  1. This is such sad news and we should all pray for this sweet family who lost their mother. It is heartbreaking.

One of the many purposes of a site like this inform and educate patients about the doctors available to them. To say people only go to Mexico because it's cheap or because they want it done fast is very judgmental and uninformed. That is not why I went, I had a choice, and the cost would have been the same with insurance coverage or going to Mexico. You cannot unilaterally categorize an entire country and patients who choose to go there based on your preconceived notions. People die on tables in the US also and the US has butcher assembly line doctors as well. You are naive to think you any safer when you do not do you research. My mother, an RN, worked directly with bariatric patients post op in Texas and I could tell you some pretty scary stories about many US TX surgeons. YOU have to do your research wherever you decide to have your surgery. There are some very good and experienced surgeons in Mexico and the US and mine happened to be Dr. Illan. I am a mother of 3 and you can bet I did my research.

Thank you Alex for keeping us informed and please people, do your research.

  2. I don't really know anything about her and neither does anyone else here unless they happen to know her personally. I don't think you see everything a person is or goes through by watching them on TV. You only see what directors want to portray. I do know she was morbidly obese and she did the work like all of either are or are planning to do hopefully with success forever because food addiction sucks! She is just a person who was suffering and she is one of us. I wish her luck on the difficult journey that is HER journey. We are all the same, not one of us is better than anyone else.

  3. I went by myself to Mexico and was sleeved. I was in the hospital 2 days and a hotel 2 days. I was fine on my own. I flew into San Diego from Texas. I went through Bill Yanez with BariatricPal so the hospital plus hotel were included along with vallets to help me if I needed it. If you are traveling 2 days after then I would say no, not by yourself but if you are staying 4 days you will be ok.

  4. Your calves are probably always going to be bigger than other people, they got bigger carrying all your weight around. They will get smaller but they probably won't be the size of a person your same size that was never as obese. I have lost 4 inches off my calves but they are still larger than most people my size. I wear an 8/10 and my calves are still pretty big and give me trouble in some skinny jeans.

My calves aren't fat either they are just muscle.

    I love your username!

  5. Yes, I had my sleeve on November 18, 2016 with Dr. Illan. I recommend going through BariatricPal Team MX via Bill Yanez. The hospital is top notch, clean, the nurses are caring and efficient. The sweet vallets are there for you 24 hours a day in shifts to get whatever you need. The hotel is upscale and I felt safe at all times. What is promised is delivered. Best decision I have ever made and best care I have ever received.

  6. I went to Dr Illan and have a 2 year old. I went alone for the surgery because i wanted my hubby to stay home with our three girls. Vallets were a BIG help! I didn't experience much pain but I was up and walking the second I could and I walked a bunch! I think that is why. By the time I got home I was able to handle my mommy duties just fine but I did teach my 2 year old to crawl into her car seat with minimal assistance from me before I left as a precaution. You know, just kind of guiding her in. All other mommy duties like the carpool for my older ones, diaper changes, etc were no problem. I was pretty much back to myself when I got home.

  8. I recommend going through BariatricPal Team MX and using Dr. Illan at the Oasis of Hope Hospital. My surgery coordinator was Bill Yanez and my dietician was Stacy. I had my sleeve on November 18, 2016 and I cannot say enough good things about this wonderful group of people. The hospital is top notch, clean, the nurses are caring. The rooms are completely private with private bathrooms and large comfy spa type showers. The sweet vallets are there for you 24 hours a day in shifts and it's like having a private assistant 24-7. The vallets were truly happy to help Dr. Flores was my anesthesiologist and she was caring and efficient. They are just a very special group. Best decision I have ever made and best care I have ever received and that is in comparison to US Texas hospitals just to be clear.

  9. Body shaming ain't cool. Period. Ever. Never. And I won't tolerate those who throw shade at someone who isn't up to their "level" of perceived physical perfection. I had a day y'all!

Even the fittest have rolls. Who cares? Focus on rollin' with your homies instead of your homies' rolls.

My stomach area stretched to unbelievable lengths to carry three humans full term, safely. My poor skin hung on for dear life as it was pushed to its elastic limits for 27 collective months and a lifetime eating disorder! I will absolutely never apologize for that nor will I apologize for how it looks when I sit down. And those stretch marks? Yeah. I love each and every one of them. They remind me of when I had super human powers because women are bad asses!

I exercise to be strong. And there's no amount of exercise that will get rid of rolls or extra skin when I sit or bend over and I'm ok with that. I'm not chasing unicorns here and I loooove unicorns!

So if you're grabbing your rolls and body-shaming yourSELF, stop it right now. Get in your own corner, honey, and tell yourself you are a badass! You've spent years putting yourself down and how is that working for ya? Try lifting yourself up the next chapter of your life and see if you feel any differently. I promise you will if you love yourself. And believe me, I assess you based on your innate character, ability to love, and how you treat others over how many rolls and extra skin you have adorning your BEAUTIFUL body.

If you're drawn to head to the gym to live a healthier life, do it because you LOVE your body...not because you hate it.

    Love,

    Me

PS. 35 more pounds to go!! Yay!

  10. I had my surgery with Dr. Illan on November 18, 2016. Everything went very smooth and there were no issues. I went in very hesitant and believing what I was promised was too good to be true. It was not and all of my expectations were met and very far exceeded. I went through Bill Yanez with BariatricPal Team MX. All the doctors, nurses, nutritionists, and BariatricPal staff took care of me better than any hospital I have been in, in my life. I have never left the country for surgery but I left my hubby home with our three young children and went to Mexico alone. He fully supported my decision to have the surgery but was not a fan of my going alone. In order for me to feel secure our kids were taken care of I asked him to stay. I was scared to go alone but when I say that the staff and fellow patients became my friends and supporters I am not exaggerating. I made friends for life with people who saw me at my weakest and were strangers to me and they will have a special part in my heart forever. Please do not deprive yourself of this surgery if you need it. I cannot tell you how life changing this surgery has been for me. It has given me peace that you will not understand until you are there with me. Peace of knowing that this struggle with food is finally over and this tool for addiction will be your support buddy forever. 3 months later I am already about 60% of the way to my final goal, a goal I never though I would meet but I now know is in my reach. You convinced him once and you can get him there again and if you can't then I hate to say it but, go anyway, do it for you. Tell him you love him and you want his support but if he can't give you that then you will have to go anyway because ultimately this is your decision. I say this with the disclaimer that I am known for being a bit of a pistol but thankfully the hubby loves that about me. ;)

  11. So great to hear someone say exactly what I am thinking, I have lost before and got down pretty good but I gained it all back. I'm probably having surgery in May sometime and you wrote exactly how I feel. I've saved all my skinny clothes because I can't wait to wear them . Life is great!

You will wear them again girl! Save them :)
