The reason for the minimal liquid with one scoop of protein is because it is EXTREMELY difficult to get enough protein in. Our stomachs no longer allow for the same amount of "food" (protein powder), so packing as much protein into as little of liquid as possible is important. You'll find that even 4 ounces is hard to drink after surgery.

coffee is not decaf, but I am allowed caffeinated drinks. I have drunk caffeine on an empty stomach before w/o problem, too.

Oh okay. That's what I was going to suggest. For me, I cannot do caffeine on an empty stomach. If it's never been an issue for you, that probably isn't it. It could be the different balance between protein and carbs (having essentially no carbs with high protein) then what you're used to.
