    Post Operation Pain

Well, I felt like I got hit by a truck for the first 2 days! And achey like I was coming down with the flu. But by the end of the first week I felt 90% normal. 6 weeks sounds like a long time to not feel well....what does your surgeon say? Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App

    Day one!

Holy crow!!! You get roast beef and salad on post-op Day One??? You must think us Americans are nuts putting up with these liquid diets for 2 weeks post-op! The food went down well? And stayed there? Which surgery did you have? Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App
  3. I will be watching here to see what you learn tomorrow. This is such an awful experience for you, I am so sorry. Have you thought about getting another surgeon to look at you? Is there a major Bariatric center in your geographical area? Like Mayo, Cleveland Clinic, Duke? I believe Duke "fixes" problematic surgeries for many people in the mid-Atlantic and Southeast states. I bet other big centers would, too? Maybe look for ones that have major Bariatric Fellowships (usually linked to a university). Thinking of you, hoping you get relief soon. 4. You can buy 4-packs of a single flavor at Walmart and many grocery stores (i.e.: Harris Teeter in the south). Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App
  5. So...it kinda doesn't matter whether you "want" to drink Water or Protein. Its not about what you want to do at this point. It's your medicine, you have to do it. If you were taking care of a small child who didn't want to take their medicine for days, I am pretty sure you would find a way to make it happen. Sounds like you did not experiment with unflavored protein yet. Try GENEPRO, you can get it on Amazon. A very small scoop has 30g of protein, you can mix it right into that apple juice you're drinking, you won't even taste it. I have tried a lot of Proteins, and the Genepro amazes me on how easily it mixes into tea, cold drinks, pudding, anything at all. Sent from my iPad using the BariatricPal App

    Post op in the hospital

I'll try to remember your questions: unjury Protein powders taste like milkshakes to me. Unjury.com Catheter is usually placed once you're under anesthesia; mine was removed before I left the OR when I was still under anesthesia, so no pain. I was on pills for pain meds within 12 hours post op (oxycodone), but there was something else I vaguely remember them using in my IV (narcotic). Oh but I also remember them giving me this super Tylenol in my IV that worked really really well, and Tylenol usually does nothing for me. My surgeon does a leak test in the OR with dyes and Water and something else. They fix leaks before they close us up, hence no SWALLOW/leak test the next day (thank god). My surgery was 9:30am on a Thursday and I went home 3:30pm on Friday. I had RNY. Wear the gown, so much easier with the IVs, and in case you bleed. Bring clean underwear, feminine supplies if you're a woman (stress from surgery and blood thinners can bring on your period suddenly), deodorant, toothbrush, toothpaste, lip balm, gas x strips, phone and phone charger. Good luck! When's the big day? Sent from my iPad using the BariatricPal App

    Starving!

No, I honestly don't think so. But all that matters is what your doctor says. Sent from my iPad using the BariatricPal App
  10. If you don't even know if you are getting in your fluids and Protein, does that mean you are not keeping track? Like on paper or an app? We can't guesstimate what we're doing in the early stages, the stakes are way too high. You didn't work do hard to get through pre-op and surgery to let things slip now bc you weren't tracking the ONLY things we're supposed to be tracking: liquid, protein, exercise. And I fear that crunchy sunflower seeds are far far down the line. 12. Had a 7 week wait til first avail surgeon appt at the program I wanted. First surgeon appt July 14, RNY on August 18. My insurance only required BMI over 40 and psych eval, but my surgeon/program had me extremely busy for a month with many many tests, psych eval, barium swallow, endoscopy, nutrition and pre-op classes. It was a part-time job for a month, honestly! But they were working to get me in BC if I couldn't be healed and back at work by Sept 15, I would need to wait til April. And I asked them to pls see if we could make it work. And it all worked out. Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App

    Is this normal!?

Yes, I had my RNY on August 18th, and my stomach was gurgling like crazy for the first full week, just started slowing down on Day 8 post-op. I decided it was my stomach yelling "What the f*** is going on here???!!!!" Sent from my iPad using the BariatricPal App

    water & proteins

I am so sorry you are having a hard time. I am newly post op so I get how hard it is to get it all in. You say you are not thirsty or hungry and I believe you completely.....but, it doesn't matter if you're thirsty or hungry, you hAve to get something in. My surgeon said the first month is like the first month with a newborn, except with WLS the newborn is your new tiny stomach. It doesn't know what it needs or wants, and it can't get what it wants without you. This is one of those times where, you just have to start doing it, whatever you truly can, not what your non-existent thirst and hunger are telling you. Could you start with just half an ounce, or a tablespoon of any clear liquid, every 15 min? You can even take 3 tiny sips to get that tablespoon in if you need to, you don't have to gulp. Or how about you let one sugar free Popsicle melt in your mouth every hour? Please try something new, don't give up, or you're going to wind up in the hospital very soon. You're feeling dizzy bc you are already dehydrated, don't let this progress, please. Sent from my iPad using the BariatricPal App

    Completely Undecided.

Hey there! I also had Dr. Yoo, and he was terrific. I also thought that their new fellows are pretty terrific too. I worked several times w Dr. Alvarez (a fellow) and he was great with a perfect bedside manner. I can't say enough good things about the program, and my care at the hospital from check in to being wheelchair-ed out. Do you have a pre-op and surgery date yet? I will be at the next Support Group Meeting in September, decided to pass on tonight bc I'm only 5 days post-op. I am really, really pleased with my decision to have the bypass, and Dr. Yoo definitely helped me get there. Sent from my iPad using the BariatricPal App
  21. Had my RNY yesterday, everything went super smoothly, only real issue I have is the gas. Man, this gas is not a minor thing, I have a whole new appreciation for anyone suffering from gas chronically (and little babies with gas, it can REALLY hurt!) Trying to stay ahead of the pain too.?Too tired to write more, will touchback later. Thanks for your guidance and support these past few pre-op months.? Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App
  22. Surgery Thursday, I have only Clear liquids tomorrow. Do the Syntrax nectar Protein drinks count as clear liquid?? Crystal Light counts as clear liquid for my surgeon, even though you can't completely see through it. Syntrax Nectar you can't see through as well, and it has protein as well.....does the protein negate this from being a clear liquid? I will call NUT in morning, but I'll be up thinking about this all night. Sent from my iPad using the BariatricPal App
  23. My RNY is this Thursday (HOW is it even possible that it is almost here???!!!), and my brain is fried. I can't think straight. I start one task then stop halfway through and do something else. I walk upstairs to get something then forget why I am there. I'll have a conversation with someone and nod politely, but inside my head I am not listening to a word they are saying, just thinking "A week from right now I will be 2 days post-op!" I have no second thoughts, I am excited to get to the other side, but ..... I am just amazed it's really happening. I have so much to get done, I only really have 2 days to prep BC I am going on a short trip to move my daughter into college right before surgery (literally the day before, but I won't be doing any lifting at all since I'll be on Clear liquids that day...there for moral support only). So much to do and I can't even get my mind calmed down enough to write a list. Normal? Please say it is? Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App
  24. Hi all, I recently came across the Weight Loss Surgery Podcast on iTunes, and I have found really interesting and informative. It's done by a bariatric coordinator and nurse in Oregon, and she has over 70 podcasts up so far....most are over an hour long. She interviews doctors, researchers, bariatric bloggers, psychologists, exercise experts, and patients with a compelling story. If you are an information junkie like me, or info you can listen to on the go, check it out. I'll give you a link to this particular episode, which covered the topic of weight set point, the biology of weight, and why bariatric surgery works differently than any other solution. Hope you like it, there's tons to listen to in her archives: https://itunes.apple.com/us/podcast/weight-loss-surgery-podcast/id662443588?mt=2&i=369703494 Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App
