  1. One of the requirements I had to meet in order to be released from the hospital was to be able to drink a whole shake in an hour. I was expected to, and able to, do that the day after surgery.

Ele I think when you say "I can't" you might actually mean "I'm afraid to". I think everyone worries initially about stretching their pouch, including me, but know this: It is highly unlikely that you will stretch your sleeve or pouch. HIGHLY unlikely. Our bari team addressed this issue in support group and they all said that it would take an incredible amount of consistent abuse to achieve such a feat (even harder for sleevers I think). If you want to stretch things out, you MIGHT be able to IF you work hard at it, but that will involve effort, pain, a lot of time, and significant over eating. :) My point is, you aren't going to stretch your pouch. My advice, for what it's worth, is to let go of the fear (seriously, drop it. It's counterproductive), relax, and just follow the plan outlined for you. You'll do great :)

I think I'm still stuck on... you got a whole shake down in an hour before you left the hospital!!? You rock! Lol

I thought I would be bursting w energy! I have a friend whose like a year post op, and she said she was tired for a month! I go see my Dr in 2 weeks, but geez is this normal?

Yes, this is perfectly normal. You just had major surgery. There is nothing wrong with testing.

Just focus on your Protein and fluids, and keep taking your Vitamins as instructed. It gets better.

    Ok thanks!

  3. Lol I can't drink 1 shake in a day. And reread my post I just said I have no room for Soup. I have been trying to get this shake down all day and I have half left and I am not going to be successful because now I am full. I am done eating for today. If I try to take in more I will puke. So I am following your advice and am now on a shake only diet.

  4. I have felt very tired since surgery and i am 12 weeks post op. For me it is less each day but When I feel very drained i try to knap especially on weekends. During the work week I go to bed early to avoid feeling too tired. My blood work indicated my Iron is low and I am taking additional supplements to increase it. Our bodies are adjusting to all the changes and for some of us it takes a bit longer to feel 100% back to normal. This wont be forever.

Yes! I know our latter will be greater! ???? and what I am realizing along the way, is that this is a real life changing journey! It's pretty amazing! So yes thank you for the advice as we adjust to our new lifestyles!!! #salute

  5. @@scampbell33 I'm 17 days out and also started feeling very tired about day 12. Checked my BP and it was suddenly about 30 points lower. My doc took me off my meds two days later when it dropped further, and now I'm beginning to get some energy back. So it would be a good idea to check your BP and talk to your doctor.

Yes I will be calling my family dr in the morning. ... ty!

  7. I'm 6 weeks post op and have lost 19.5 pounds (was on the lower end at the start-221.8). I can usually manage to reach my Protein goal daily and get in exercise and whatnot, but I don't feel all this energy people talk about. I am looking forward to that feeling!! Why do you think that is? Is anyone else going thru this?

I literally just posted the same thing!! I'm pooped and it's only 2:30 in the afternoon where I live! Lol

  9. It is important to realise not everyones team has the same goals. My surgeon focuses on balance nutrition, Protein, veg, fruit snd grains NOT high Protein. While i do aim for reasonable pritein in my diet it is not my sole focus like many here

Sent from my SM-T350 using Tapatalk

I hope every surgeon has the goal of making sure you heal and don't have any complications post-op.

A balanced diet is a great goal down the road, but right after surgery protein and fluids are critical --- even if it is hard, or you don't have an appetite, or don't like the taste, etc.

One 11 oz protein shake spread out over three days and less than 8 oz of Fluid a day is not enough for anyone post-op. I can't imagine any surgeon advocating that diet as a good strategy for anyone.

    SMH

But if I dare to try to drink 2 shakes, and enough protien to reach 70 or 80g I feel sick like I wana puke! I just can't do it... not right now at least.

  10. I have been reading with alarm several posts from people lately who have recently had surgery and don't seem to have gotten the message about how important Protein is to their healing and their weight loss.

It is as if a whole group have completely skipped any nutrition education and think that it is ok to starve themselves.

Protein is critical (a minimum of 80-100 grams, depending on your surgeon's recommendation for your specific needs)

Fluid is critical (at least 64 oz.).

You do not get bonus points for not reaching those goals. In fact, it will slow your weight loss and healing.

(Climbing down off of my soap box for now.)

I agree/disagree. I am three years out and I still can't always meet my protein/water requirements. I couldn't even come close for the first year + and my surgeon only advised 64-80gr of protein. :)

I did the best I could, healed like a champ and reached goal with a 110+ pound weight loss in 9 months.

I do agree that you should do protein first and that protein is key in healing and loss, but I am not sure that you have to reach such high numbers to succeed/heal.

    :D

Whew, thank u for this, I was beginning to get nervous! Lol... I'm like 11 days post op and I'm nowhere near 80g of protein daily... I mean I try, and all my choices seem to be protien! But still can't reach that goal! Lol.... so, I'm headed in the right direction!

  11. This may sound too obvious, but don't think about it! If I think about pizza, pork sausage, a thick burger, etc, I will be craving them every time, but I mentally "change the channel" any time those thoughts come into my head.

Yea I just had a craving for salsa? Its not something I would normally "sit and think about" (i dont do that btw) Like pizza or a burger... lol (I know better) just a little salsa... however I haven't tried it yet, so we'll see how it goes?

  12. If you're on full liquids, you could put a bit of cooked salsa(not raw, or crudo, pido de gallo, that kind of thing) in the blender and pour it over greek yogurt. You may need to thin the salsa, depending.

Whoops, just saw your reply. I think you could try a little cooked salsa on your eggs. That would be yummy! wait after that first bite to see how your sleeve likes it.

Yesss! Yummy! Perfect... I'll try that! Thanks!

  13. I'm having a horrible craving for salsa and sour cream! What do I do? Eat Tomato Soup and call it a day? I'm only 11 days post op, and I can only tolerate a few bites of anything, but is salsa a bad idea?

Sent from my SAMSUNG-SM-G900A using the BariatricPal App

What phase are you on? At 7 days I was on full liquids. I didn't have salsa until I was on soft foods.

Maybe try some V8 in the meantime.

My Dr told me after my visit the other day that I can move to the soft diet if I could tolerate it... so far so good... however all I've had is scrambled eggs, and tuna... I've done well w both. But I was just kinda scared of salsa? Lol... maybe I will just drink a little v8 and maybe the craving will subside. ... thanks!

  14. The appointment with the doctor's office yesterday was phenomenal in some ways. This might get long, and I hope it's not too confusing!

Backing up: It was about a week ago when someone at BCBS first called my coordinator saying I wasn't covered for VSG. I was sure it was some error or someone reading the wrong file or something. Right away, I suggested to my staff that IF that is true (and I didn't believe it then), we could have me do the hernia repair and then just add-on the surgeon fee for the VSG and do all at once. Makes total sense, and I can see you all understand this concept here! So, I called BCBS myself to get it straightened out and they were still telling me it's all fine, medically necessary, you're covered, etc (that person didn't look deeper into the employer benefits exclusion at that time, and I wasn't aware of it). Even though I thought we were now good to go and the coordinator believed it too, since that time my surgeon was alerted to all of this by the staff, and started looking into the ability to do this "VSG-piggyback-on-the-Hernia" plan for me.

Fast forward to yesterday: I started my appointment with the coordinator and shared all the details about how I'd just learned that I'm now definitely NOT covered for VSG due to employer's exclusion buried deep within their policy somewhere. She explained that Doc has been working on the contingency plan all week long with the hospital. Next, went into examination room for weigh, go over meds, all that stuff with nurse. Next, the doctor and most of his staff met me in the hall and then led me into his office to talk, just the two of us. He explained that at our hospital, this piggyback-VSG had never been done, though he'd tried many times before and the hospital bigwigs would not budge. In my case, he was somehow able to get through to the top brass there to get it accepted as a new procedure. This may in part be because I've been through this long process for months, met every requirement, medical necessity with several co-morbidities, and we were now just DAYS away from my scheduled surgery date. I think that the urgency helped.

During our meeting in his office, my PA interrupted to say so-and-so was on the phone, did he want to take it now or call later? He kind of darted out of the office and left me there for at least 15 minutes (I figured it was some emergency). When he came back, he said that was actually about my case; they were literally still getting finance dept people at the hospital on board with the piggyback-VSG while I was there!

Because I'm their guinea pig for this, they couldn't give me a $ figure so I couldn't even comprehend if I could afford what they were trying to do. Finally, they got a figure for the VSG portion. In order to get this squared away immediately so that I could know that I'm actually getting surgery on Monday, I paid 50% of that figure with a credit card right there. If I had time, I might have looked into the Care Credit financing or something...but no time.

My entire staff was so kind and so wonderfully human about this whole thing. I felt like they genuinely cared about me, they realize how hard I've worked and how much I want and need this. We were all celebrating after we got the breakthrough with the hospital that will now allow a self-pay VSG tied together with covered hernia repair, for the first time ever. My Doc said that my case will enable more patients who really need this to be able to get it done at our hospital in the future. I actually feel really proud and excited about this.

Yay!! I knew something great would happen for you! Congrats! And now because of you, many others will be able to get the help that they need too!! This is wonderful!

  15. So, today I had my two week post op appointment at the surgery center where I started my journey.

    I left quite excited.

We'll just start off with the stats and then will come the feels.

    Sw: 281

    Preop: 264

    Surgery day: 252

    Today: 241

I went in a little apprehensive about how I was doing so far. To my discredit, I started on soft foods a little early, at day 10 instead of day 12, just because strained Soup was really going to be the ******* death of me. So there I am in the waiting room, trying to be cool, looking down at my stomach like man, I really could have gone without that cottage cheese yesterday. I was sweating over what the scale might say; that it was going to out my head start into phase ll foods and that obviously I was failing.

I've been worried and wrong before, and today was no exception.

When I walked into the room, the MA weighed me in and ta da! I was 241.2 lbs. That is 10.8 lbs lighter since surgery two weeks ago. I'll take it! The doctor then came in and proceeded to tell me that since I first visited (weighing in at a whopping 281 lbs) I lost 40 lbs. 40 ******* pounds. Uhm, can I just say go me? Because gooooo me! I was thrilled. On top of 40 lbs lost, as for the percentage of my excess weight needed lost to reach a healthy BMI given my height of 5'7, I lost 28% of my excess. I went from needing to lose 141 lbs to only needing to lose 101 lbs.

Now don't get me wrong, 100 lbs is still a lot. But it's less than what I started at. Today, I am half way to reaching my first goal of 200 lbs. I really hope to make that goal within the first few months post op. Ideally by my next check up, scheduled at the end of February. That seems like a pipe dream to me still, but if I can remain dedicated and smart about using my VSG tool, I know I can do it.

Here's a little thing that's bugging me though. I can't see the loss of 40 lbs yet. I recognize my clothes are getting a little baggier, and right at this very moment, I'm wearing a pair of jeans I bought last year to have them just now fit comfortably, but I still see the almost 300 lb girl looking back at me in the mirror everyday. Being a woman lustful for instant gratitude, and high impatience, it upsets me. I know it's gone. 40 lbs is gone. But from where? I think it's just that I'm used to seeing myself everyday (and because Im kindaaa a narcissist, all day.) My mom makes the comment, look how skinny you are! And I see her about every two or three days. So, It's just me. Even the doctor said she barely recognized me and that I've done "marvelous" so far. The fat girl in me just assumed she was stroking my ego.

Still. I feel good. And I'm ready to keep losing more more moreeeee!

    2n69hn8.jpg

Yes! So I'm 9 days post op and my Dr said I too can do soft solids, and I was afraid to do it? I really want too tho, but is too soon? But I did try a lil tuna today... it went well... but like I really want scrambled eggs. ... do u think its ok? Or should I still be doing liquid?
