You look incredible! I am to months post op and can't wait to get to where you are. I do have a question as my mom is wanting to have the surgery now as well but her medical won't cover it. Did you pay out of pocket in Mexico and if you did do you mind me asking what the total amount was?

I paid around $6100 for a mini with a high BMI. But I believe it is different depending on your exact circumstances. Sleeves are cheaper but I 100% recommend a mini. I was not going to chance having to revise a sleeve.

My experience was great to say the least. I was picked up with my friend at the Holiday Inn. (We came early to go to the San Diego Zoo) We went across the border to the Oasis of Hope hospital, which I believe now they have a brand new hospital just for bariatrics. It was very nice and clean. The staff was all great. I was sore for a few days, but nothing major. I haven't had any complications and I've had a lot of success with my weight loss. I never felt unsafe in Tijuana and the valets were always close by. I would do it all again if I had to.

  3. Hi all, I am getting my MGB surgery on May 16th, and I had a question for you guys who have already done it.

Do you actually feel hungry or not? Or is it just that you know your stomach can't handle much food? Like do you actually feel full or what? Do small portions feel satisfying? I'm a little confused about how surgery with change my body. Any comments are appreciated. :D

  4. Hi all, I have decided I'm going with Dr. Illan as my surgeon. I live in the US, and will be traveling to Tijuana. His rep suggested I go the MGB due to reflux, not to mention it seems like it will help me lose weight faster and prevent me from regaining later on. My concern is, where I live the MGB is not very common. I am concerned about finding a Dr. who can help me if any complications arise.

I told my dad I was going to MX for surgery and he FLIPPED, he doesn't want me to go so I have to go behind his back and do it anyway. (I'm 24, but still I don't like keeping secrets.) I have heard of amazing experiences in Mexico, but I can't help but be scared.

I would be very interested in hearing everyones' experiences, and if anyone has used Dr. Illan. Anything to calm my nerves would be great. I have my best friend for support, but my family is 100% NOT on board at all.

  5. Hi all! I was considering getting gastric surgery in Mexico. I currently live in the US, and my insurance does't cover anything related to gastric surgery here. I saw that Dr. Illan had good reviews and looks affordable so I was considering choosing him. I was unsure of whether I should choose gastric bypass or the mini bypass, I think the mini bypass would be better for me but from what I hear it is not a common procedure in the US, and I am concerned about finding a Dr. that can treat me here if something goes wrong. Also, has anyone had issues with their insurance once they got back not covering things related to having the surgery? From what I hear Mexico is very safe to have surgery but I can't help but be scared to do it. I am so afraid I'm gonna pop open on the plane or something. :o If anyone has any insight I would appreciate it.

  6. Hi all! I am planning to go to Mexico for a VSG, I was considering Ariel Ortiz as my surgeon. If anyone has any experience with him, let me know I would love to hear it.

But my main question is, since I will be traveling to Mexico for my surgery I will not being all the counseling and preparation for the surgery like I would in the US. (6 mos of dieting, psych eval, dietary counseling). I am worried that because I am skipping this part my surgery will not be as successful.

Does anybody have advice or insight they would like to share?

  7. Hi guys! I'm new here so I'm sorry if this is the wrong board or whatever, but I have a question.

My insurance is BCBSFL and while researching, I learned that BCBS does not cover bariatric surgery in Florida. But I do have a BMI in excess of 40, and I was wondering if there was something I could do like submit a form or something that would get them to cover it? Has anyone had any luck or experience with this? Thanks in advance. :)
