My bmi was 35 and my insurance paid for mine due to my diabetes, sleep apnea, blood pressure and choslestorol. Weight was 226 at 5'6". The DS is really the only surgery that about a 98% cure rate for diabetes. I have been holding at 173-75lbs for the past two months, which took away the "I am going lose so much i'm going to look sick" fear. I still want to lose 20 more lbs. and at least 5 by my 57th birthday, so I started going to The gym class my doctor provides.

I had a Traditional DS but my surgeons left the length of a modified, about 9 ft. I have pretty regular morning bowel movements. I take a tablespoon of castor oil if my eating has been on point, so it moves easily. If I have sugar, i do get faul gas and an oil slick loose bm...so, I don't do it often and know I'll be home, alone, near the bathroom. Never trusting a fart. I usually always have one premier Protein shake 28g or a myprotein 30g chocolate cookie. I aim for 80g a day in diet, so I probably get 110 a day. My 3 month labs were perfect.

9 ft common channel here. 2 Multivitamins, 1 2000mg vit D and 4 500mg calcium/d3 chews per day and my labs are fine. I do usually have at least one Premier Protein or a MyProtein shake per day, too, which 25% of daily vits, too.

Best of luck. Until it is done, you really don't understand the pschological burden you have carrying around, deep with, about the "failure" of not being able to succeed because of the regains, the fears of heart attacks, the fear of complications of diabetes, going blind, losing a toe-foot, going on dialysis. I it amazing knowing what a full tummy feels like, to not be experiencing constant hunger, being able to immediately stop all diabetic meds, my A1c is 5.1 after 3 month labs, being able to donate clothes the second they are a quarter inch too big....I can go on and on on how grateful I am. By shear luck, because of researching, I ran across the DS research, knowing all about it before my first meeting, made me my biggest advocate. It is the only surgery that is 97% effect in reversing diabetes. All the others are about 20% less successful. Not all bariatric surgeons do it because you have to a great surgeon. It is not just snip and sew, so ask around. Look up statistics on surgeons. Ask for their complication rates.

80 to 100 is usually if you get SIPS, where your common channel is 250+ which allows more absorption than regular DS where your cc is way smaller therefore less absorption and more Protein needed.

Hi All, I am asking all the DS/MDS/SIPS folk who have video blogs or vlogs to post a link here. There are a lot of vertical sleeves coming up on youtube, but as you know, we have slightly different issues, smells, Vitamins, etc, to deal with. I would think, if you have a favorite vloger already, who isn't on this forum, you could link their page, too. Please only do Duodenal Switches, Modified DS or the SIPS on this thread.
follow this format, if you don't mind, so people can be picky, if they want, and watch the vlogs with the same procedures, but I would recommend watching everyones.

Gratz to all three! When one says DS, is that the traditional or modified-SIPS? (or hybrid, like mine...traditional but 3 meters of common channel, rather than the one meter in traditional?)

Folks that had the sleeve done and put weight back on can do a "revision" which adds the Duodenal Switch portion. I figured with the SIPS/Modified, there CAN be complications, but it was only one surgery, it is 99% effective to getting rid of diabetes, it is the one bariatric surgery that brags about less than 80% of any weight regain after 10 years. The 1 meter common channel in the regular DS takes the weight off fast and you have to be hyper careful never to stop taking your Vitamins, since there is such a small area for absorption, saved for the 50% BMI folks. With a 36% BMI, my insurance approved it for me...(but I have a clever doctor) The SIPS, Modified or a Standard with the 3 meter common channel reduces a lot of the malabsorption, but it still keeps 9 feet of your 28 ft of small intestines,(which is what my dr. did but with a standard DS) making keeping the weight off so much easier. I would much rather take Vitamins the rest of my life than insulin, metformin, glipizide, lose my sight, my feet, my kidneys, etc.
