust. For sure talk to your PCP. Your mental health is essential through the process. Your fears of faking the surgery or doing an endoscopy to double check his work are signs that this is not a good match. Either the relationship needs to be repaired and the trust reestablished or you need another surgeon. Your mental health and inner peace are worth it!!! Feel so weak!

I added peanut butter powder from the beginning no problem. Also try unflavored protein powder. I used genepro. Add it to some milk to get in extra protein. The cran grape protein beverage powder isn't very sweet. You may also want to try that. You can order on Amazon or the bariatric pal store. Get the powder. I found the liquid concentrate to be sweeter. You can also add some spices...i used cinnamon to flavor my shakes. If your doctor allows coffee or tea you can also mix with protein shake or unflavored protein powder. I felt weak and tired for the first couple of weeks too. You are not alone. Should I be concerned? Incisions...

I agree with fluffychix. This should help with healing. So much of what we deal with is hard to imagine but when you have to do it you find a way. I once had a wound that i had to flush and then pack to make sure it healed from the inside. So...been there done that with you! So congrats on taking care of yourself and getting it done. Keep them moist. Some sort of ointment is good. I've used Eucerin as well as a vitamin a and d ointment for various wounds in my life. Keeping the edges of the wound clean (hence the brushing) and moist will help healing and scarring. I personally used tegaderm bandages with gauze to cover my two incisions the had some signs of opening. Also keep up with your fluids and protein so your body has what it needs to heal. 20. I count from my highest weight which is also when I saw my surgeon for first time. My surgeon required a 25 to 30 lb weight loss before surgery so I'm counting those pounds. I also count my post surgery weight to give me perspective. From Nov 2016 when I met surgeon to May 2017 surgery lost 51 lbs. From surgery to today lost 38 lbs. When I tell people...i say I've lost 89 lbs. Sent from my SM-G920V using BariatricPal mobile app

    After surgery pain

I'm sorry to hear about your experience. That DR was not listening. I described my pain as a world class ab workout. Every time I stood up or sat down I was sore. It wasn't enough pain to keep me from wanting to move but I knew it was going to be uncomfortable. I could only stand for a few minutes before I got exhausted. My abs and back would get sore and tired. The fatigue didn't change much until about 5 or 6 weeks after surgery. I started commuting to work and waiting for mass transit etc during weeks 3 and 4 still got my abs and back sore. I didn't have any shooting or stabbing pain though. Good luck! Stall

Everyone here will have their own views and experiences. That's why we are here...to get different information and support from each other. My papers from DR and NUT say 1000 to 1500 is a target with women at the lower end and men at the higher end. This is starting at week 6. I struggle to get 1000 calories and the NUT said 800 to 1000 would be good for me when I did a check in a few weeks ago. On my big gym days I add real peanut butter and 2% milk to help get my numbers up. Sent from my SM-G920V using BariatricPal mobile app
  23. I've heard all of those reasons. For me, having taken a drink too early by mistake, it made me sick. It almost immediately came back up. So, I think to pause after eating is also about avoiding the discomfort. Sent from my SM-G920V using BariatricPal mobile app
  24. The 2 week pre op and then 2 week post op liquid diets were a real mental challenge. I was able to take pills...i didn't have to crush them. I just had to do one pill at a time and take them slowly. Pain was minimal. Mostly getting up from chair/bed or sitting down...abs felt like they had been in a major workout. Coming home after surgery my weight went up...all the iv fluids etc...and I was getting up to urinate frequently the first couple of days home. It wasn't until week 6 when I got to eat food again that I started to feel normal...i was very tired the first several weeks, often needing a nap. It is hard to not obsess about the scale. The stalls when the scale doesn't move are more emotional than I expected. I try to focus on the non scale victories and look at the big picture. But it is a bigger mental challenge than I thought it would be. Sent from my SM-G920V using BariatricPal mobile app

weight gain during 6 month weigh-in period

My surgeon had a requirement that patients lose weight before she would agree to the surgery. She wanted me to lose 25 to 30 lbs based on my 377 starting weight. I was 326 when I weighed in the morning of surgery. She was very pleased. My insurance required 6 months of supervised weigh ins. The way the nurses explained it the bmi still had to meet the criteria but the insurance otherwise didn't focus on gains or losses. Over the 6 months of weigh ins my numbers mostly went down but I did have a small gain one month. But overall, I lost 51 lbs from November 2016 to May 2017 doing protein focus program aiming for 120g a day and built up to 3 workouts with a trainer and 2 extra days of cardio. I'm about 14 weeks post op and doing 80g protein, 2 to 3 days/week at gym and I'm down another 37 lbs for 88 lbs total. Sent from my SM-G920V using BariatricPal mobile app
