What I meant was I've seen bad reviews about Dr MCCarty. Such as abusing alcohol and drugs, just wondered if they were really true

I don't live local either , I live in Ohio. I've read some bad reviews on him which is making me second guess going to him , but I've read really good reviews too. When you talked to him did he give you any info such as how many surgeries he's preformed such as the mini sleeve?

He's been performing bariatric surgery since the late 90s. He's done thousands and thousands. He developed the Mini sleeve and he does them daily. I trust him implicitly. I read the 1 review about alcohol abuse that you mentioned. I don't really believe that. If it did happen it was written 5 years ago if I remember correctly. He's fit, energetic, charismatic and bright eyed. (He's also eye candy... Lol!) I don't believe that review at all.

When did you have the surgery? You didn't have to stay at the hospital did you?

I had surgery August 16th. I didn't live local so I stayed in a hotel. I was released from the surgery center around 4 the afternoon of surgery. Stayed in a hotel that night. Did my leak test the following morning and my boyfriend drove me home.

  3. I did have surgery with Dr McCarty and it was the best experience ever. Very little pain. Two tiny incisions I can see (would have been only one but they had to reposition so I have one extra that's less than a centimeter long. I took pain meds for 1 day post op and 2 nights. I went back to work in a week and a half but could have gone back sooner. I feel like my recovery was a non event. Dr McCarty is the nicest guy you could ever hope to work with. I'd do it again tomorrow. I'm down 86 pounds and still slowly losing despite some major life upheavals which would have way laid me in the past. I have my life back and am living a normal healthy life.

I'm August 16th too. You should join the Facebook group. It's super helpful. Search for BP August 2016
Is the BP August 2016 FB Page just for Bypass Surgery?

No. It's primarily sleevers. The BP stands for Bariatric Pal.

  6. That I can have a normal relationship with food someday?

Another thread mentioned regretting never having pizza again. I plan on taking this very seriously, but I also don't plan on giving up having certain foods for the rest of my life. I've lost hundreds of pounds in my life. My most successful and long lasting attempts have included my favorite foods in moderation, allowing for the calories. The stricter the diet the shorter it was. Yes, I know. I always eventually grew frustrated or bored or derailed and stopped and the weight always came back.

Am I being naive that I'll be able to have a couple of bites of gourmet pizza, a special Pasta dish (pear and Gorgonzola ravioli with lemon cream sauce) , a bite of chocolate torte on my birthday as long as I plan for the calories?

I'm not talking about immediately after surgery, I'm talking months and years down the road. I'm not talking about a daily indulgence or even weekly. But I don't want to think about a life without good food at least occasionaly.

  7. No regrets. I have lost over 100 pounds and no longer need any of my diabetes meds.

Ok - maybe one regret. I wish I could eat some Brooklyn pizza with fresh mozzarella. :)

Why can't you eat a small slice of pizza? I don't plan on indulging daily or even weekly but especially 100 pounds down the line I will plan for small indulgences and adjust my calories accordingly.

  8. Fmla I would think has nothing to do with leave- but short term disability u no sually does. I know for myself there were issues that on the one hand made sense to hold off but the truth is I needed to have my surgery as soon as possible. Is the bathroom remodel for cosmetic or functional reasons?

The bathroom remodel is for a new master bath. Our house has 1.5 baths right now and it's just the two of us so it's not a necessity.

  9. I was going to wait until January for my surgery. I have a very high deductible and out of pocket expense so getting the surgery now would cost about $7000 and I've got $2600 in a health savings account. I've got about 50 hours of paid leave left for the year. I've got plenty of available credit to finance the rest. My bathroom remodel can be postponed a few months.

If I wait til January I can go with a lower deductible plan and it would cost about $3600 out of pocket and I would have most of that in my health savings account by then. I get 160 hours of paid leave a year. From a money standpoint it makes sense to wait.

I was reading that for FMLA to go into effect I'd have to use all of my paid leave first. IF something were to go wrong and I had complications and needed to take extra time off then I'd end up being out of paid leave for the entire year in January or February. Leaving me screwed for the rest of the year if something non - surgery related happened. That would leave no time to just take a personal day or a long weekend or anything for nearly a full year. We wouldn't be able to take our yearly February trip to Puerto Rico. No time off for weddings or funerals or anything. For a year. Even if things didn't go wrong my boyfriend is still kind of low man on the totem pole at work and the only long vacation he can get is in February because prime seasons (spring break, summer, holidays, etc) are reserved by old timers with much more vacation time and seniority than him.

If I do it in the next couple of months I'd be 4 or 5 months out by February vacation.....

I don't know. I'm so torn. I'm ready to do this now. My surgeon's office says it could happen in a few weeks because my insurance doesn't require a long diet or anything, just a nutritionist and psych visit.
