  1. Hmm, I already bought the gas X strips, but was planning on leaving them here. Did they let you use them in the hospital? My surgery is at 2:30 pm, so I was told I might have to stay 2 nights since not everyone is ready to go in the morning after an afternoon surgery, but I didn't know there were insurances that let you stay 5 nights! I'm thinking I will keep it pretty simple. Obviously I need my phone and charger, but I agree that there should be no need for a bunch of stuff to keep myself occupied. I'm sure I'll sleep more than normal due to the pain meds. Sent from my Nexus 5X using the BariatricPal App

    So. very. SLOW.

    This is my fear. I am starting at the same weight as you, and I worry I won't lose enough because I'll just plateau. I'm also hoping to lose about 90 pounds, but even 80 would be fine. Have you consulted your primary care doctor? Or a registered dietician? Have you had bloodwork to make sure your thyroid, etc. are working OK? Sent from my Nexus 5X using the BariatricPal App

    Pregnant

    Please see both your bariatric surgeon and your gynecologist ASAP because this can be very dangerous. If you choose to remain pregnant you should work very closely with a registered dietician as well as those two doctors. Sent from my Nexus 5X using the BariatricPal App

    Help!

    I agree with all of this. The way I see it, the pre-op diet has 3 functions: to get you to practice making and consuming liquid sources of protein, to empty your stomach completely so you don't aspirate, and to shrink the liver. I knew I wouldn't be able to stick to the pre-op diet, due to the holidays and also a vacation I had planned and paid for before scheduling my sleeve. So I started practicing early. I bought a bunch of different shakes and powders and protein waters about 5 weeks before surgery to see which ones were acceptable and which ones I hated. I went several days in a row with no solid foods and no alcohol, to make sure I could do it. I had also practiced weighing out 2 ounce portions of food and eating tiny bites the month before, so I feel like I've got that down. I went back onto a sober/full liquids diet on Monday night, and when I wake up tomorrow I will just be on Clear Liquids. When I wake up on Thursday, I will have only Water and sugar-free popsicles until noon, and then check into the hospital and eat nothing else until after surgery. So I'm not worried about having any food in my stomach at the time of surgery. And I asked my surgeon about the liver thing. She says there is really no way to tell whose liver will be extra fatty and who will have a nice pliable live that is easy to move out of the way. And, of you think about it, there are people who get this surgery who weigh 300, 400, 500 pounds and even more. Even if those people really do an amazing job on their pre-op diet and lose 50 or 100 pounds, it isn't going to magically shrink their liver smaller than mine. I weigh in the low 200s and my doctor also told me she wanted me to lose 10 pounds, but it hasn't really happened. I weigh maybe 1 or 2 pounds less than I did at my first consult, and I'm fine with that. I just want to get the surgery done with and get those damn hunger hormones out of my body so that I can do the post-op diet progression correctly. That's where you can really get yourself in trouble, eating things you shouldn't while you're healing. Sent from my Nexus 5X using the BariatricPal App
  7. I agree 100%. I usually join a forum online when I'm doing something that is new or interesting or important to me, so I've been on a lot of them: weight loss, travel planning, parenting, and lots of others. Every single one of those boards end up having posts that start with someone posting a story that other members get really caught up in. Then one group will insist that the OP is making the whole thing up. Another group will defend the OP. Everyone behaves badly and I don't get why they engage in it. I wonder, if the people who are against the OP think the OP is lying for attention, then why do they give it to them? People can't just walk on by, I guess. We don't have to post responses to everything we read. If something seems suspicious or outlandish, just don't say anything. Sent from my Nexus 5X using the BariatricPal App

    So.. The Gym?

    I think you should assess whether this is the right gym for you. If everyone there really is skinny, wearing matching Lulu lemon type stuff, then maybe you would be more comfortable at a community gym like the Y. If you already go to a regular gym full of regular people at a variety of weights and fitness levels, then I agree with PPs that you actually need to change your attitude. If you still feel like the fat girl when you've lost 77 pounds (amazing, by the way!) and are just projecting onto other people who probably aren't even thinking about you, then you have to figure out why (psychologically) you feel that way. Yes, there will always be a few rude people around, but most people at most gyms are nice. They are there to lose weight and/or stay healthy, too, and they are mostly interested in making sure they stay on track, not in how you are doing or whether you keep going back. My story

    You look fabulous! How tall are you? I am 5' 2.75" and weigh 225, getting sleeved in 2 weeks. My final goal is 135, but I will be happy as long as I get down to about 160. It seems like that last of reaching goal is the hardest for most people. I'm so impressed that you beat your goal! Sent from my Nexus 5X using the BariatricPal App

    Worried sick;

    Not just bites of beans.. I just mean in general , when I eat anything or drink anything. I'm not eating beans anymore since I just seen I'm supposed to avoid them rn.. strange thing is it doesn't hurt my stomach or bother me so that's what worries me. Am I eating too much?

    I think the problem might be that you aren't weighing your food. I will get my sleeve on the 26th, and once I'm off the liquid diet my plan calls for 2 ounces Protein (eaten slowly, small bites), followed by 2 ounces low-carb veggies (again, slowly with small bites), then, if I'm still hungry, 2 ounces of fruit, and only after that, 2 ounces starchy veggies. I practiced this for a couple of weeks so that I would be used to it and it is pretty hard, but doable. The main thing is to never allow yourself to get hangry. Once my hunger gets to a certain point, I think 'screw it, I'll eat what I want' but if I'm taking in enough liquid and protein, I don't get to that point and I can follow my plan. 14. @@CHM I hear that about the emotions. I've mostly been the "feeling emotions very deeply" type of borderline, but I've certainly had stretches of time when I was shut down and that is even worse. My fiancé is going through the type of defrosting or awakening you describe here, and it has been very hard. I hope you are doing well. *hugs* I did get my final approval and my surgery date, so I am getting my sleeve on 1/26. Can't wait! Sent from my Nexus 5X using the BariatricPal App
  15. There is a big difference between asking a basic question when you don't know the answer and when you do. I assume that is why OP suggested not getting 'defensive and angry' when you are given real answers. I also don't understand how people would have enough money to self-pay, but not enough resources to find information on the internet, at the library, etc. And I stand by my statement that a surgeon who performs any bariatric surgery without providing basic nutritional information and a detailed diet plan for the first 5 weeks post-op, plus guidelines for healthy eating for life, is acting very unethically and irresponsibly and should be sued for malpractice. 16. The worst to me is actually when people say they "shouldn't have been able to eat" a certain thing, so they are mad that their sleeve "isn't working". I am currently on my pre-op diet and it isn't going so great. I'll get into a zone for a day or two where I'm drinking just shakes and Protein Water and I feel great, don't even feel hungry any more. Then I'll slip a little, adding a banana to a protein smoothie, for instance. I don't need to come on here to ask if I can or should add the dumb banana. I know the answer to that. It specifically says next to the list of approved full liquids that I should not add fruit to my smoothies. Everyone who is doing this surgery with a reputable surgeon/practice has a similar list in their binder of information. If I genuinely don't remember if something is allowed by my surgeon, I can always look it up. And one slip becomes two, and two become more, and suddenly I'm standing in the kitchen in the middle of the night eating Ritz crackers with butter and brown sugar on top. So I pick myself back up and start over the next day. What else can I do? But yeah, I don't get all of the "confusion" about which foods are allowed and which aren't. If you didn't learn that in your pre-op phase, you need to pick up your info now and read it thoroughly. And if you lost your info, you need to call your practice for another copy. And if you already ate something you shouldn't have eaten, you need to figure out how you can get back on track, not how you can justify what you've done. 17. I keep hearing that the purpose of the pre-op diet is to shrink/soften the liver, but I can't get a clear answer on how you know if your liver even needs this. My blood work all came back normal. I "only" weigh 222 pounds, with a BMI of 40. From what I can reason out, my liver is already softer and more pliable/movable than the liver of someone who weighed 300+ pounds for years, but have managed to lose 20 or 30 pounds with a pre-op diet. Tempting

    I'm actually starting my diet early for this reason. I don't have surgery until 1/26, but I started Protein shakes for breakfast/lunch/snacks yesterday. This way, I'll be able to enjoy family dinners during this holiday season, but I won't use the holidays as an excuse to cram all kinds of junk in my face all day long. Psyc evaul

    Mine was a 2-hour interview about my weight history, mental health history, general health, why I wanted bariatric surgery, questions about my support systems and relationships, questions to make sure I have realistic expectations of the surgery, etc, followed by about 90 minutes of psychological testing (the MMPI and 3 shorter surveys) Sent from my Nexus 5X using the BariatricPal App
  22. Just saw the last 2 responses when I came on here to update. CHM, I'd be interested to hear what BPD issues have come up for you post-surgery. I am turning 40 next month, so I have also been relatively stable for many years. As far as my update: I did both of my psych eval appointments and my second dietician visit. Now I just have to wait for the psychologist to send the report to the surgeons' office and then wait for the surgeon's office to send the request to my insurance so I can schedule my surgery. I am taking a vacation in mid-january and I was told I can't fly until 6 weeks after surgery, so that means I'll be having surgery at the end of January if everything goes well! Feel like such a failure...

    I would not say losing "only" 100 pounds was a failure! Regardless of your initial weight, losing 100 pounds will have a huge impact on your health. The same is true for the net 80 pounds you have lost, including your regain. As far as a starting place to get back on track with weight loss, have you tried going back to your post-op diet? You could do one day of Clear liquids to cleanse your system and then do a week of Protein shakes to reset your diet. Then go on to very structured meals like you did after surgery: eating 2 ounces of protein, then 2 ounces of non-starchy vegetables, then 2 ounces of fruit. If you are still hungry, you can have 2 ounces of healthy carbs. Sent from my Nexus 5X using the BariatricPal App
  25. I had my first dietician appointment 2 weeks ago and my first psych appointment yesterday. I see both of them again in 2 weeks and they both want me to have made a lot of the dietary changes that I'll need to make post-op by then. I was doing pretty well with weighing out portions, not drinking for 30 minutes after meals, eating foods in the correct order, chewing each bite thoroughly, setting my fork down between bites, etc. for the first week after seeing the dietician. But I didn't lose a single pound that week and it just seemed pointless. So then I had a week-long food funeral, and it was pretty bad. Part of the problem is that I accidentally lost 4 pounds in the week between getting my paperwork in and seeing the surgeon and dietician for the first time. It pisses me off because I wanted to go in at my heaviest and not have my BMI barely be high enough. And now I'm supposed to lose about 10 pounds in the next couple of weeks and it seems impossible. It is more likely that I'll gain that 4 pounds back again, and my surgeon said absolutely no weight gain is allowed. I'm just feeling discouraged right now. I decided to go back to Protein smoothies today instead of trying to allow myself reasonable amounts of real food. Does anyone else feel like they can do a really restrictive diet without too much trouble, but really struggle with trying to eat normally but moderately? I feel like if I have any sweets or anything made with white flour, I simply can't stop eating it. Sent from my Nexus 5X using the BariatricPal App
