    Today is my day

Good luck! I understand you are nervous and excited at the same time, I can't wait until it's my turn! Sent from my Nexus 6P using the BariatricPal App
  2. First of all, a fat child usually does not become a trim, healthy adult. The odds are stacked against that, especially if she has a medical problem.Secondly, the idea that a person can be obese and healthy is wrong. Obesity is a leading cause of diabetes, high blood pressure and cancer. Many obese people in their teens, 20's and even 30's don't have any obesity related health problems, but that is almost never the case for obese people in their 40's, 50's and beyond. It catches up with us. There is no such thing as a healthy obese 65 year old. This isn't just about vanity. We aren't fat shaming and we don't hate ourselves for being obese. Being 100 pounds overweight will take 10 years off my life. When you are young you may not care, but I have 4 young adult children. I want to be here to meet their children and watch them grow up. My kids, ages 18-25, are all healthy weight. You better believe I would be concerned if any of them were overweight. As others have said, PCOS is more common than you think. It can lead to infertility and many other health issues. If this were my daughter I would at least want to rule out any possible medical issues. Then after that I would work with a nutritionist to help her. Sent from my Nexus 6P using the BariatricPal App

    Still "seeing" the old me

I have never, ever heard of anyone losing that much and having minimal skin. Wow. I watch a lot of YouTube videos with loose skin after WLS and most are pretty bad. You may need counseling if you can't learn to count your blessings. Sent from my Nexus 6P using the BariatricPal App

    Proof of weight loss attempts

She was AWESOME during my last pregnancy and all that but once I was out of the baby needs, it went down hill. I have a whole new dr now (I brought up WLS to her about 6 MO or so ago and she kinda brushed it off , like eh you don't want to do that) I swear I'm 100 plus over weight, aren't drs supposed to be up my ass about that! I don't have an appointment with a surgeon yet but I am going too the info session this wednesday, hopefully I'll know more after! Sent from my SAMSUNG-SM-G900A using the BariatricPal App First of all, I AM 100 pounds overweight. I have had the same PCP for 11 years. My weight has been a little higher every time I go to see her and a couple of years ago she put me on mild blood pressure meds. She has told me to try Weight Watchers and/or try to cut carbs. That's about it. She doesn't get overly upset about my weight, recommend a nutritionist, or anything of the sort. I don't even bring up WLS with her, I KNOW she would not be on board with me having it. I checked to see what my insurance covers and went to see one of the surgeons they recommend in early August. The paperwork I filled out before the visit asked me to list all the things I had tried in the past to lose weight. It was actually a check list, so I checked Weight Watchers multiple times, Jenny Craig twice, MediFast, etc. They did not need specific dates or any proof. They did ask about the most I had ever lost with any program and if I was able to keep it off. Other than that all I needed for my insurance was a psych eval. I did that and it was all sent to my insurance for approval. My insurance does not require a supervised diet plan or multiple nutritionist visits. Most do. As far as the history of your weight loss attempts I don't think I have heard of any insurance requiring proof. Some DO require clearance for surgery from your PCP, but I have been told there are ways around that if your doctor is not on board with WLS. Mine is not, I am not going to tell her, my surgeon said that was fine.

    Jealous friends?

I should add, I don't see it so much as my friends are not supportive. And they won't be jealous either. Because honestly out of my 7 or 8 close female friends only one WAS overweight and she has lost it though diet and exercise. The reason I don't want to tell them is that I will get the "you could do this on your own" comments. Slender people think if we just did what THEY do we would all be slim too. They have no idea how hard it is for someone who is morbidly obese to get the weight off and keep it off. These are people who think they are "fat" when they "need to lose 10 pounds". And they buckle down and do it so they think I should be able to do the same. Out of my extended group of "friends" (hundreds of people from church and other activities our family has participated in over the years) there are several who probably need to lose 50 or 60 pounds, nowhere near as heavy as I am. I do have one friend in this group who lost a tremendous amount of weight a couple of years ago. According to another friend this woman did have WLS but doesn't want everyone to know. Honestly, this is one reason I may spill the Beans after I start losing weight. I hate that it has to be seen as something shameful

    Jealous friends?

At first we lose quickly, but let's face it unless you are really low BMI no one is going to notice when you lose 30 or so pounds. After that they will start to notice but by then we will be losing much more slowly like a regular diet. I have a friend who has lost over 200 pounds with diet and exercise. No one noticed until she had lost close to 100 pounds. Then people started saying she lost it overnight. Not really, she had been working on it for like a year. They just didn't notice until you could REALLY see it. I plan to not tell anyone outside of my husband and kids until people start noticing and asking. After that I may tell some people, especially those who could benefit themselves. I have mixed feelings because I wish there wasn't such a stigma attached to WLS. $$Money$$

I have never heard of an elective procedure where they did not tell you beforehand how much you are going to have to pay. Most hospitals are going to do pre-check-in verification of insurance. They will know how much your insurance will pay and how much you are responsible for before they even admit you. With my surgeon you can back out up to 24 hours before the surgery. My guess is many people chicken out but I would guess that some people back out, or postpone, due to not having the funds for their co-pay yet. That being said most hospitals offer credit to help you pay the rest, you would just be paying back with interest. A co-pay is still going to be cheaper than going to Mexico.
  10. Are you concerned about being able to lose it and keep it off? I am pre-surgery but from what I am hearing it's fairly easy to lose for the first year or so, after that you have to work at it by watching what you eat and exercising. Go on YouTube and search for VSG. You will see many, many people who are 2, 3, even 5 or so years out. Most will have a slight regain unless they keep working at it. That being said they look amazing! Statistically a person who loses 50 pounds (and let's face it, most of us have much more than that to lose) has only about a 2% chance of keeping it off for 5 years. Stats for WLS are much better than that. I just know, for me with 100 pounds to lose, the likelihood of doing it without surgery is close to zero. I need the jump start.

    Bariatric WLS Products

I plan to try several Protein shakes (pre-made and powdered) before surgery. I prefer the ones that let you buy a sample size, you don't want to buy some huge bottle of something you don't end up liking. You are going to get a lot of different answers, everyone likes different things, but keep in mind that many people say their taste buds change after surgery so don't buy too much of anything. You may end up thinking a product you loved before surgery tastes awful, and vice versa. I like the idea of unflavored powders you can mix with regular foods. Most people say they get tired of those sweet shakes really quickly!
  12. Amen sister, preach it! I just don't understand at all, if someone loves you they WANT you to be healthy. Obesity takes years off of peoples' lives. If the person you are with doesn't want you to live a long and healthy life kick them to the curb! I do think you hit the nail on the head, though, when you said you settled for your first husband. Sadly I think many people settle because they think they can't do any better

    No support from boyfriend

Is he overweight? I have a very supportive husband but your story is pretty common. I gotta say I don't understand it at all. Is he worried you will leave him after you lose weight? Many relationships end after one person has WLS, you have to do this for you if you really want to do it.

    Feeling

I don't have a surgery date yet but I do know there are about a million different protein shakes out there, you are going to have to try a few I guess to figure out which ones you like. I have a feeling I will like all of them, at least pre-op. I am the least picky person on the planet. BUT, most people say their taste buds change after surgery. So don't buy too much now. I just got a small Ninja blender from Kohl's and I love it, but you can also use those shaker bottles for most of the powdered shakes. The blender is good if you want to add ice or frozen fruit, etc. Good luck to you!

    Why does the lapband fail

That is what my surgeon says. He doesn't even want to do them anymore. He believes many people abuse the band (his words) by figuring out how to eat around it. Sent from my Nexus 6P using the BariatricPal App

  21. The way my surgeon explained it is......obese people are much more likely to need OTHER surgeries down the road such as hip or knee replacements. The risks involved with those surgeries are much higher than WLS risks. Being 100 pounds overweight will take 10 years off your life. Down the road all obese people face high risks of diabetes and heart disease. Both are responsible for millions of deaths a year. Actually, c-sections are more risky than WLS. And lots of people have those (some even want them versus vaginal delivery)

    How to eat

Yes, you are consuming very few calories and living off of stored fat. That is why people lose so much at first. However, you can't live long at all without Water. That is why you have to force yourself to drink water. Many people get dehydrated and end up back in the hospital. You also need to start getting Protein as soon as you can (well, following your doctor's plan) so people drink Protein drinks, slowly, small sips. For the first couple of weeks people are getting very few calories but then they increase little by little as they add more food.

    Help! Please!

Did you have the sleeve? What kind of pain? Most people are walking right after surgery and doing pretty well by the time they get home.

    Have to make yourself eat

You need to get your fluids and Protein in. Try new things. I am pre-surgery but have found several websites with food suggestions for each stage along the way. This is a great one: http://theworldaccordingtoeggface.blogspot.com

When are you going to stop losing weight?

I agree, they are just not used to seeing you NOT morbidly obese. Honestly I would be tempted to tell them "I am 5'8", according to healthy weight charts I need to be between 125 and 163 pounds to be considered normal, I am working hard to get down to somewhere within that range". Seriously, I hate it when people say things like that to those who are trying to get down to a healthy weight. All of my kids are adults and healthy weight. My oldest daughter is 5'4" and weighs around 115, which is within the NORMAL range of healthy. While some women seem jealous of her size no one has ever told her she looks too skinny (she still has a butt and hips, believe me). They have never seen her any larger.
