  1. I have had my first Iron infusion and it isn't that bad.

Out of curiosity, how is an Iron infusion conducted?

I am 3 years post-op RNY gastric bypass. After my first yearly blood workup, they noted that I was iron deficient.

So I was asked to take an iron supplement. They asked me to take Ferrous Sulfate. Apparently there are two types of chemical formulations on iron supplements and Ferrous Sulfate is the best absorbed.

I thought that perhaps my deficiency might be related to when I took my iron supplements. Iron and Calcium do not mix. There has to be time spacing of at least two hours between taking them. Although I tried to give it some separation I drank milk and thought perhaps the Calcium in milk might be interfering with my irons. So I moved all my iron supplements to the end of the day just before bedtime. My next annual blood workup showed iron was O.K.

  2. Thank you for this my story is so similar. I had to stop reading because I started crying hearing your story about the pains and suffering with the band. I think it's time to have mine removed but it's that uncertainty my doctor has told me the same of gaining more weight after. I think it's time though....thank you for sharing.

I have had my lapband removed and have lost weight. It's all in how you eat and what you eat and a little exercising or walking so that the weight does not get out of control. You are in control of your body andbyour food intake. My dietician who is most helpful has provided me with great advice. Upon removal of my band, it makes good sense to go back to the eating habits prior to and after the surgery for my band.

Sandy, congratulations on your successful surgery. I am reading different posts about the incisions. What type of incision did you get for the Gastric Bypass surgery?

I live in Northwest Indiana. Just had a band removal and in 3 months will be having the Gastric Bypass surgery. Looking for a buddy/friend/mentor or someone who is familiar with it to go through it with me.

Hello everyone my name is Jonte and I am 3 yrs post op. My starting weight was 390 and my lowest weight was 250. I was slowly working my way down to my personal goal weight of 215 when I became pregnant with my second child. attachicon.gif 20160308_082812.jpg

Now six weeks post pregnancy I am getting back in gear to loss the 65 pounds to make it to my goal weight. Unfortunately I have moved away from Indiana were I had my surgery completed at St Vincent's in Carmel but the dieticians have been amazing with mailing and emailing me what I need as well as providing phone support. One of the best things about the gastric bypass is if your willing to put in the work you are able to see the results no matter how far out you are. So here's to my new journey and a big congratulations to those of you just beginning your journey. If you have questions please please please feel free to ask. I am an open book.

Congratulations on everyyhing!!! I am also a resident of Indiana and planning on having the gastric bypass surgery. I had my lapband removed and recovering from it now and in 3 months will be having the gastric bypass surgery. Did you have the gastric bypass or the sleeve? How long did it take you to rrecovwr from your gastric bypass surgery. I have taken 3 weeks off from wwork to recover from my bans removal as it worked for the 1st year but I began having complications afterwards. So the doctor recommended that it be removed. I am now waiting to have bariatric surgery. I am kind of nervous about it, but know it is best for me. I am also seeking a buddy or mentor to provide their experience with the bariatric surgery as I am going through the process alone.

Hey congratulations on your decision to have the gastric bypass done!!! I had the ryn-y done because of the amount of weight I needed to lose. I believe I took off 2 weeks from work but I also worked from home at that time and my supervisor was really supportive and worked with me. I would say that 3-4 weeks would have gotten me completely healed up and able to go in office to work. As long as you don't have any complications (I had one) the healing process is pretty simple.

Oh thanks so much for the information!!! The acronyms you used for the type of gastric bypass, please provide with a brief description. I know that there is the gastric bypass and the sleve, but wasn't certain of which one you were referring to that you had. Again, thanks so mu h for your reply, as it was so helpful.

  7. Recently I have had a lapband port removal. I have been taking care of my wound by myself. Next year I will be having a gastric bypass surgery. Just need to talk with someone who has gone through the same process. Needing support. Would someone please be my mentor/buddy, as currently I do not have a support team?

  8. Move forward to doing what you think is best for YOUR body and your inner peace and , confidence level. So many people have gone through the same thing, went through with the surgery and BOOM the felt better about themselves, empowered, and their self esteem had gone to a higher level. This will also prove his real feelings about you, as he should be supportive of yoir decision and of your best interest. It could be that he is blocking your blessings for someone who has their best interest in you and is supportive of your wants and needs. His job is risky -- you don't know from day to day if you are going to get a knock on your door telling you that something happened to him in his lone of work. I am side that he likes his job and you support him in his decision to stay on that job. Its good that you are seeing this now because a relationship works both ways and it is not about what HE wants and needs itsbout what benefits you both. So do what it is that makes you happy and content with yourself.

  9. Hi everyone!

I had lap band November 2011. This worked well for a while. I lost about 80 pounds, until I had complication Nov 2014. I had problems with vomiting everything I would eat, so my previous surgeon ordered an upper GI and esophageal manometry. Both of those tests confirmed I had a prolapse. Long story short, my insurance company made me switch to a different surgeon. I had my band and port removed 8/10/15. My new surgeon said that my band had also slipped and was sitting sideways which was causing me to have the vomiting. He also did an intra-op EGD to look at my esophagus to see if there was any damage from 9 months of vomiting. He said it didn't look too bad,but I needed to continue my Zantac and Prilosec. He said he had to remove the adhesions(scar tissue) from the band. I am not going to lie, the port removal and scar tissue removal is painful! It was supposed to be an outpatient procedure and go home same day, but I ended up staying the night in the hospital due to pain control and I am really glad I did. IV Dilaudid was the only thing that was helping my pain. They eventually switched me to percocets and that seemed to help with the pain. I am attaching a picture of the port site. I am now 4 days post-op band and port removal and I am still taking percocets for pain, but it is improving. I will be revising to Gastric bypass in late October, early November based on my surgeon's recommendations and my history of GERD. My insurance company wouldn't allow me to have the revision done in 1 surgery, so it has to be done this way. I am interested in hearing from those who have had band to bypass and what their experiences were.

There were 3 total incisions. 2 small ones which don't bother me at all, and one large painful incision where port was. This larger incision is the mean monster. attachicon.gif 20150810_185417.jpg

Was the larger incision left open to drain? Did you have to stuff it daily with medicated Guard stringy type paper and cover with gauze daily or was your large incision stitched or stapled up?

  10. I have had a lapband removal just last week. My surgeon left the whole oped from where the lapband was removed. It is rather painful and I have to remove the old packing of the whole and insert new medicine packing and then patch it up every day. My follow visit from the surgery was a horrendous one as I had no idea that my doctor was going to remove the gauze and the packing from the hole in my stomach and then stick his finger deep in the hole. I screamed to the top of my lungs. The doctor leaves the hole for drainage purposes so that there is no drainage inside the stomach and the blood stream. It is taking a while for the hole to close up and I am getting very frustrated with the healing process. Has anyone had this experience? I havr read about the band removals and the after experiences but they all seem to be the same and totally different from my experience.

  11. @Pinkgirl1234. My removal was scheduled at 0730, so I had all day to recover, however I was having pain control issues. I had asked my surgeon before surgery if I didn't feel good if I could stay for observation overnight since I lived 4.5 hours away and he said no problem. I woke up in recovery and they had a hard time keeping my pain under control, so they asked me if I wanted to stay and of course my answer was yes. I am really glad I stayed, because it took them almost until the next day to get my pain under control. The surgeon again seen me the following day. As far as your Upper GI goes, isn't that a trip? I had reflux all the way up my thoracic inlet just from a sip of water!!! Crazy, so glad you are making the right choice!
