Getting ready to complete the journey

@jkppt How are you doing now?
  3. I just had my panniculectomy on June 5th...It was covered by insurance 100% but I had MANY skin issues from it and it hung very low. It also was just the flap removal...not much contouring. I am also not at goal yet, this is a interim surgery. I have lost 292 pounds so the extra skin I have is significant. I added it up and all the surgeries I want will be around $23,000. My surgeon thinks he will be able to get insurance to cover my thighs though which is the one I want the most and is also the most expensive surgery I need. He told me my thighs are the most significant he has seen. I'm worried though because I do not know what my insurance situation will be like next year since I have insurance through the affordable care act and I need to be at goal and a stable weight for 3 months before I have the thigh surgery. I am still 49 pounds away from my goal and do not think I will be able to reach goal in 2 months in order to have this surgery this year.

    Tell me your Gallbladder Story...

I had mine removed about 6 months after my sleeve surgery. 3 weeks after sleeve surgery I developed TERRIBLE nausea. So much so that I didn't eat or drink anything for over a month. They put a picc line in for me to infuse fluids and nutrients into my blood stream because I could not take anything by mouth due to the nausea. I was on over 5 anti nausea meds at the same time to make everyday life slightly more bearable. I could hardly eat or drink anything for 5 months. A few months later I had a gallstone attack. I could not breathe or move and the pain was unbearable. I also started vomiting. I went to the hospital and the pain passed a few hours later but they didn't see anything on the Catscan. My surgeon did an ultrasound and found stones in my gallbladder. They scheduled the gallbladder removal for a few weeks later since it did not look bad on the images. After they removed it they told me it was in really bad shape and infected. 2 days after having my gallbladder removed all of the nausea was gone. All those months of suffering and all that needed to be done was remove my gallbladder. I have had zero problems with diarrhea and lost weight much easier after it was out. Though that could be because of no longer having the added calories from the infused nutrition. I suggest getting it removed to avoid problems in the future.
  5. I started at a size 38 and now I'm a size 14/16 My BMI when I started was 77.5 and now it's 35.6! I was 540 when I started and now I'm 248! I am 5'10 I am 14 months out from surgery and so ecstatically happy with my sleeve!
  6. Congrats on getting a date! My birthday is the 19th so its a good time of year to have it! haha
  7. I am definitely! A lot of people who had seen me before or even just my before pictures tell me how pretty or gorgeous I am. This makes me wonder if I'm pretty or if I'm just pretty in COMPARISON to what I was. It is a hard thing to deal with!

Having trouble getting my daily protein

This is not true. Many people after surgery, whether it's fresh out or years down the line, can't get all their protein and calorie goals in just 3 meals. My 6 times a day usually consist of: 1. A Greek yogurt. 2. A hard boiled egg and some cheese. 3. 3 oz lean protein and some veggies (maybe a small salad or steamed veggies). 4. A cottage cheese. 5. 3 oz protein with veggies again. 6. Protein shake or piece of fruit. I am over a year out and can not eat only 3 meals because it hurts if I try. Also I find this helps curb hunger because as your stomach heals your hunger will come back.

Slow loss and loose skin question

Unfortunately, loose skin is not really something you can avoid. The amount you will have depends on your sex, age, genetics, how much you had to lose, and how long you were overweight.

Having trouble getting my daily protein

I agree that you can not wait until you are hungry to eat. You need to eat, drink, and take your vitamins on a schedule. When I was freshly out I made a spreadsheet with the times I needed to eat, drink, or take a vitamin. Being a fresh bariatric patient is a full time job which is one of the reasons they recommend you take 6-8 weeks off of work after surgery, so you can get used to the schedule. If you wait until you are hungry you will never get in what you need. some people are never hungry, especially soon out as the stomach is still healing and swollen. I had to schedule things from 7am-11pm in order to get everything in, but I also had medications I spread out because I took a lot of medications as well. While you should schedule out small meals throughout the day don't force yourself to finish the meal if you can not, that will just end with discomfort and possibly vomiting. Try to figure out a schedule and meal plan that works for you, everyone is different. I am about 14 months out now and I eat a small meal or snack about every 2-3 hours.

Seeking tips from those 1+ Years Post-Op

I am 14 months post op. I have not had any real regain (only water retention) and also fear it. I have started to eat some slider foods but am going back to focusing on protein and vegetables. I do not track my food all the time anymore. I mostly rely on my knowledge of healthy choices. A diet mentality has never been good for me because then I feel I am being deprived and am more likely to binge. I also have much less restriction than I used to but I do still have restriction. I notice it more when I am eating meat over seafood or carbs. I can look at a plate and know how much of a portion I should be eating. This far out we rely less on our restriction and more on the knowledge we have gained about proper nutrition. I have lost a total of 291 pounds and still have 49 to go until I reach my first goal. I know this can be hard but we can do it. Just get back to basics and increase your activity and it will come off again. Good luck to you!

    Spaghetti Squash

I love it! I make it a lot and it is super easy! I usually serve it with some spicy tomato sauce with turkey Italian sausage and onions and peppers! YUM! I do so much with it though! I mix and egg and cheese with it and line a pie pan with it to make it a crust for a quiche. It's very versatile! As long as you season it, it's delicious!

    I'm Cold?!

I am freezing and NO ONE can believe it. My one friend jokes that when I come visit he is going to set the temperature I set it too and made fun of them for not being able to handle it. I walk around the house in many layers, a sweatshirt, and slippers. It's crazy!
