    Pregnancy before VSG Surgery

If you seriously want to get the surgery over and done with you better start using some super birth control. Many people get an IUD because fluctuating weight makes the pill have a harder time working. Keep in mind you will also be told not to get pregnant for at least a year after surgery.

    Hair Loss?

Most people start losing hair 3 or 4 months out. It is due to the stress of the surgery and the fact that we are basically starving the first few weeks out. Some people say getting all your Protein in helps but many do everything right and still lose hair. It does grow back.

    Pretty Op Jitters...

Please understand that gallbladder issues can be the result of ANY weight loss, not just surgical weight loss. I had to have my gallbladder out 15 years ago after losing a measly 40 pounds on Weight Watchers. The weight loss is the issue, not the surgery. Most of the other complications are minor and easily treatable. And many other issues are resolved by the surgery. Being obese has much more serious complications long term.

    Sleeve Over Lap Band?

My surgeon is phasing out the band as well. For me it didn't make sense to choose something just because it is reversible. I have no desire to have another surgery and I can't see how I will ever NOT need help battling overeating.

    1 week post op

Do they not give you a number you can call or someone you can email or something to ask questions? Every program is different. My full liquids included things like yogurt.

    Pre op protein question

Each program is different, mine was very flexible, ask you surgeon's office.
  7. I'm the same way! I smelled roast the other day which used to be one of my favorite meals and as soon as I smelled it I got nauseous! Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App I eat a soft scrambled egg every day but I boiled eggs a few days ago and when I tried to peel one the smell was so gross. And I used to love boiled eggs. I am 6 weeks out tomorrow and can hardly eat anything, I keep trying though. Praying it gets better soon!!!!

    Protein Drink and water

It depends on how far out you are, it still takes me a long time at 6 weeks out.

    What to bring too hospital

I think the only things I brought that I used were my phone and charger and a couple of hygiene items. I wore comfy clothes there and wore the same ones home. I wore the hospital gown with another one going the other way so I could walk the halls. Didn't use a robe. The nurses put those non-slip socks on me. I did use my own face wash and toothbrush. And my hairbrush. I brought lip balm (my mouth and lips were really dry) but the hospital provided lip moisturizer for me to use and I just used that one. I brought my heating pad because when I had my gallbladder out years ago I had a lot of gas pain afterwards. I didn't have those pains this time, I had a morphine drip and it was awesome. Some people bring books and things to do but honestly I didn't feel like concentrating on anything like that. I watched tv. I slept. I peed. I walked the halls. That was it. I stayed 2 nights and was glad I did. Most people only stay one night. You really don't need much.
  10. I am 6 weeks out and have severe food aversion. The thought of some foods every makes me sick, and the smells, YUCK. Some things I could eat the first few weeks I can't stand anymore. It seems to change almost daily. I have heard it gets better a few months out. You are totally normal.

    Women - losing hair?

Keeping up with your Protein and Vitamins may help, but many people who do everything right still lose hair. It doesn't start until 3 or 4 months post-op. The good news is it does grow back. Some people think Biotin helps but I have heard it makes some people grow hair in other places (upper lip, chin) I have dark hair. That is not a risk I am willing to take. Washing less helps since washing and combing while wet stresses hair. I plan to get dry shampoo and wash less. I also have been wanting to get a really short hair cut anyway so I may go ahead and do that soon (I am 6 weeks out) I think since my face is thinning out a shorter cut will be cute anyway.

    Pre Op Too Easy

Plenty of people have no pre-op diet and do fine. I had a very easy 3 day one (not liquid, just low carb/low fat) and did fine. The purpose of the pre-op diet is to shrink your liver but during surgery they use a device to lift your liver out of the way anyway. And some surgeons believe the long, liquid pre-op diets don't do that much. If I were you I would just start eating healthier, maybe cut out sugar and caffeine??? And junk food?

    Insurance matters

Every insurance is different but usually a BMI of 40 with no other health problems is approved.

    post op q's!

    1) I had morphine in the hospital and went home with codeine, I would say I had almost no pain 2) Later I developed stomach pain, but I think it is stomach acid, trying different meds from my surgeon, zero incision pain 3) sip, sip all day long, I am thirsty and cold Water goes down good, you may have to try different things like room temp water or flavored water 4) I would say no, they are heavy, I am almost 6 weeks out and still don't even want tight pants on my stomach 5) most surgeons say you can drive after a week as long as you are not on pain meds for at least 24 hours 6) it depends, you are full of fluids from the surgery for a while so most people don't lose much the first couple of weeks, after that there are a lot of variables, people who start at 400 will lose much faster than people who start in the low 200's, and weight loss will be fast the first few months but then slow down drastically 7) most people recover quickly, go back to work at 2 weeks, etc, but my recovery has been really slow 8) no way could I sleep on my stomach the first 3 or 4 weeks but some people do, we have a bed that sits up and that still feels best to me, although by week 5 or so I could sleep on my side, I still don't get on my stomach 9) your surgeon will tell you what to eat, most people do Clear liquids for a while, then full liquids, then pureed foods, etc, by 5 or 6 weeks out most people can eat almost anything, I am the exception, eating again has been very difficult for me, I don't know how most people eat what they do so soon after surgery, like I said I am working with my surgeon to figure out why 10) many people do have moderate hair loss 3 or 4 months out, they SAY if you keep up with your Protein and Vitamins it MAY help you keep you hair, since I have struggled to get that stuff down I am pretty sure I will lose a lot, but it does grow back

    JP Drain

Most people don't have a drain after surgery. I had one and it was supposed to stay in for one week, however, I had issues with it bleeding so my surgeon took it out 4 or 5 days after surgery.

    Compare to a c section

I had 4 vaginal deliveries (super fast recovery every time) and had VSG 6 weeks ago. I also had my gallbladder out years ago. VSG and gallbladder are both done laproscopically. The incisions are very small, people have different numbers of them based on the surgeon. I had 2 about the size of a pencil eraser (teeny) and 2 about 3 inches long at most. I had zero incision pain. I have seen people days after a c-section who could barely walk. After VSG you will be up and walking the halls as soon as the anesthesia wears off.

    Pre-op diet and weakness

Make sure you are getting plenty of Water.
  18. Thank you! Funny thing is, the only thing about it that scares me is being put under. Sent from my HTC One_M8 using the BariatricPal App I guess you have never had surgery before? It really isn't a big deal, you go to sleep and wake up in recovery. Think of it this way, even if your heart stopped during surgery they would be able to start it up again. They have all the equipment they need right there.

    Wow!
  20. Do you track your total calories/protein/carbs for the day? Many people have 3 meals and 2 or 3 Snacks a day and still manage to stay within their allowed calories. If your sleeve is tiny and you can't eat much at meals you may need to snack, as long as the snacks are healthy. Some people say after surgery they are never hungry but many don't.

    Tired and run down

As long as you are getting all your water and protein in there is nothing else you can do. Every person is going to give you a different answer as to when they felt "normal" again but I can tell you that even at almost 6 weeks out I rest a little every afternoon. We are recovering from major surgery.

    Feeding Family

Are you pre-op? I have struggled with food aversion and low appetite so much since my surgery the thought of eating what they are eating makes me ill. I know I would throw it right back up. My sleeve, even almost 6 weeks out, is very tiny. My husband does most of the cooking and my kids are too old to complain about anything, so often I just go to my room so I don't even have to smell it. I know some people are chomping at the bit to eat but I wasn't, I am still taking it slow and couldn't just chow down on whatever even if I wanted to.

    Starving

Try a thicker protein shake, those helped me at that stage.

    Bubbles

Are you on any meds for stomach acid? Some surgeons give them to everyone after surgery, I had to ask for them at 4 or 5 weeks out. I still have some gurgling but it has gotten better.
