Gastric Bypass or Sleeve and Why?

I personally chose the sleeve because I know several people who had full bypass and had many many health issues afterwards. The sleeve is a restrictive process that does exactly that, it restricts the amount that you can eat at any time, whereas the bypass is both restrictive and malabsorbtive so it not only restricts, but stops your body from absorbing the calories, nutrients and Protein. It really is a personal decision based on your needs and where you are comfortable. I spent many years say absolutely not to WLS, but that was before the sleeve was available, once I researched my brain to death about it, I changed my mind about WLS.

The sleeve is like a backpack..

What a great analogy! I always explain it like the process takes you back through infancy. First you survive on fluids, then soft foods, and then eventually you can add in solid foods, but this time when your learning to eat, you are teaching yourself to eat differently.

    First World Problems with Friends

I hear ya, however...consider taking an Uber to the hospital and having a friend take you home. Considering that unless your hospital has a pharmacy on site, you will be likely to need prescriptions filled. When I was in surgery, they also located a hernia that we were unaware of prior to the procedure which they repaired, this meant I got to go home after one day, but needed help getting up, needed assistance for my first shower, and God Bless my husband, but help in the bathroom as well. While I am sure that you will not need your friends for such intimate, care having someone you trust to help you secure pain/nausea meds can be a plus! Either way the ultimate decision relies with you. Also, check with your hospital...mine offers a free pick up and take home service.

How is your weight loss going?

    Surgery Date 10/26/2016 15lbs lost since then, 11 pre-op so a total of 26lbs in a month.

    I'm too Fat

Hang in there, we've all had terrible experiences with medical personnel, I am sure of it. I once had an endocrinologist tell me that I would lose weight a lot easier if I ate more rice. I was there to see her for my type 2 diabetes and she suggested that I eat MORE carbs. Hmmmm? I was terribly upset by her. Having the procedure is intensely personal. So if it's something you want..GO FOR IT!! I spent 7 years of my life blogging about trying to lose weight. I considered surgery at the very beginning and I was so scared by it, I made it out to be an evil thing and listened to all the naysayers. 7 years later, there I was on the operating table knowing that it was the best decision for me. Good Luck!

    Down before surgery

I was a bundle of nerves leading up to the surgery, knowing in my heart there was no way they would not approve me, but at the same time, concerned that they wouldn't I was cranky and irritable. I spent a lot of time worrying about whether or not I was making a mistake. 3 weeks post op and I already know it was no mistake!

    Not even 24hrs post op

My nausea was virtually non existent once I went home. While I was in the hospital, I would feel it coming on after I walked. The only time I felt nausea at home was during my first shower, they gave me Zofran for home , I took it and I was good. Currently between 3 and four weeks post op and that has been my only bout with it. Good Luck!

    Work Time Off Notice

Keep this in mind, you don't have to tell them anything other than you will be out. At the most you can tell them you have to have a procedure and will need a few days. I was out for 2 weeks, but could've gone back at 1, but I would've been uncomfortable. I actually had a hernia repair during my surgery and that was my only source of pain. Since it sounds like your new job is more active, you may not be ready to return after a week. It took me til week three to get back to anything close to my regular energy levels. Good Luck to you!

    First meeting with the surgeon

I did not have to write everything down, but I did have to have medically supervised weight loss for 6 months prior to approval.

    Losing yourself literally

I am just over three weeks post surgery and I think the loss has changed me for the better. I think people have always seen me as friendly, but I'm more apt to be outwardly affectionate with hugs and such. I feel more comfortable now.

    I officially hate vitamins!

Have you tried the Viactiv Calcium. It is a chewable and it looks and tastes like a caramel.
  20. I had my VSG on 10/26/2016 and I am experiencing the same thing. I think a lot of people are calling it the 3rd week stall. Just keep doing the right thing and I'm sure that it will start coming down again.
  21. Regarding Regret...I have tried everything else. This works for me. How or why could I ever regret it? I am just 3 weeks out, but I already feel so much better. I feel so much better about the food than before. Yes, I have to focus a lot on what I eat, but I plan ahead to minimize the annoyance. I travel with a small cooler now and make sure that I have something available should my plans change. If for some reason, I don't have the cooler...thanks to my former fast food and casual dining days, I know who serves cottage cheese or where I can get tuna with low fat mayo. To those who have had complications, I do feel for your situation. hair loss has been a huge concern for me since pre-surgery days. The Protein, the fluids, and the Vitamins are key!
  22. Liquids definitely suck, my surgical group doesn't have a puree phase, but instead a soft food phase, which I am currently in...my mood is much improved. Hang in there!
  23. I'm 3 weeks post surgery and the vivid food dreams were crazy. I woke up convinced that I had eaten Nachos and hot dogs (foods I rarely ate before). I still feel hunger, but less frequently and definitely not in relation to something I see or smell. Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App

    Laying The Groundwork

I'm post-op 10/26. I lost 34lbs pre surgery and 15 post. I have a different take on the communication aspect. I told everybody and I was grateful that I did. I have gotten so much support both pre and post surgery and I feel like all that would have happened if I hadn't been vocal was other people's speculation. I'd rather control my own narrative. I even blog about my experiences and have since 2011. Www.lifeinsidetheblubbersarcophagus.blogspot.com. Congrats on your pre-op victory! It's your journey, make it your own!
