abcdefgheather got a reaction from Wayward Traveler in exercising after balloon placement
thanks everyone! i have free access to the gym at our hospital, so i plan to start off with some slow cardio tomorrow. it's been quite awhile since i have done any serious working out anyway. just the thought of working up to more aggressive cardio and weight lifting concerned me a little.. but i will just work my way up and see.
so glad to have found this community. like i said, i was the first for the dr i work with so this is new to all of us.

that's my concern.. i hope i have taught myself a new lifestyle of healthy eating and once the balloon is removed not go back to my old, bad habits.

Congrats and welcome! I had mine placed the day before you. I did some walking a few days ago and it seemed fine. I also walked yesterday briskly and was fine, didn't feel more uncomfortable than usual. I have to admit the thought of heavy cardio does not appeal to me just yet. I plan to pick it up a bit in two weeks! Good luck!!

I was able to start walking within a few days, and lightly exercising within a week to ten days. After about a month I could do just about anything. I usually don't feel it when I exercise, although I'm not a runner - I've heard that that can be uncomfortable. Best wishes!! :-)

Welcome and congrats!!! Happy to hear its been pretty easy for you so far. I was able to workout at about 3 weeks. And did not feel the balloon inside of me. Although I will say that some mornings, which is when I work out, I feel very gassy from the balloon and that can be uncomfortable when I work out (burping!) But it passes, haha, and I move on! Goo d luck and hope you continue to feel good!

abcdefgheather reacted to Wayward Traveler in Ballooners: what have you learned so far ?
That's interesting ... and a good question. I have not had the exact same lessons. I do eat for hunger, but I also want to eat for comfort. I have to force myself to think of food a fuel and make eating decisions based on what's the best fuel for my body. It's not as fun but making it clinical like that somehow makes it easier. Also, I have not thrown up since the first 48 hours, so I have not learned the latter lesson either.
But I have learned (as I suspected) that losing weight is work no matter how you do it. I am very cognizant of what I put into my mouth. If I ate mindlessly, I think it would be easy to gain weight, despite the balloon. So while the balloon definitely helps, it's just a tool - not a solution. And what does that mean post-balloon? That the work will continue. Six months does not fix a battle that has lasted decades ... it just helps to keep you hyper-focused for a few months while you (hopefully) develop better habits.
Granted, I assumed this would all be the case going into the procedure, but now that's been confirmed. I'm still glad I did it - it was exactly what I needed, and was the best option for me.
    Cheers! :-)

So far I have lost over 25 pounds, but I've only just begun.
@@Recycled - Please note that some people do get the balloon to only lose 36 pounds ... or maybe to only lose that much while they have the balloon (and to continue losing more after). This makes more sense when you consider the following:
    - the balloon is temporary (you only have it for six months)
    - the balloon is intended for people with lower BMIs than those who have more traditional WLSs
    - the balloon is much less invasive that WLS (i.e. it is an outpatient procedure that does not involve any cutting)
    - the balloon is a beginning, not an end (i.e. a tool and not a solution), so many strive to lose more after it's removed
When you consider those factors and the risk/reward spectrum in general, 36 pounds makes more sense, however I heard heard of a lot of people losing 50-77 pounds during their six month balloon periods.
    I hope that helps! :-)

Tough love here......YES you can stick with the program. You absolutely do not need food to survive the first 6 weeks post op.
You could live on Water alone.
This is where the head starts to take control of your body. Advancing your diet before you are supposed to can cause serious damage to your new tummy. It can create problems down the road.
I will also ask if you are getting a minimum of 64 oz. of liquid? If not, that can cause the feeling of being hungry but I assure you, you are not.
This is when you learn to manage head hunger......
Many of us were not even allowed puréed foods until week 4! I know my doctor required Clear liquids week 1, full liquids weeks 2 and 3 and then finally puréed. Soft food did not come for me until week 6 post op.
You came this far, don't mess up now.
