    Quitting smoking

My doctor said he wanted me smoke free for 6 weeks prior to surgery, admittedly I did not follow orders. I quit 21 days before my nicotine test which was done at my pre-op testing 1 week prior to surgery. I wish I had quit sooner as I was told to but I had a horrible time quitting, vaping did not work for me and chantix gave me weird nightmares. In the end my desire to have surgery win out and I quit cold turkey.

3lb loss almost two weeks out

I am doing well, all pain is gone now, I am on soft foods and tolerating th very well. I reduced my calories for a while and I have now lost 25 pounds. Thanks for asking. How are you doing?
  3. I had my surgery on Dec 5, Monday will be two weeks. I have only lost 3 pounds so far and I'm feeling a little discouraged. I average between 700-900 calories a day, I get all my protein and fluids in. I feel absolutely no restriction, I can eat 1/2 cup of soup, cream of wheat, a full 5oz yogurt whatever. Is it possible to fail at this? According to my fitness pal I'm eating way less calories than needed to lose weight so I'm confused and discouraged.

    Belly noises

The gurgling noise is normal after gastric sleeve surgery, your stomach will make all sorts of funny noises for a while.
  5. @@Monesty How many calories is that total for the day? It seems like a lot. I'm only 4 WkS out but couldn't take in near that much in a day. Are you exercising in any way? Also your water intake has got to be higher, 26 oz is not nearly enough, a minimum of 64 oz is needed and this will help with your weights too.
  6. In order to help you we really would need to know a little more like how many calories are you taking in a day? How much protein? How many carbs? Are you tracking all of this? If not you should start. I use myfitnesspal to track everything. Plus realize that you did start with a lower bmi so your loss will be slower than say mine because I started at 316 pounds so I'm gonna take off more a lot quicker until I reach a lower bmi.

    No one told me!

My doctor told me that I can take Miralax up to two times a day and add a stool softener. I always take the miralax twice and if it's been a few days since I've been able to go then I add a stool softener. Works so much better then right after surgery when I didn't go for over a week, it was terrible.

    Egg white

I was put on soft foods at week 2, they told me to avoid hard boiled eggs for now. My first soft food was a scrambled egg and it went fine.
  9. On the contrary PCOS can cause you to lose weight slower even with the sleeve. But it's nothing to be worried about, you will still lose way more than you would have without the sleeve.

Pain Meds - How Long Did You Take?

Well I was on a high dose of Percocet for back pain prior to surgery so they had to send me home on dilaudid for pain. I had quite a bit of pain around my main incision for two weeks and took the dilaudid up until then. After about two weeks I switched to Tylenol. Now 3.5 weeks out and no longer taking anything for pain.

    2 week appointment with surgeon

@@megetslim no reason to be bummed out, we all lose at different rates. At my two week appointment I had only lost 10 pounds. I am now 3.5 weeks out and I have lost 24! It just took my body a little longer to realize it was supposed to be losing steadily. Now I am prepared that I should be hitting my first stall any day now. Don't compare yourself to others and relax, the weight will come off and it will come off faster than it ever would have prior to surgery. Keep your head up
  12. My surgeon allowed me to take pills right away, even my large ones as long as I could swallow and tolerate them. I had very little swelling and inflammation so not even my large pills presented a problem.

    Stop smoking

I quit smoking before my surgery to pass my nicotine test and I'm not gonna lie I hated it. I quit 21 days before my test . It sucked but I had to do it, I even postponed my surgery twice because I was having trouble quitting smoking, but in the end I buckled down and quit because the surgery was so important to me. Vamping did not work for me, I had to quit cold turkey. The truth is if you want it bad enough you will find a way to do it. And btw I smoked for over 20 yrs prior to quitting.

    Starting to 2nd think!

First of all you will only get as small as you want to, that much is directly up to you, if you track your daily calories like you should then it is your choice when you decide to up your calories and go into maintenance. Second while there is a chance of complications hence the "getting sick" part they are rare. And past the initial recovery you should be just fine. I am three weeks out I feel fine and I haven't even so much as vomited once. Third you should forget about what everyone else thinks and worry about what you think. The odds are not in your favor for taking off the weight and maintaining the weight loss on your own, so if surgery is what you think is best for you then you should do it and concentrate on being positive, leave the negative chatter out of your mind. Most people don't even know enough about the different weight loss surgeries to be able to comment on them with any type of an education. Do what's best for you! Ultimately it's you that has to live with the decision. Personally I don't regret my decision one bit.

    Question about sleeping positions

I am a side and stomach sleeper, knowing that this would be a problem right before surgery I bought 4 brand new big pillows, when I came home from the hospital I arranged three of them in an incline and one on the top for my head. I also had two body pillows, one at each side for my arms. I found that I was so comfortable in my fluffy surroundings that I didn't move all night and I slept just fine. I can sleep on my stomach again now, but I often only switch to that mid morning a couple hours before waking now.

    Drunk water after eating

Yes I made that mistake the other day, I am almost three weeks out from my sleeve surgery and I nearly lost my lunch when I did, it was an awful feeling. I won't make that mistake again.

What other apps do u guys use

LMAO welcome to the world of Internet forums, this one is actually quite a bit nicer than most Bariatric forums. So my advice Suck it up Buttercup!
  18. Hang tight for the anxiety of waiting for the insurance approval, mine had a problem at two weeks and had to be resubmitted so took a full 4 weeks for approval, I was a nervous wreck the whole time.

    Requirements before surgery

It really depends on your surgeon requirements, you will find out more at your initial consultation. By that time they should have consulted your insurance company and prepared a checklist for you to complete. I didn't have a medically supervised diet to complete for my insurance, but it still took me nearly three months from my initial consultation to surgery date because I had to meet my surgeons requirements to see a cardiologist, a pulmonologist, and a psychiatrist. Some of those appointments take time to get in. So it just depends on what your surgeon requires and then how busy his surgery schedule is when it comes time to schedule, also how long it takes to get your insurance approval. My insurance approval took 4 weeks after I was done with my requirements. Hang in there, the time goes faster than you think and before you know it you will be posting that surgery is a few days away and the nerves are setting in.

    Skipping Christmas Parties

I was on my pre-op diet during Thanksgiving and opted not to go to my family Thanksgiving dinner because I knew that I wouldn't be able to resist the food . My family understood and were supportive of my decision. Ultimately I think you have to do what's best for you, this is only one Christmas, next year you will be in a much better position to eat only very tiny amounts. Ask yourself if you can truly avoid the temptations present at the parties left while you are on your diet, if you think the answer is No then you owe to yourself to make your apologies and bow out gracefully. But take care of yourself first this year only before worrying about what everyone else thinks.
  21. @@Michelle6 the honest answer is when your doctor says you can. I'm a little over two weeks out and on soft foods which includes fish, soft cheeses like mozzarella string cheese, ground meat, chili consistency food. My doctor said I could progress to regular food in 3 more weeks . You are way to early to be eating regular food and it would be very dangerous for you to do so, even life threatening. Don't do it. Follow your plan. That's the real deal. You had the surgery, now you have to make the responsible food choices for your health, this is not a magic fix, you have to do the work too. Stay safe with your eating and good luck

    No Support

My 100 pound chocolate lab does the same thing sniff and pull in the opposit direction sometimes and I was able to handle walking her fairly soon probably three days post op, the pulling didn't really bother me as it really only pulled on my arm not my stomach and the walking is good, they want you up and walking as much as possible as soon as possible.

    Denied

If your in a state where Medicaid covers Bariatric surgery than you can be approved. Just call and find out what their guidelines for approval are or have your surgeons office verify and resubmit when you have met the guidelines. However if you are in a state where it is still not covered by Medicaid than unfortunately yes self pay would be your only option, look into Mexico options for much easier financing.

    Anyone else this sore!

I am two weeks out yesterday, I went to the doctor for checkup today. I still have terrible pain on the left side under my main incision, it hurts when I move basically, when I walk or get in and out of bed, in and out of car etc. I asked the doctor about it and he said it's completely normal. He agreed with me that his higher bmi patients tend to have longer lasting pain from more fat pulling on their stitches in their muscles and explained to me that that's what my pain was, the stitches in the muscular layers still causing me pain. He told me " don't let the small incisions fool you, you had major abdominal surgery and you will be in pain for a while" and he said think of those incisions like you were in a knife fight and you got stabbed very deeply five times, it will take significant time to heal. So rest your fears the pain is normal. As for the people with no pain two days out, they were extremely lucky. But your pain is normal and does not indicate in any way that something is wrong.
