    Undecided on what to do

It's your decision, but I would say to have the surgery. You'll only put on more weight over time, and then get more and more obesity related illnesses. There is nothing wrong with using medicine to get you to where you want to be. Especially now that you have a family that needs you to be around, it's important to think long term. Sassy comebacks?

This doesn't directly answer your question, but I just wanted to say that it is crazy how people think it's okay to comment/openly criticize other people's bodies. Family or not, this can be very traumatizing. And it's also crazy how differently society treats skinny versus any level of fat. If they give you any grief, you tell them that you were amazing and worthwhile before and it's a shame that it took weight loss for them to treat you that way (and that you're obviously amazing and worthwhile now still). ❤️ Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App

    Waves of emotions

I get nervous sometimes because I've never had surgery before. I've noticed that I'm getting a bit more nervous as I move closer and closer toward having surgery. I make the nervousness go away by realizing that the surgery does have risks, but I wouldn't categorize it as "dangerous". You usually have to get some testing done to make sure that you will do okay during surgery. The complication rate is also very low. These things make me feel better, especially since I feel like out of control obesity is much more dangerous. But I am also more and more excited. I get more excited to know that next summer, I might be 80-100 pounds lighter. I get excited that maybe some of my long term back pain might go away with less weight. I get excited to try running again (which I loved as a kid). It's normal to switch back and forth between emotions, though. And if you're worried about negative comments, keep your surgery to yourself. That's my plan (for the most part, I've told a few people--3 friends and my boyfriend who I live with, and my parents). I don't need anyone else's opinion or negativity. Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App

Let's all brush up on our critical thinking skills!

I saw that! Its amazing how in his post he acted like the victim, even though he was being an ass to everyone. And then he had the audacity to call the post "unjustly kicked out", LOL. Some people will go to crazy lengths to justify their terrible habits that got them to obesity in the first place. This guy seems like a lost cause. Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App

    My Father is against surgery

If you don't want to deal with negativity, don't tell people who you know don't support you. Especially in the pre op and early post op stages it seems like having a solid support group around you is supremely important (so I've read, I'm still pre-op). It might be too late for your dad (since it seems like you might have told him) but keep that in mind for other people in your life. I'm 27 and I told my parents only as a FYI. In these kinds of situations you need to worry about your goals and happiness! ❤️ Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App
  8. Aw, sorry you missed their call. Maybe add in their number to your phone so it's not unknown anymore. I'm the same way, I hate telemarketers so I do not answer numbers that I don't know! Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App

    Depressed

I'm someone who feels better when I am planning ahead. I do this with almost every aspect of my life. This works well when I am feeling down, as well. Plan your meals for the week, better yet, meal prep! Try to make them high Protein and low carb like you'll be eating post op. Maybe make a list of non-scale victories that you're excited to reach. I have tons of clothes from all different sizes, so one day I organized all the clothes. I make a throw out (too torn up to donate), a donate pile (things that are good but I wouldn't personally enjoy wearing again), and clothes to keep, which I organized by size. Sorry for all the examples, but basically I feel like planning things out that will move you closer to your goals will make you feel better. Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App

    Fatty Liver

I think most overweight and obese people have fatty liver. That's why most surgeons require either a strict diet or a completely liquid diet prior to surgery, in order to shrink the liver so that it won't be in the way during the surgery. I wouldn't worry about it; it can go away with weight loss. Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App

    Period?

My periods are late when I'm super stressed out and surgery is stressful on the body, so I think this is fairly common. I would say to take a pregnancy test (if that's a concern for you), and wait a bit. If it still doesn't come in a few days, maybe make an appointment with your obgyn? They can give you pills to induce your period. Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App

  13. Sometimes a "puffier" face is also associated with hypothyroidism (low thyroid). I know from my own experience that once I was diagnosed and on medicine my face de-puffed a lot. Just a thought. But I still hope to lose some weight in the face area! Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App

    Nutritionist or Psychologist

Well my nutritionist did more than talk about good food choices versus bad ones. Mine also talked to be about the changes that come post op, which is helpful. While I agree with you main point, I saw the nutritionist because that's what my insurance required to approve my surgery. Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App

  18. This is going to sound harsh, but I don't mean it to be. You had surgery, they didn't. You have to learn to control your food choices, not theirs. They are not ready to change their lifestyle and probably don't appreciate you telling them what and how to eat, the same way you probably didn't like to be told that you were eating crap prior to making your lifestyle change. People have to make those changes on their own terms. However, there is another issue here. I feel that your boyfriend and mom are being unsupportive if they aren't even trying to be mindful of what they eat in front of you. I don't know your relationship, but if my boyfriend (we've been together 6 years and live together) did that to me so soon after surgery, we would be done. It's disrespectful and shows that he isn't invested in your success. He doesn't have to eat well, but should at least be able to not eat crap in front of you for a few weeks while you adjust. Psych Eval tomorrow

Awesome! I'm seeing Dr. Lutfi out of Presence St. Joseph in Chicago. I personally would find it a pain to trek out to the suburbs for the psych eval as someone who lives in the city and doesn't drive much. But I'm glad they found someone that takes Medicaid. I guess very few psychologists accept it. Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App

    Boobs and bras. :-)

I really like Torrid's (if you're still plus sized) bralettes. No wires, and because they are stretchy you can size down and get a better fit. http://www.torrid.com/intimates/bralettes-bandeaus/ I'm sure non plus size lines have bralettes too. Plus they're cute! Psych Eval tomorrow

You make a good point. The long term costs of obesity (and all of the other conditions that may come with obesity) are high. It's better to pay for the surgery to eliminate these conditions than pay for a lifetime of potential expensive illness and medical care. It's unfortunate that money is the bottom line for insurance companies, but at least in this instance it works in our favor, in terms of WLS being covered. Psych Eval tomorrow

I have the same Medicaid program and the surgeons office that I go to looked and looked and couldn't find one in my area (Chicago), so they just referred me to the online eval. It cost $150 bucks but I did appreciate the convenience. Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App

    Post op hair loss

I have not been sleeved yet, but my nutritionist said that it usually starts to happen between 3 and 5 months post-op. She also said that although some people think the hair loss is based on not taking your Vitamins or not hitting your Protein goals, it's not. While those things are important, the hair loss is just a side effect of the stress the your body goes through after surgery. People are different, some have a minimal hair loss, others have more. And my nutritionist said that it should stop around 1 year post op. Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App

    Psych Eval tomorrow

I totally agree, mental health should be treated on an equal level with physical health and it's not in the United States. The online/over the phone evaluations just fill a need that people who are self pay or have less than stellar insurance (like myself), where you need the evaluation for surgery but can't see an in person therapist for financial reasons. But I agree, in a perfect world, all insurance would provide coverage for mental health services and prior to bariatric surgery would be a good time to spend some time with a mental health professional. What kind of research do you do? That sounds really fascinating! Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App
