    Protein Shakes Preop

Pre-surgery I liked most of the powders, Quest has some good flavors. I mixed them with almond milk and ice and whizzed them in the Ninja. It was like an ice milk shake. Post surgery I am struggling with all of them. I have tried 10 different kinds, pre-made and powders. They are all so sweet and fake tasting and have a terrible aftertaste. And they are upsetting my stomach. I ordered GENEPRO today, they is some controversy around it but I have got to find something I can handle.

    TMI diarrhea post op

I am 6 days post-op and have had diarrhea too, but not that bad. I don't think taking Immodium will hurt you, I had chronic diarrhea for years after having my gallbladder out 15 years ago and my doctor said it was okay to take it as much as I needed to. But maybe call your surgeon and ask to be sure??
  3. Didjit, Be careful buying ahead too much. Most of WLS peeps have their taste change after their Surgery. Agreed. I am one week post-op tomorrow and I am so sick of sweet I could puke. And I DID used to love sweets. I am going out for GENEPRO and Fair Life milk tomorrow. I can't wait to eat eggs, meat, cheese, nuts......oh my it is driving me batty!!
  4. I will be a week post-op tomorrow. I have not vomited, they don't want you to vomit. I will be a week post-op tomorrow. I have not vomited, they don't want you to vomit.

    Weird question...

I left on my clothes and shoes. I was right at BMI 40, the surgeon WANTS insurance to pay so they don't force you to strip (at least mine didn't)
  6. Just had my final pre-op visit with my surgeon, I will see him again bright and early Monday morning at the hospital. Anyone else going in for surgery on Halloween??? Excited and nervous
  7. It seems like it also depends on where you carry your weight. I mean, most overweight people have big tummies but some have relatively thin arms and legs, etc. Some start out with D cups and others start out with DDD cups. I am similar to you, I will have my sleeve surgery tomorrow and hope to lost 100 pounds at most. Actually losing 75 pounds would make me happy. But I don't worry about loose skin at all. I am 54 years old, I am never going to wear a bikini again and my husband is not going to complain no matter what. I have had 4 huge babies, I doubt my stomach would be perfect even if I wasn't overweight. Shape wear is a wonderful thing, even thin people wear it, it's a multi-million dollar industry. Even people who lose without surgery have excess skin. Go to YouTube and search WLS, RNY, VSG, and loose skin, people call them "skin flicks". You will see almost everyone has loose skin no matter how fast they lose or what they do trying to avoid it. Working out with weights does help, especially the arms and legs, because the toned muscles fill in the loose skin a little.

    Which surgery?

My surgeon doesn't do the lapband anymore either, just too many complications and so many people have to go back and have them removed with conversion to another surgery. You will lose the most, quickly, with RNY. But the sleeve is a very good option and quickly becoming the first choice for most people. Make an appointment and go talk to the surgeon, you have quite a bit of weight to lose. I am BMI 40 and will have my sleeve surgery tomorrow morning. Good luck with your decision.
  9. Wow, so many others having surgery on Halloween. Good luck to all of you

    Appointment

    Best of luck to you!
  12. My surgery is on Monday. I think a lot of people have the "what if I fail?" or "what if it doesn't work for me?" thoughts going in. I just keep telling myself I trust my surgeon and his staff and I will take it one day at a time, just doing what they say. They have all kinds of experience with people of all ages, different starting weights, slow losers, etc. I will do what they say and keep asking for help if I need it.

    TOMORROW IS THE BIG DAY!

Best of luck to you, I have my surgery on Halloween!
  14. YES! A leak will land you back in the hospital and could be deadly. I interviewed 2 surgeons before deciding who would do my surgery. BOTH said the only time they had ever had a patient re-admitted to the hospital with a leak was when the patient went home and ATE SOMETHING THEY HAD BEEN TOLD NOT TO EAT. One was bar-b-q. Can you even imagine having bar-b-q floating around loose in your abdominal cavity? Disgusting!
  15. Yes!!! I seen that particular post I actually felt sorry for the person I was like dang we come here for motivation and advice not to be scolded like little children. Sent from my SM-G900T1 using the BariatricPal App Eating solid food at 5 days out is dangerous. There are far too many people here saying "don't worry about it, I did it and I'm fine" when it's flat out DANGEROUS. I never once said it wasn't DANGEROUS however we are all grown and no what we are suppose to be doing she as I said scolding someone as if they are your child is ridiculous Yes!!! There are far too many people here saying "don't worry about it, I did it and I'm fine" when it's flat out DANGEROUS. I never once said it wasn't DANGEROUS however, we are all grown and NO exactly what we are suppose to be doing and eating in the different stages... She knew she was wrong for eating that piece of chicken which is why she wrote that post in the first place.....Like I said scolding someone as if they're your child is ridiculous..... Sent from my SM-G900T1 using the BariatricPal App Honestly, I think a lot of people do NOT know what they are supposed to be eating and not eating. I didn't see that post, but lots of people ask questions here about things they should have been taught by their medical team. How can you go home from just having most of your stomach removed and have no idea what you are supposed to be eating and avoiding??

    Has anyone cheated ?

In my program everything that a spoon can't stand up in is a liquid, so yogurt may not be a cheat at all depending on what the OP has been told. I am surprised that people don't pay more attention, have a list of approved foods on the fridge, and go shopping before the surgery. My surgery is next Monday and you better believe I am going to stock up on everything I am allowed to eat. Even if I don't feel hungry I know I am going to be weak and shaky with such a low amount of calories going in. I know I am going to have to take it slow but you better believe I am going to try anything and everything my team says is okay as soon as they say it's okay.

    Why no preop diet?

@@teacherjen my doc told me i don't have to do a pre-op diet when i asked him why, he merely said "he didn't believe in them" ?? i was also concerned. - only read that OP have pre-op diet i was surprised when i periodically read from OP didn't have pre-op diet good to know that i wasn't alone i've always regretted that i didn't put myself on some pre-op diet ie doing liquids on my own - oh well, hindsight good luck kathy I would like to know why too, it looks like you have done awesome with your weight loss! I think for me, personally, I am glad I don't have to do a long pre-op diet. When I diet I get so weak and run down. I would much rather go into the surgery feeling strong. I know many others disagree with this. They feel it helps them get used to surviving on very few calories. I don't think I would get used to that in a couple of weeks, I think I would just feel like crap for 2 weeks and then continue to feel like crap after the surgery until I can get some food in again. I understand everyone is different though.

    Why no preop diet?

A lot of people have to do several months of nutritionists visits and dieting before they get approved. Many of the California people who have Kaiser insurance have to do this. The reason is that you need to learn an entirely new way of eating. You need to learn portion control and how to make healthy choices. The surgery isn't a magic bullet, if we have it and go back to eating the way we ate before we won't lose the weight and keep it off. Sadly many people gain most of all of their weight back after weight loss surgery. That being said my insurance, BCBS Texas didn't require any kind of diet at all before approval. I am barely heavy enough to have them pay for the surgery anyway. If I did a diet for several months my BMI would go down too low for them to pay for the surgery. Every insurance and surgeon is different. Maybe as time goes on they will all become more regimented, or maybe not??

    Making the decision

Most people regret it at first when they feel bad. There have been a couple of people on here who regret it much longer, look at the complications board and you will see people who are having a bad time. But even those people usually are happy they had the surgery once they get past the hurdles. My surgery is on Halloween. I can't wait! Go to YouTube and search WLS, VSG, RNY, etc. It is amazing to watch people VLOG their journey, they look so different after the weight loss. I guess most people miss being able to pig out sometimes, like on vacation, but being thin and healthy is so much better. You still have to work at weight loss, and keeping it off, for the rest of your life. But doing it without the surgery has a very low long term success rate. I know I can't lose it and keep it off without the surgery.

47 years old. 1 week post op Sleeve

Impossible to answer because everyone is different. Many people have a stall around week 3. Be sure you are getting your Water and Protein in, and increase your calories when your surgeon says to. Calorie intact that is TOO low can actually make things worse sometimes.

    Finally Approved

Congrats! My surgery is on Halloween!

    QUESTION? NEW HERE

Every insurance and surgeon is different. I started the whole process in early August and my surgery is next Monday. My surgeon only does a 3 day pre-op. Good luck to all of you!
  23. Most people add unflavored Protein powder to their food to get daily protein up, especially when on the liquid or soft diet phases. Pretty impossible to get enough at those times without supplementing.
  24. Some people think the hair loss is a reaction to the surgery itself, not necessarily the weight loss, but who knows? I do know people who have lost large amounts of weight without surgery, at a regular pace, and still have lots of excess skin. It really depends on how much you lose and where you carried the weight.

    DON'T KNOW WHAT TO DO!

I am having my surgery next Monday and I am so happy to have my healthy husband to take care of the house (and me) after the surgery. We have older kids and he can make them help with cooking, laundry, etc. I know you aren't bedridden after surgery but I had my gallbladder out years ago and made the mistake of going to the grocery store just a few days later by myself, I hurt my stomach just lifting a really heavy bottle of laundry detergent. I won't make that mistake this time. You won't be able to lift your toddler for a few weeks after the surgery, honestly I would space them out a couple of months on purpose.
