RNY or Sleeve! What to do!

I am 58 years old with HBP, Sleep apena ( just diagnosed), athritis in my knees and hands. I do have a lower BMI, about 70 to75lbs to lose. I have had gerd for years but not so much anymore. However i have meds in case I need it. I orignally wanted the sleeve after doc told me about possibly the heartburn side effects of the sleeve, i leaned towards rny. I read all about rny and complications many years out and did not know what to do. I was so confused. At my 1st consult with the surgeon he thought I had a hiatial hernia and said " lets get a EGD and go from there". Had that done and on my 2nd and last consult he said, he would fix the hernia and he thought the sleeve would be a better fit for me and he did not seem concerned with the gerd. So Im trusting him and believing, and praying that I will not have any gerd issues down the line. I feel good about my choice as I worried so much about many complications down the line. Wish me luck 4/11 is the day!!! And I wish you all the best.

    April sleevers!?

Lovealwaysrosie: I am an april sleever!!! 4/11. Im getting really nervous. Its getting really real! Let keep in touch. 4/4 i start my liquid diet. That scares me. I hope i can do it.
  5. 60 Sandy: i have had gerd or years. At my first consult the doc told me with the sleeve gerd can get really bad 4 to 5 years out. Then after an EGD at my last consult, he saw the hernia I had on the pic of the EGD and seemed to think for me I would be fine with the sleeve. I do not have heartburn that much anymore and have about 75 lbs to loose. So im praying he is correct. Im 58 and do not want to have any revision down the line.

    Have surgery date 4/3/2017

In nervous also. Im being sleeved 4/11. I have a really good surgeon though. I think most are nervous before hand.
  11. As time grows closer to my surgery date I like many am getting cold feet. As I research more and more I have been reading about MANY people have teeth breaking, cavities, bone loss and needing to have root canals. Person after person was completly devastated about never being told about this side effect. All are getting or have gotton dentures because it was so bad. Many could not keep up with the dental bills. I would love to hear from some people who have had surgery a numbers of years ago and hear their thoughts. Thanks

    Why did this happen?

Possibly the salt content for the taco seasoning
  13. I also have had gerd for years. I thought because of it I would end up having RNY, but after finding I have a hiatial hernia and much ducussion with my surgeon he seems to think I will be fine with the sleeve. He thinks in the long run its a better fin for me. Im a low bmi and high blood pressure and sleep apnea.

    So nervous

I went today for my final consult and mt scale is 2/1/2 lbs different than theirs was. Just try and get a lb or 2 lower than thwy want. Today when I weifged in I was1 lb ligher than they wantedand they said nothing. If by chance u r a lb more than they want just say your scale said you were xxxx ( whatever weight they wanted)

    So nervous

You?say u are under your goal weight so O dont understand what the problem is??? Keep doing what you are doing.
  19. carlychloe2

    Any regrets?

May I ask of you are having any dental issues? I just read an article about RNY patients 5 to7 years out having many issues with their teeth, ending up with dentures.
  20. 60 Sandy: if you have heartburn or gerd Im sure your surgeon will say bypass for you. The acid reflux can get worse with the sleeve and many end up getting a revision to the bypass because of it.
  21. carlychloe2

    Sleeve vs bypass

Usually the reason sleeve patients get revisions to bypass is because they end up having very bad acid reflux.... daily.

    Dental problems after RNY???

Airstream 88: I will have my second and last consult this friday. Im gonna show the dr. Both articles. I then then will make my decsion. Not sure if you read the research article one that I posted but it say, " Rapid bone loss was occuring despite having normal blood levels of calcui., vitamin D". So this concludes tgat somrthing else is going on that is causing the rapid loss that is not showing up on the blood work. Best of luck to you. Ill post what the doc says.
