  1. Hi. Congratulations!

I am 20 days out now and also struggled in my first week - not really with fluids but with Protein. The deal with fluids is to just sip incessantly. My doc had me using a 30ml medicine cup every 15 minutes. i'd do my 'shot' in like three sips then wait.... and do it again 15 minutes later. Eventually pouring shots all day got old and i just sip sip sipped from a regular cup. I also did a fair amount of lukewarm broths - like the broth from wonton Soup (not the wontons of course) I know they are loaded with sodium for some people - not a huge concern for me - my blood pressure is hella low.

Protein I was not so good with. The smell of it totally grossed me out during my first week so honestly I just focussed on staying hydrated and was a bad bad girl until I could get back to shakes on full liquids week 2. Now I cut them either with Decaf coffee or fairlife milk which helps me get them down. Though my nose sensitivity to the protein seems to be getting better.

I had really bad pain in the muscle under one of my incisions. My doctor basically told me that was the muscle they really 'beat up' putting the instruments in and removing the stomach. I wore a binder for a few nights to help rolling over in bed and pressed in on that spot when I was changing positions to support the muscle when moving from position to position.

I can not tell you when it is going to get better - it seems to be different for everyone. What I will say is that I babied it for two weeks - moving slow, running short errands and being miserable. Then I had to go back to work and was literally in tears wondering how I was going to survive. And you know what - it was the best thing for me because as soon as I started really moving I got better super quick. After three days at work I was 1000X better. So I'm not saying its a cure all but I'm sold on the idea that the more you move the faster you heal.

Good luck! Great things are coming your way!

  2. Hi! I was sleeved August 15! My dr said I could go to normal foods at 2 week- that was a mistake- everything hurt a lot so I am back to soft foods for a few more weeks. Having a hard time getting in enough Protein. Dr said get in whatever you could and I probably couldn't get 60 at this point- but everything I read online says 60 so I am trying . But to do that I would have to have two Protein shakes a day and I just can't do it. I hate them now. I can do one. I got some gene pro but it is kind of gross in drinks as well .

Ready for the energy to come back!

I can relate. Pre op I had no problem with the shakes but post op I was having a tough time. It's like I can smell the protein. And the flavorless powders are just gross to me.

But I have to agree with @@NewAdventure2016 I do pretty much the same thing - I mix a premier Protein shake with equal parts Decaf and it goes down fine. Sometimes I cut it with fairlife milk also which gives an extra protein boost.

If not for the shakes I'd not be anywhere close to my protein with the tiny amount of food I'm eating.

Good luck! Great things are coming!

  3. I know it's tough. I started my pre op liquid diet August 1 and was sleeved on the 22 and through this whole process I have sat at the table with my family during meals including 3 birthdays, my block party, and a dinner party I attended 3 days after getting out of the hospital.

I find its better for me to sit with them and participate in the family time than to be removed from them. It's not as hard as it seems.

I would give it a shot - bring what ever you are eating or drinking to the table and be part of the conversation.

I hope it works for you - it's tough sometimes but I feel like being disconnected might be worse

  4. I had exactly the same experience, and I know how hard it is to remain optimistic with that pain. After the first few days it subsided enough that it was only really bad when I was changing position.

I tried the binder and found it to be uncomfortable because it restricted my breathing but the support at night was the only way I was able to sleep comfortably so I did use if for a few nights. Otherwise I basically pressed into that incision with an open palm when I was switching positions and that helped.

It was bad, no joke. But I can't stress enough to keep moving. As odd as it sounds I went back to work (pre k teacher) at 15 days and I was literally in tears the night before because I didn't think I could do it with the pain - but apparently it was the best thing for me because it's 5 days later and by my third day at work I realized I am not in pain at all. Now at 19 days I feel normal!

So I don't know if it's the moving or what that helped speed along the recovery of that poor beat up muscle but I have to assume it was because it was the only thing that changed.

I was literally sitting on my couch going for short walks and running little errands when someone would drive me and now it's like nothing happened.

Keep your eye on the prize. I know it sucks but better things are right around the corner.

  5. I can totally relate. I literally came home from the hospital to my mother in law cooking for three straight days to "make me feel better". She is an 80 year old, size 2 Dynamo who just doesn't get it.

I've also, at less than 2 weeks out, had two birthday parties in my house - and have already gone out to dinner (I had like three spoonfuls of the broth from French onion soup). And I went to a dinner party 5 days after surgery at a friends house.

You know I never really thought about how much of my life revolved around food until I wrote that out.

Anyhow it hasn't been that bad- I find the aftermath harder to deal with - when the leftovers are here and the people are gone - but I just remind myself that it's in my head and I'm doing alright.

  6. Hi. I did the seminar 1/21, had my first visit with the surgeon 2/18 and had surgery on 8/22.

6 month diet requirement but my surgeon was willing to schedule my surgery pending approval to try to get me in before the end of summer. So my last weigh in was 8/9 then I called daily and begged for approval - approved on the 18th AFTER all the pre surgical testing and everything lol

  7. I was sleeved August 22. I know exactly what you mean about the anti nausea meds - I stopped vomiting but still felt sick.

For me, I stopped being nauseous when I stopped taking the pain medication. Though sore in the muscle under one incision I prefer that feeling over the nausea.

    Good luck and congratulations!

  8. Hi. I was sleeved August 22. I really never had any pain drinking - just took tiny sips and was fine. It could be that your throat is sore from the tube but if you are concerned ask your doctor.

First BM was like 4 days out

My nausea went away as soon as I stopped taking the pain medication.

In my experience zofran helped me not throw up when taken for another condition but I still felt mild nausea when I was on it.

Good luck to you and congratulations!

  9. I'm wondering... How did your first week post op go? I'm 3 days out and I'm struggling so much.

I hear and see so many different stories that i guess I'm just reaching for some hope right about now!

Keep the faith. My first couple of days sucked - I was nauseous and sore - but I wasn't miserable - keep your eye on the prize and move, even if you are moving slowly.

I stayed in the hospital 3 nights because of nausea and vomiting - once I went home I ditched the pain meds and the nausea went away. I'd rather deal with sore than nauseous so it's a trade off that works for me.

I'm 10 days out now and doing ok. Still some pain in the muscle under one incision but I feel like it's days are numbered.

Great things are ahead for us!

  10. There really isn't a lot you can do. I started looking into this because I was concerned about my oldest boy. He is 27 and has to be about 350. I asked him to go with me to the seminar and to consider doing it with me but he has a lot of anxiety about the idea of surgery and wants to give losing another shot the old fashioned way.

I'm devastated because I know what he sounds like when he sleeps and he seriously falls asleep constantly during the day. So so worried about his health.

I am really hoping that after watching me yo yo all these years and then seeing the positive change in my life post surgery he will give it more consideration.

BTW my surgery is tomorrow.... Whoooo!!!!!

While I agree with the other posters to not be the one to broach WLS with a kiddo, if your son snores loudly and falls asleep during the day then he very likely has sleep apnea and it can kill him. If you've heard him stop breathing while sleeping, then he almost certainly has it. I think it would be appropriate to prod him to get into a sleep study. Perhaps dealing with health issues will help him realize that he needs to take action one way or another.

Absolutely no doubt in my mind he has sleep apnea - and having had a close friend die of it trust me when I tell you I have asked him repeatedly to have a sleep study.

I'm at a stand still talking to him. It's remarkably frustrating.

  12. Hi. I'm an August 22 too! Don't stress - you are going to be fine. I always get a little nervous during the waiting/prep for surgery - for me that's the worst part - so I just tell the anesthesiologist and they make all the worries go away lol

Im pretty sure that once we are back on solid food there is pretty much always something for us to eat as long as we have our Protein. I did south beach for like three years and my feeling is that it is probably similar except with much smaller potions.

So when you plan your meals - or when you are out - just focus on Protein first and enjoy the conversation and time out with people!

We are going to be fine.... Good luck!

  13. I have to tell you - I was concerned just like you and it really is just not that bad.

I started on the 2nd for surgery on the 22 and I am almost never really physically hungry.

I am still making all my daughters meals and sitting with the family to eat and it's not bugging me too much....

When she is at camp and I'm home alone I do have a little battle with head hunger and I've been doing little things to help with that - read a book, call a friend, walk around the block, take a nap, take a shower - and when I'm really desperate I clean lol.

But for the most part what has helped me the most has been acknowledging that it's just head hunger and deciding to not give in to it.

  14. My program was super specific about which shakes we are allowed to use during our 2 week pre op diet - which was sad because I really like the Atkins shakes but they didn't make the cut :(

I like the premier Protein and I am sticking with them - they are palatable enough and on sale at costco this month. Bonus!

I actually mix them with cold Decaf coffee - which makes them just about perfect for me
