  1. Glad people seem to be doing ok! I feel so behind since I haven't had surgery yet! :P

I had a bunch of pre-op work done yesterday... I can only imagine how much my bill is going to be after having 10-15 different blood tests, 2 urine tests, 2 chest x-rays, and an abdominal ultrasound. :o But, it's for a good cause!

  2. I'm from Iowa. I have healthcare through the school (I teach) and it's a small mom/pop kind of health insurance. My surgery center says they've only have 2 other people with this insurance come through and they were both approved within 1 day.

My insurance only requires 3 things, 100 pounds overweight, 2 doctor letters and pre-authorization.

I'm a little nervous about being approved though. I'm much overweight (my BMI is 57), but I do not have sleep apnea, diabetes, or high blood pressure (surprisingly). I do have back pain, and some joint pain when exercising/moving.

Can insurance deny me, just because I'm overweight, and have no other heath problems?

  3. I haven't posted much lately. My sleep study went well. Blood tests, chest X-ray and ultrasound on Thursday morning. Therapy appointment on January 31st. Hoping for surgery in March when I can (hopefully) have my out of pocket money saved up! On the right track, but very nervous for when they send my stuff to insurance.

  4. Hi again all! I had my first consultation appointment on Tuesday the 22nd, and it went very well. I need to set up an appointment with a therapist to do my preop stuff, get a few preop tests done, and do a sleep test for the dr. I need to send in previous medical history so they can send in my stuff for insurance approval. If approved, I could have surgery in February or March!! But... I have to come up with my out of pocket cost the week before surgery, (at least 80% of it) which could be at a maximum of $1600.. Ugh.. Saving as much as I can...

  5. Abbie when you go in it starts out as getting all the basic info...you and them both. You will meet with the nutritionist. She's super nice. You will probably talk with Maria the Nurse Practitioner. She is so super AMAZING. She tells it like it is and is very down to earth. I love her. And Kim is the most amazing insurance guru in the world. I love love love her. But you will talk to Kim I'm certain too. You should spend 30-45 minutes with nutritionist. Half hour with Maria. They let you know exactly what steps need to be taken with your insurance, what test you need, and they schedule everything for you. They will give you a lot of information...but they hold your hand through it all. You might meet Glascock that day...but I didn't meet him till he came to one of the group meetings. I hope this helps. Tell Kim...Mindi Woods says hello. She was so amazing at getting me through the insurance. Feel free to text me any time 319-610-1505

Awesome, thank you!! I know my insurance doesn't require any sort of testing or dieting.. so I'll be interested to see how much needs to be done for Dr. Glascock. So exciting!!

    Welcome treadmillwalker!!!

Hi Tdia and Abbie!! Are you both in Des Moines? I'm in Des Moines. Had surgery September 29th. I haven't had any complications. I'm dealing with the mental stuff mostly. Figuring out how to eat again, how to cook healthy, shop healthy, etc. It's getting easier though. My team at unity point is top notch. I had Dr Lamasters. I've lost 23lbs so far....six weeks out. Slow loss so far. Hoping to join the YMCA soon. If either of you have questions, let us know. We're in this together! :-)

I'm going to Cedar Falls. ????

  8. I have my first consultation on November 22nd. I've contacted my insurance to find out if WLS is covered, it is if it's deemed necessary, along with anything needed with surgery (hospital stay, IV, IV medications, anesthetic, etc.). I also asked what the requirements were in order to be deemed necessary.

    They stated:

--100+ pounds overweight (my BMI is quite a bit over 40...)

--2 surgeons deeming it necessary (don't know if I go to see 2 different surgeons or how that works)

    --pre-authorization through insurance.

I've read about many people having to do different tests, doing a diet, etc... Could that still be my case even if insurance didn't tell me over the phone?

Has anyone only had minimal requirements for their insurance?

Did you have lots of requirements through the Dr. office if you did/didn't have surgery requirements?

Lots of questions, but would love for anyone to reply!!

    Thank you!!
