    Calcium Supplements and Eating Dairy

Regardless of people doing great without calcium supplements. It's a fact that calcium is necessary for muscle contraction. People posting that they don't follow medical advice and are "fine" are NOT helping newbies asking for advice. I don't get why anyone would post a second response after someone takes the time to explain why you actually do need supplemental calcium after WLS. You are right about vit D and calcium. 30 weeks, abnormal Glucose test

Gestational Diabetes is common but because a significant number of women who get it will develop type 2 diabetes later in life you should continue to meet monitor your blood sugar with randomly weekly checks. Although normal weight people get type 2, keeping your weight down will greatly reduce your risk. If your doctor hasn't already told you you need to be on a low carb 1600 calorie a day diet to prevent an overly large baby resulting in a c-section. Babies typically gain about 1/2 pound a day the last 8- 10 weeks of pregnancy, babies of diabetic mothers gain more that's why they have such high birth weights. Calcium Supplements and Eating Dairy

Well, no. Not really. But I do see your point. This is a good example of why multiple points of view from people with different backgrounds is so important. Thanks Bill. I was worried when I read some of the posts on this thread.
  5. I did have hospital hernia repair when I had my sleeve surgery and what I told people who asked. And because I work at the hospital it's also what my surgeon wrote on the white board.
  6. I am not keeping it "secret" but, like all my private medical information I am not telling anyone who doesn't need to know. My husband and two friends before surgery and last week my assistant because she keeps buying me fancy coffee drinks to have with the 20 pounds of baked goods she brings into the office every day between Thanksgiving and New Years. Yesterday I told my beautician because I needed to have micro current tx to plump the collagen in my cheeks.

    Calcium Supplements and Eating Dairy

The reason you need supplemen talk calcium after WLS has nothing to do with bone density. Calcium is essential for muscle contraction. Remember those leg cramps when you are pregnant? You needs 1500 mg taken in 3 500 mg doses to prevent muscle cramps. In addition, Vit D requires calcium for proper absorption. Your PCP took one nutrition class in medical or nursing school. A DR or advanced practice nurse is about the last person I would go to for advice on supplements. http://meat.tamu.edu/ansc-307-honors/muscle-contraction/

    *sigh*

The OR hospital where I work always is fully booked for elective surgery thru the end of December because so many people who have already met their deductible fill the schedule. Ask if there is a wait list.
  9. I didn't think the sleeve "expires" but in some cases the persons commitment to their partnership with it does. To keep my weight at 280 I was eating over 3,000 calories a day. I am uncomfortably overfill if I eat 4oz. Even if my sleeve ends up being twice the same size it is now it that about 6-8 oz. I know I will have to monitor what I eat and never have liquids with my meals forever but I really believe that the sleeve PLUS the other skills I acquired pre op will serve me for as long as I do my part. A word about bariatric surgeons. At my pre surgery visit my surgeon used a formula to calculate my expected weight loss. She told me at the AVERAGE weight loss of someone of my weight at my age was 40 pounds in the first six months and 40 pounds in the next 12 months. Initially I was upset because if I lost 80 pounds I would still be considered obese. But she also explained that it's an average. If I wanted to do better I had to be willing to work. My current "goal weight" is 180 lbs. Realistic, but far lower that "average" My timeline is 10months. Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App

    I feel unmotivated

I have also found that I seem to lose more weight when up the calories a little. Might be a coincidence. Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App
  11. I find that my decision making process is best when I am not home hungry so I make sure I don't get hungry. One of the best skills I developed during my pre op phase is the ability to make a mistake and get right back into n track. In the past if I was trying to lose weight and ate something I shouldn't (for example half of a cheese cake) I would decide that the whole day was a wash so I might as well eat a couple of burgers and some sweet potato fries and start greasy in the morning. I was ready to eat the squirrel...

we have Pulis ( Hungary sheepdog with the Rasta hair) the young one, Chompers, killed a few squirrels (and a rabbit) this spring and now, even with their tiny brains, the squirrels don't come down to the ground in the fenced part of our property any more. Choppy still follows them as the jump around the trees and shrubs in hopes of chomping down another one. He's a wilfull little fella'. We cut down the last of our old walnut trees a few years back to plant nectarines and peaches.... still have squirrels and now we also have (very loud) stellar jays. Love your stories!

I was ready to eat the squirrel...

We used to live in farm country but the city moved in around us and now we have a neighbor who feeds squirrels.. for years there were just one or two... then there were five or six, now more than enough... My chickens chase them all over the fields. At least they don't have weekly episodes of domestic violence on my roof like the (extremely well fed) raccoons. Thank God for coyote!

    I've lost over 30 pounds!

Yep, it's crazy unreal! I only wish I had done it sooner.

    I've lost over 30 pounds!

I am still new...I know some people lose more but I did my metabolism in with years of yoyo dieting and losing the same 100 pounds 7 times in 20 years. Get a couple of packages of 4 oz containers, some tiny forks, spoons and sets of measuring spoons and cups at the dollar store. I keep a journal. I write down everything I eat and drink and total it up the grams of Protein, carbs and Clear liquids at the end of the day. I also record my blood sugars, exercise and Vitamins in the same book. I never wait till I am crazy hungry to eat. After the second episode I now carry a tiny spoon a can of tuna (pull top) and packets of mayo, pepper and hot sauce in my purse. I almost always get the minimum required 64 oz of Water a day and for the past two weeks I have been working on during at least 16 oz more. I walk (quickly) at least a mile, usually closer to 2 miles every 2nd day. Striving to do more exercise. I moisturize my skin head to toe with coconut oil with added vit E and (autosomal) vit C My favorite shake: 4oz of raw juice (I like "green super food") 1 scoop unflavored Protein powder (Unjury) , 1 cup of ice. Blend well. Sweeten with stevia if desired.

A bit of a shock and a hard lesson

I know that frantic feeling well. I now have an emergency food kit, small can of tuna and packets of mayonnaise, pepper, hot sauce and a baby spoon in my purse.

For people who really enjoy drinking you need to be careful because weight loss patients have significantly higher rates of alcoholism, especially if there is a family history of that. it puts you at a much greater risk. Almost every on line article about this came Rom the same small (and IMO flawed) study. The belief that WLS patients have a higher risk of alcoholism than anyone else is not so cut and dry. It's true that people who overcome one addiction, be it food, alcohol, cigarettes, drugs, shopping or even religion or exercise, are more at risk for a new addiction. However, the actual number of people who have WLS with no previous history of alcohol abuse is small. People who enjoy drinking alcohol are not always alcoholicc. And, like many obese people who don't enjoy eating, many alcoholics don't actually get much pleasure out of drinking.

Sums it up perfectly. I think I actually enjoy food more now.
  23. Vitamin D is stored in fat, I think the levels go up when you loose weight. You should stop taking it as it as high vit D levels can cause hypecalcimia. Vit B12 fluctuates quickly don't take it for 24 hours before your recheck. Low Vitamin D is epidemic in the NW especially from the beginning of October to the end of September. I had to be on prescription mega doses twice in the past five years even though I take 100mg a day with 500mg of Calcium. Mine was lowish in partial when I had my first bariatric labs and pre op but normal now.

Duh...How to decide whom to tell?

I actually managed to have surgery and a two day hospital stay in, not just the hospital, but the actual building I work in without anyone noticing... I told my assistant yesterday because she keeps getting me giant coffee drinks to go with all the holiday asked goods she is bringing into the office.

Got confused today re eating bugles ....

Actually, this page was started by someone from another country who didn't know what BUGLES were. Maybe it's being perpetrated by a drama queen who thinks everything is about her.
