bnicolexo reacted to KassMiller in Initial consult
I had to go through 6 months of monthly calls or appointments with a dietician or my doctor or someone in the surgery department. Then... had to get a mental health exam and then 6 weeks of classes and a final mental exam before even meeting with the surgeon. I am on week 5 of my classes so hopefully sometime in May I'll get to meet with surgeon and then it'll be 2 to 6 weeks maybe til I can do the surgery. I am both excited and nervous but it is just a tool for success right?

I had my first consult today, my insurance requires 6 months weigh in. But surgeon told me since I've gone to my PCP the past 3 months in a row they will count towards my requirement and now I have 3 months to go.

I bring eye Patches and ear plugs, because it is so hard to sleep in a hospital.

Pillow for the ride home, slippers and bathrobe if you prefer and change of clothes for when you leave. They will give you gasx, biogenesis, cepacol (sore throat), and toiletries if you need em.

Yeah! Definetly a pillow for the ride home! I took a spare change of clothes (something loose that won't bother your stomach incisions) and of course the necessary toiletries (toothbrush, toothpaste, face wash wipes). Other then that you won't need much else. I slept for most of the day of and morning after before I was released. I would prep more for after you get home (Like the Clear Liquids you'll need and some form of stool softener).

All you really need is, clothes to leave in (which can be the same you came in) , toothbrush &paste. Some same Gas x stripes incase you have gas problems. Definitely carmex or whatever lip balm you use. hair accessories, some bottoms to walk in up and down the hall. I end up calling for feminine wipes. I came home today and didn't need anything but those. Blanket and pillow for ride home. Well wishes and blessings to you both.

I officially have a date for surgery, it will be a few weeks from now on 3/16!!!
What are some things you took with you, or things that you didn't bring but wish you would have brought?

Hello!
I am on my weight loss journey and I am in the pre-op testing/evaluation phase
I had an initial consult, my gallbladder ultrasound with normal results and a sleep study where I possibly have sleep apnea, however they were unable to say until a doctor looks at my results and makes that decision
Next week I have my EKG, psych eval and see the nutritionist
I was curious about everyone else's experience in the pre-op testing phase, so far I have no complaints!
If anyone has any words of advice or want to share their experience I'd love to hear it! Or if you're just starting this journey as well and are looking for someone to talk to for support I don't mind chatting

My surgeon and case manager are taking care of everything bariatric related, my PCP doesn't have much experience in that area and said he will write up a referral for anything I need. I haven't needed him yet, but I'm glad he's with me on the surgery and willing to help!

I did the same also and chose RNY, my surgeon agreed with me
Insurance is difficult to deal with I heard, my case manager at the surgeons office has been wonderful and she's been on a roll preparing everything for me. Hopefully you get lucky and get a great one, they can be so helpful!

I had my first visit with the surgeon today. I'm pretty excited! Anyone else just beginning their journey as well? What are some of your requirements?
Recently my insurance (BCBS NC) has changed the requirements to include a 12 month diet prior to seeking surgery , but the office I chose informed me they've submitted a patients info recently to the same insurance company without the actual diet but with a lot of documentation and it has been approved so I have my fingers crossed!! I have several co-morbidities and a lot of weight loss attempts

Over the years my TSH levels have been checked, they were normal to slightly elevated at time, nothing that concerned anyone until July of 2016 my TSH was 27!! Self pay was terrible! I wouldn't recommend it to anyone. But you definitely live and learn, it taught me how valuable insurance is and I'm so happy to have it!
I have not checked into any information other than the facility and insurance info. I'm in Sanford. Apex and Cary aren't too far, I'm going to try to see if I can find any in that area

I'm starting fresh, I have been without insurance so I have been waiting. Self pay has been so expensive! Not from experience, but from reading on here insurance companies can be tough to deal with. Hopefully you get approved, I think you will!
I also have a wonky thyroid. Hypothyroidism
I have seen BCBS updated their policy on the website, however I haven't seen a timeframe for that! I have seen the timeframe for tests and such, but none about a supervised diet
I know on the website for Bariatric Specialists of NC they do notify you of changes if you have BCBS about a 6 or 12 month program, but it's not in the policy. It confuses me, but I will find out eventually! Hoping it's not a 12 month thing, I can live with a 6 month program lol

Thank you all for a response. The information was helpful! My new policy became effective today and I was able to log in and get an estimated cost. Does anyone know how accurate that tends to be?
